The
SVVS Summer Picnic was held again this year at the Lakeside View Pub in
Beare Green adjacent to Henfold Lakes. The arrangements were again made by
our Publicity Officer Tony Russell whose one of the local haunts this is.
The organising logistics again precluded the supply of the usual free
glass of plonk and hot dog that have been accompanying this event in the
past. The pub is next to a lake used for fishing but fishing was 'off'
this year because the water level was too low due to the continuing heat-wave
and drought. The field where we had met previously, use now reorganised,
was made available to us but the grass was dead and parched. The weather
was a bit on the hot side so although we assembled on the pub side of the field
in what little shade was available on arrival, there was a mass exodus to
the far side of the field where the shade was appearing. Being by a pub,
there was no shortage of alcohol and most members took advantage of the
bar and coffee facilties, - not to say the loos! Fewer people than normal
took the opportunity to have a formal picnic and some ate at the pub. Perhaps
the heat kept some away. We had a turnout of only eight 'vintage' cars,
the other 15 being mostly of the Classic and Modern variety, possibly
because of the air conditioning.
