This visit was the first
visit to this venue and was inserted into the SVVS calendar in lieu of the
Summer Saunter which had occurred earlier in the year at Hever
Castle. The visit was at the suggestion of our Editor Malcolm Ward
who arrived early, put up signposts and acted as a very efficient
visibility-jacketed parking steward. The pub is located on Chelsham Common
and the pub had organised for us to use the council-owned heath to display
our cars on. The day was absolutely glorious and was one of the hottest of
the year and was the beginning of the then current heat-wave. It did come
as quite a surprise that the grass on the common was already completely dried
out and yellow. Fortunately the heath is surrounded by big trees and
Malcolm had arranged for the cars to be parked under the trees in the much
welcome shade. We had a quite reasonable turnout for a new venue which is
actually quite out of the way and it was noticeable that some normal
'regulars' were absent. In the final analysis we had 22 vehicles some of
which will hopefully become members.
