Christmas Social - Red Lion, Betchworth, December 2024]
::
The SVVS Christmas Social has been held
for the past few years chez Messers President at their home but it
was decided to go for a bigger space outside. The Red Lion of
Betchworth is one of many water holes of out Publicity Officer so
we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately the process of getting
the names in, and providing right numbers to the pub hiccupped and
twice as many came (72) as was catered for. Pub coped brilliantly
in additional food, if a bit tight on seating and parking.

SVVS LBVCR Lunchtime Meeting, Black Horse - Hookwood
2024]
::
Some SVVS Members who have been spectating on the London to
Brighton Veteran Car Run traditionally meet up later at the Black
Horse in Hookwood for a noggin and natter. Only three of our
Members partook in the Run proper with their veterans; see report.
This year the weather on the Run was dull but dry and warmish. Low
numbers on roadside spectators. The meeting at the post-run
venue at the Black Horse had 11 'proper' cars in attendance, and
gave us one new member.

SVVS Lunchtime Meeting, Red Barn Inn, Lingfield - October 2024 :: [
The Red Barn at Blindley Heath in October has been for a long time
our last outside mid-month venue of the year and signals that
Christmas and New Year are not far away. This year at this
ultimate meeting we had a surprisingly low turnout of 20 cars
mostly of the 'classic' genre, also two interesting motorcycles at
differing ends of the age spectrum, and Chas with a fascinating
bicycle with a frame likely to be at the very higher end of the
pain spectrum. Altogether we were down 14+ cars on last year.

SVVS Display at the Reigate Tunnel - September 2024]
::
The SVVS again displayed our vintage
and classic vehicles in the Reigate Old Tunnel Road which used to
be the main road to London. We were supporting the National Heritage Open Day
Scheme but it seems Reigate is no longer
putting so much effort into the event. In the old days
the town had local stands selling food and things, loads of bunting,
and
music from local bands playing in the street. This time the Caves
being open meant we did not have whole of the Tunnel to ourselves.
We had
a turnout of 18 cars and two bikes which is similar to last
year. |

SVVS Lunchtime Meeting, The Star - Lingfield - September
2024]
::
After many weeks of near drought in
the latter part of the summer, the weather chose our two svvs
hours on the Sunday lunchtime to break and deposit significant
bits of the Atlantic over Lingfield. The Star in Lingfield in any
case signals that the 'summer season' is drawing to a close, which
is a bit of a shame. The weather for most of the Summer this year
was great; pity it ended with a splash. The
turnout of cars was predictably low, only 13, but up two on last
year; - with only three being 'vintage'. |

:: [ SVVS
Evening Meeting, Fox Revived, Norwood Hill - August 2024 ] ::
The Fox Revived is a thriving busy pub and highly popular eatery
so that the standard tarmacked car park is generally entirely
packed with no spare spaces for us. Fortunately, they also have an
overflow paddock which we take over. This has been a good year
weather-wise, with most events on lovely dry days with no rain.
When it rains it can be quite a problem in getting out. The
vehicle turnout is now tending to the 'classic' age group. We had a
good turnout of 40 vehicles, up four on last year. |

[ SVVS at Edenbridge & Oxted Show - Ardenrun - August
2024] ::
Edenbidge and Oxted Show takes
place at the Ardenrun Showground, just off the A22 at Blindley
Heath, over two days of the August Bank Holiday. It is generally
attended by some 40,000 people over the Sunday and Monday, and
is primarily a Country Show dedicated to country pursuits. SVVS
has been associated with the show since the move to Arderun and
has provided many of the of 48 cars on the Sunday and 49 cars
and one motorcycle on Monday, mostly 'classics'.

::
[ SVVS Summer Picnic - Lowfield Heath Windmill - August
2024] ::
The Great SVVS Summer Picnic was
held this year at the Lowfield Heath Windmill in a very
pretty little hideaway at the end of the Gatwick main runway in
Charwood, but the wine and hotdogs were absent. Last year it was held at Church Farm Chez
the Mohaceks with 110 people in 54 vehicles, up by 39 cars on the previous year
at Lakeside. Today on a fabulous hottest day of a continuing
heatwave we had 43 cars of interest, three were veterans, two motorcycles
and some moderns.

