The Jolly Farmer
Pub in Horne is our Surrey Vintage Vehicle Society's 'winter indoor venue',
but during the summer holds a number of interesting outside shows. This includes
a number of One-make meetings, Tractor Rallies and Classics
Shows covered in our Gallery
Index Page. Our Members regularly
attend the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society meeting at this venue,
which was actually due to take place two days later, but due to rain and
wet ground, the HCVS meeting with their heavy lorries and trucks had to be
cancelled. This was perhaps just as well because there was overnight
a 2ft deep flood nearby locally.
THE AIRCOOLED VW SHOW was a multi-day event which included camping
overnight in them. The bulk of the cars on show were air-cooled
Volkswagens of the camper and beetle type. Large number were also of the
'rat rod' variety with deliberately worn-down, unfinished appearance,
typically lacking paint, showing rust, or having synthetic rust. Many of
them were also of the 'low rider' variety fitted with adjustable air-bag
suspension allowing the airbag to be deflated so vehicle is touching
the ground when parked, but pumping the airbag up prior to moving off, -
and anything in between while going along. Prizewinning ceremony is shown
below. DJ music was continually provided from the music tent, beer from
the pub and food from the burger van. This
meeting seems to be the first organised by a number of VW specialist
companies and was a multi-day event which included using the 'campers'
in vengeance by actually camping overnight in them. Many had the
'beds' still up in sleeping-mode. Fortunately, for them the weather had
been good for most of the period there. Our interest in visiting, apart
from it being our local The Jolly Farmer, was that most of the
family are Volkswagen aficionados and that they have a water-cooled camper
very similar to the vehicle shown in the first row of photos below. Theirs
actually has automatic transmission, slow but very very smooth. |
