The Red Barn at Blindley Heath is our last outside mid-month meeting of
the year and signals that Christmas and New Year are not far away. The
season is over, and due to Covid, over no sooner than it had begun. The
weather here can be quite unpredictable. Last time here it was gloomy cold
and drizzly with an unimpressive turnout of only eight proper vehicles. This
year the weather forecast promised nice and sunny but gave us equally
gloomy cold and drizzly. Despite the weather and probably as a release
from Covid, we had a far better turnout of 24 proper cars. A number
of further-flung Members came in moderns. Red
Barn is a very popular eatery with a lovely smart barn restaurant and has
a nice big roomy car park. The pub now has a large yurty pagoda outside
which was probably much used during the Covid era, but as the weather was
cold and miserable, only two tables were occupied, one by us. The pub can
sometimes be quite packed and getting a table to have lunch can be quite
difficult. It started off relatively light in numbers but soon built up to
a relatively full car park of which we occupied our normal far end slot.
The mix of cars was quite eclectic; from a 565 HP stallions of Aston
Martin to a 5 vintage horses of the 5CV Citroen. The actual A22 road speed
of the two cars was not very much different so the Aston had a surplus of
560 HP. The black American Mustang also in
the car park apparently had 480 green electric horses which could not eat
up the road any quicker either, with unnecessary 475 geegees.
