Outwood is a lovely village
in Surrey near Gatwick Airport and has the oldest working windmill in
Britain in the middle of the common. For many years the village has held
an annual Carnival which would have started with a procession of Vintage
Cars from the Windmill to the Carnival site adjacent to Lloyd Hall. In
some previous years the procession would have been headed with dancing
Morris-men which, while rather pretty, played havoc with old Morris
radiators boiling over trying to go along at snail's pace. Dame Judi Dench
is a local resident and the Carnival has frequently been opened by her at
the front of the parade seated in the little Austin belonging to fellow Outwood
resident Paul Daniels. Outwood is a very active charitable donation centre
with most activities being charity driven.
Bits of the Outwood showground are renowned for being a bit boggy which
has in the past resulted in SVVS Chairman Bozi Mohaceks's Rolls Royce
Shooting Brake getting firmly stuck in the mud requiring pulling out by an
equally large American Reynolds Boughton RB44 military four-wheel drive.
Like everywhere else Covid has played havoc with local events, so the
Outwood Show was not held last year. Our Member David Crittell, who is also
part pf the organisers of the Outwood Show, advised us that they were
trying to reactivate the Outwood Carnival in 2021 in a much smaller way
and asked us if we could provide a dozen vintage cars for display. The
Show was generally to be much smaller this year and was to be held within
the grounds of Lloyd Hall and the adjacent Council sports field. For many
years the SVVS supported the Outwood Village Carnival while Julian
Alderton, who lives in Outwood, was still active with old cars. Julian was
invited to come along in his modern but as his walking is still with two
crutches, he bailed out. The show was scheduled to take place again this
year on Saturday 4th of September.
The weather was good on the day, although it had been raining previously,
so our part of the showground was back to potentially boggy. We were
therefore asked to park on the dry bit under the trees parallel with the
road, and to be there between 13.00 and 16.00h. This was to be an official
SVVS event, and we had invited a selection of 'local' SVVS members who,
all bar one, did turn out as promised. We had a good selection of 14 cars
which was adequate for the space which had been allocated to us. Those
present, in alphabetical order, were Malcolm Bailey, Paul Daniels, Mike
Gorman, Michel and Helen Gosset, Rick Hone, Neville and Carol Jones, Bozi
Mohacek, Julie Mohacek, Chas Moody, Brian Rice, Tony and Julia Tester, Ian
Scott, and potential new Members Bert and Yvonne.
As the show was taking place at lunchtime, SVVS members came armed with
chairs and lunches and formed a large chat circle in the field which
remained there for most of the afternoon with continual chatting. The day
coincided with Mr and Mrs Chairman celebrating their 50th Wedding
Anniversary so they had bought along some bucks-fizz which helped to
lubricate things. See further down for more. The event was great fun so
that when it came to chucking out time at 4pm, everybody was surprised
where the time had flown.
The Show was attended as usual by Dame Judi Dench, who can be seen on one
of the photos at the bottom of the page. Lloyd Hall has recently been
rebuilt with an open oak beam structure which is quite impassive and used
extensively for local functions. Great day out and many thanks to all
members who came.