:: [ SVVS
at the Jollies at the Jolliffes - Horne - August 2024 ] ::
Ross Savage is a SVVS Member and is also
a Military Vehicle enthusiast who has a number of specialist
vehicles, and a lovely field in Horne and decided that a lovely
evening in midst of the heat-wave in August, would be a nice time
to invite a few old car friends over to share the field with Jeeps and Land-Rovers present in military uniform
including Ross' rather unusual Belgian built Minerva Land-Rover.
Also present in farming country were number of tractors just done
smelly muck raking.

Evening Meet - Bletchingley Arms, Bletchingley - July
2024] ::
The Plough re-branded Bletchingley
Arms is on the A25 with lots of passing traffic and when the
weather is fine it often draws our best attendance of the year.
Olympics in Paris in full swing in the rain. Weather here was kind
to us, temperature 30C and blue mottled skies which made
photography a pain requiring much darkroom rework. New 6pm start
time eased parking problems. Two years ago we had some 43 vehicles
here, last rainy year only16, and today the count was up to 46. |

Visit to the Newdigate Village Day - July 2024] ::
The invitation show was held on the
Brocus, a large playing field in the village that was used for
cattle grazing in days gone by and now, most interestingly owned
by all the Newdigate villagers. A number of shows have been held
here where the locals are gathering urgently needed funds
for replacement of the ancient oak shingles on the church spire.
Fun Day Car Display goes a long way to help the important
project. The SVVS was one of a number of clubs invited, and
have been here before. |

[ SVVS
at Leigh Country Fayre Flower Show, Leigh - July
2024] ::
Regular annual 'visiting' meeting for
the SVVS by kind invitation of the organisers. The Surrey Vintage
Vehicle Society displayed a good varied selection of interesting
vehicles. There was also a splendid display of vintage and classic
motorcycles by other clubs andmemeber Graham Capel even had a
stripped Auster aircraft on a trailer. We were blessed with glorious
weather, continuing heatwave, sun shone, straw hats and sunglasses were
order of the day and much ice cream was consumed. |

::
[ SVVS Lunchtime Meet - Dog & Duck, Outwood - July 2024 ] ::
The Dog & Duck used to be our
headquarters for the Winter Evening Meetings but the Covid Epidemic
created a new type of drinking culture of small groups at which
the Dog & Duck was very successful, - and we had to move on. This
remains a
Sunday Lunchtime outside venue where this year we had a good
turnout of some 26 cars, mostly regulars but we also had
some not often seen cars; like the the yellow/brown Morris 8 and
the white Junior Presidential Sprite. Very lovely day was had by all !

SVVS
Evening Meeting - Six Bells, Horley - June
2024] ::
The Six Bells at Horley has been on
our calendar for ages and comes with some notable history relative
to our visits here. One year no beer as had no glasses. Another we
found them closed due to a murder hunt, so we got beer from Tesco
and served from back of a Rolls Royce. Yet another year no beer,
largely because the kitchen had caught alight and and the pub had
burnt down. Last year we were not allowed to take beer to
the car park. This year no dramatics and had 44 vehicles, up
3 on last year. |

[ SVVS
Summer Saunter to Penshurst Place, Kent - June
2024] ::
Once a year the Surrey Vintage
Vehicle Society has a Summer Saunter which involves a drive to a
point of interest where we then have lunch and while away the
afternoon. The run was from a morning-cuppa-spot where route pointers
are handed out suggesting various detailed ways of ending at the
selected finishing spot. This time it was Penshurst Place in Kent,
a castley ex-Hunting Lodge of Henry VIII. Glorious hot sunshine resulted in a nice show of
22 mostly classic cars, and five being Vintage. |

