:: [ SVVS
Lunchtime Meeting - The Sportsman, Mogador - March 2022] ::
|
The pub is
located at the northern perimeter of our catchment area and is a new venue being
visited for the third time. Last time we visited in March 2020 it was the last
outside SVVS meeting for a couple of years because of the subsequent outbreak of
Coronavirus which put paid to everything. Two years later and three
injections later, our new Chairman Malcolm Bailey advised that we was unable to
come to the meeting because that very morning he had tested positive for having contracted
Covid. There seems to be a new largish outbreak of Covid amongst the local
'oldies' which fortunately is relatively mild. Malcolm did not miss much as
the the weather was equally unpleasant at it usually is here with a muddy car park
interspersed with large puddles of water. Slightly better
however that the previous two visits when it also snowed and/or hailed!
The Sportsman is an eatery type of pub built on the site of a historic hunting
lodge believed used by Henry VIII while out hunting. The pub is difficult to
find being at the end of a road leading to nowhere! The nowhere then becomes the
Downs and is therefore very picturesque and popular with walkers, The car park
is normally crammed as it was this year with an apparent charity walk having
taken place. Last year one of
our Members drove off in a huff at not being able to park, and this year one of
our Members drove off in a huff at not being able to get a table for lunch! Despite
everything, not an overwhelming turnout expected, or got. We had 20 cars which
we could account for, - some of which were moderns. We also had a
couple of 'oldies' who we have not seen for many months; Chris Cuss and Julian
Alderton, both looking hale and hearty.
