The SVVS SUMMER SAUNTER is non-competitive run into the countryside organised excellently as usual by our Hon Sec Malcolm
Bailey and his wife Sheena. The start and the destination is different every
year. This year the start was Priory Farm in Nutfield where the welcome was
organised by Tony Tester, while Malcolm went straight to the finish which was at
the Borde Hill Estate, just north of Hayward's Heath, - a 17
miles run which took about a half an hour along minor roads and through same
of the loveliest Surrey and Surrey countryside. 26 cars parked up at Borde Hill
Gardens.
The original Tudor 'Borde Hill House' in West Sussex was built in 1598 by
Sir Stephen Borde, a physician whose initials SB and 1598 appear above the west
porch. The Borde Hill Gardens in their current state originate from 1893 when
Colonel Stephenson Robert Clarke purchased the Borde Hill estate and started
laying out the gardens and the woodlands. The gardens feature internationally
recognised collection of rare shrubs and magnificent trees which had been gathered
from across the world by various plant hunters during the 40 year tenure of
Colonel Stephenson Robert Clarke, He further developed the gardens during the
20th century. The current custodians, Eleni and Andrewjohn Stephenson Clarke,
added the Jay Robins Rose Garden which is based on the original 1902 design found
in a Country Life magazine and named after their daughter Jay, It was designed
by RHS gold-medalist Robin Williams in 1995. Beyond the garden are extensive
woodlands and parkland which provides areas for further exploration and dog-walking.
Borde Hill also features sculpture exhibitions, music events and Opera! It
has a Restaurant and can provide wedding or event facilities.

The Summer Saunter Started at
Priory Farm in Nutfield where the keen bunch arrived early and were
greeted by the SVVS sail banner and shepherded by Tony Tester who took the
following photographs. Enforced by a cup of coffee and using a very
simplified route map prepared by Malcolm Bailey they set off on
their 17 mile trip to Boarde Hill. The uncompetitive journey of some 17
miles took about a half an hour along minor roads through same of the
loveliest Surrey and Sussex countryside.
