:: [ SVVS Dinner - Reigate Manor Hotel, Reigate - April 2024 ] ::

Photos by  Bozi Mohacek

Reigate Manor Hotel was again the venue for the Annual SVVS Dinner and was superbly officiated over by our Chairman Malcolm Bailey and his wife Sheena. The date for the event was bought forward again and was again  held in the 'Garden Room'. The room has an intimate feel about it and is plenty big enough to accommodate the 65 SVVS Members and Guests who attended. The President and his party were late as they had not noted that the event was bought forward to be 7 for 7.30 !

The normal evening procedure was again followed by first meeting at the bar, this time the smaller 'Study Bar', and then being called to the dining area by the Master of Ceremonies, Tony Russell. There we were welcomed by Chairman Malcolm Bailey who thanked everybody for coming and also welcomed the Guest Speaker Ken Bare who is the Vice-President of the Surrey Hills Society. He was accompanied by their President Christine Howard.

Not much could be faulted with the quality of the meal and the efficiency of the service which smoothly bought us unnoticeably to the ceremonial bit of the evening, the presentation of the SVVS Awards. The PRESIDENT'S CUP for "Services to the SVVS" was presented to the Retiring SVVS Quiz Master Nick Woollett. The CHAIRMAN'S CUP for winning the "Treasure Hunt" was awarded to Gavin Tester. The HERO CUP was awarded to Andy Hall for the restoration of late Desmond Peacock's 1929 Amilcar CGSs. The Quiz 'Woollett Alfa' Trophy for again winning the Quiz was presented to Zak Stiling by the retiring Quizmaster Nick Woollett.

We were lucky to have Ken Bare as our Guest Speaker this year who gave a quite captivating speech on the formation and activities of the Surrey Hills Society. Surrey Hills extend from Haslemere eastwards to the Kent border and are an Area of Outstanding Beauty (AONB). Fifty percent of the Surrey Hills is wooded, with some classified as ancient woodland dating back to the 1600s. The Surrey Hills Society (SHS) was formed in 2008 with the specific objective of increasing public awareness of the area, with walks and visits to farms and Arts and Crafts properties. The SHS will again be supporting Surrey Day, a celebration of all that is good in Surrey, on Saturday 11th May. To accompany his talk, Ken had brought along a stock of SHS walks leaflet together with SHS newsletters.

Our M/C Tony Russell, who is a volunteer bush-whacker and tree-chopper in the Surrey Hills, thanked Ken for a most interesting and informative talk. Tony then presented Ken with a cheque donation of £200 to the Surrey Hills Society, and presented Chris with a bouquet of flowers. Malcolm Bailey then presented Ken with the customary  thanks to the Speaker of a couple of bottles of plonk.
