:: [ SVVS Lunchtime Meeting - The Red Barn, Blindley Heath  - October 2013 ] ::

This was our last outside mid-month meeting of the year but, unlike normal when the weather has been kind to us, it really bucketed down with cats and elephants. This meant that the turnout was initially ONE. The car park was flooded and resembled a lake, and there was no possibility of getting to the pub without getting the shoes thoroughly soaked. For quite some time the Chairman's XJS was the only SVVS car in the carpark but eventually it was joined by Hon Treasurer's Commutamerc. Absolutely ages later, they were joined by the only other proper car driven by the intrepid and very soaked Tony Tester with his topless Chrysler Phaeton. Apparently 'phaeton' was 19th-century term for "a sporty open carriage, typically with four extravagantly large wheels, very lightly sprung, with a minimal body, fast and dangerous" !! Sounds about right.

Inside the pub however were other Members who seemingly had sneaked in, in their moderns. Clutching a pint was a dry Julian Alderton chatting to Mrs Chairman, soon to be joined by Michel and Helen Gosset. Michel had promised to come in his recently re-launched Citroen, but bottled out, and despite having at least two other dry oldies, was driven in by his wife in a modern. Also there having a proper Sunday lunch in the dining room were Messrs Derrick Graham, with no Trojan in sight.  Hon Sec Malcolm Bailey and Sheena also came in a modern wondering weather to stay, and then did. Soon after came Messrs John Chapman. Mrs. Tester was seen in the bar, and as she was totally dry, guess she did not come with hubby in the same aquacar!! Another who came in a modern was Tony Marshall, and last, but not least, also in a modern, were Messrs Paul Scott.

Not an inspiring last outdoor meeting of the year, but hardly surprising in view of the weather.