SVVS
Lunchtime Meet - Surrey Oaks, Newdigate - June
2024 ] ::
The Surrey Oaks in Newdigate is a
timeless English country pub with low beams in the old bit, and a restaurant in newish bit.
It is usually one of the better attended of our venues because it
is famed for its selection of real ales and good food. The
weather was perfect and normally we are joined by the local
Hot-Rod brigade, but this yearm only one. Final analysis, we had
30 vehicles and couple moderns at the venue, which was
surprisingly 14 down on last year. Four vehicles not seen
before. |
|
::
[ SVVS Evening Meet - Skimmington Castle, Reigate - May 2024 ] ::
Skimmington Castle is a Public House
just off Reigate Heath with very good beer and food, and is
normally crammed. We have bought forward our event starting time
for summer evening meetings to benefit from any sunshine and to
allow return home during 'daylight'. Evening was lovely and warm,
pub not busy so plenty space. Lots of comings and goings but grand
count=up suggests we had a total of some 56 proper vehicles
present plus some moderns; three of the cars not seen before, |

SVVS
Lunchtime Meet - The Bull Inn, Chelsham - May
2024] ::
Third visit to this venue which was at the suggestion of our Editor Malcolm Ward who arrived
early, and acted as a very efficient steward. In view that the
common was soggy from previous inclement weather it was not
possible to dispay our vehicles on the Common so it was a squeeze
to get our cars as well as the general public into the pub's
relatively small car-park adjacent the Common. In view of such
lovely weather we had a better turnout than last year's 11 with this
year's 14. |

Treasure Hunt & Black Horse, Hook wood - April
2024 ] ::
The 2024 Treasure Hunt combines the regular April pub meet at the Black Horse in
Hookwood, with the SVVS Treasure Hunt. The
Treasure Hunt was organised by last winner Gavin Tester and started at
Priory Farm where 10 cars gathered for coffee, and then tour of
four villages. The Hunt is case of driving
to a specified location, parking, and walking to find answers
to clues defined by questionnaire. The SVVS
Winner was Matt Tester, so stays in family. Five more cars waiting
at Hookwood |

Dinner - Reigate Manor Hotel, Reigate - April
2024 ] ::
Reigate Manor Hotel was again the
venue for the Annual SVVS Dinner and was superbly officiated over
by our Chairman Malcolm Bailey and his wife Sheena. The event was held in the slightly smaller 'Garden Room' which
has a slightly more intimate feel than the main ballroom we have for larger number of our Members. The Dinner was
attended by about 65 which was similar to last year but showed that Members were
still keen on annual get-together. Speaker was Ken Bare of
Surrey Hills. |

:: [
SVVS Lunchtime Meeting, Kingswood Arms - March 2024 ] ::
New venue for the SVVS. It is not in ULEZ but how to get there?
The M25 is closed for weekend in both directions due to building a
new bridge at junction 11, or suchlike. Day has dawned as gloomy
as it comes, with promises of buckets. Buckets duly arrive just
before lunch. Pub spillover car park is up a hill out of sight,
parking sideways on the hill. Ankles hurt after a bit. We
had a turnout of some 13 cars and one motorcycle. Those cars that
weren't Rovers were dry quite modern or very moderns.

:: [
SVVS Lunchtime Meeting, Red Barn Inn, Lingfield - February 2024 ] ::
Change of venue as Cock at Headley was becoming a
little problematic. The Red Barn at Blindley Heath is a very
popular eatery with a lovely smart barn restaurant and has a nice
big roomy car park. The pub can sometimes be quite packed and
getting a table to have lunch can be quite difficult. The weather
here can be quite unpredictable. so a great surprise that
lunchtime arrived sunny and warm. We had 25 interesting
vehicles here (16 at The Cock) and two
cycles, one was 'Penny-farthing'.

:: [ New Year's Day Lunchtime -
Beehive, Woodhatch -
January 2024 ] ::
New Year's Day 2024 blossomed dull, damp and grey, there were
forecasts of storm Henk but no actual rain. Just before lunchtime
it even looked as if it may not rain during our meeting so Mr
President decided to use the XJS V12 Pozermobile. The Beehive was already packed to triple-parking
with
SVVS cars. The final number from Chas Moody advised a very respectful
SVVS turnout of
some 32 cars and one bicycle, - so slightly up on the 29 number of last
year; some interesting visitors.
