:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage photo  or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION/DATING:  SVVS HELP PAGES have some 5,000 Enquiries Received & Identified

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: UNKNOWN 1900 Tricar/Forecar
Couple of puzzling photos Received from Phil Smart (UK) of cars owned by same family. == Photo of a tricar in  Wollaston with two saddles, shallow engine nothing nothing above tank level, horizontal twin? Our Chas Moody suggested 'Quadrant' going from shape of tank only. Martin Shelley advises it is not an obvious make at first glance. Many tricars were built specifically to order, and very have survived beyond arliest years, so they are almost always hard to recognise. NEED HELP PLEASE

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1900 Mayfair Voiturette
Couple of puzzling photos Received from Phil Smart (UK) of cars owned by same family. One says 1916 but that might not be correct.  == Our veterans expert Ariejan Bos advises the two-seater is probably a 1900 Mayfair Voiturette, sold by Sports Motor Car Co, London. which was in fact a licensed Ateliers Linon car from Ensival verviers, Belgium. There was another marginally different Linon based product also in UK, the Hutton, made by JR Hutton of in Yorkshire. Also a similar Belgian Mans.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1912 Sunbeam 30HP 6 Cyl Chassis
Interesting Photo received from Paul Sutton-King (UK) asking if it would be possible to identify car on UK postcard. Short name on wheel hub. The engine block looks to be cast in two blocks of three but there are 12 plug leads? -- Our veterans expert Ariejan Bos advises this is the Sunbeam factory, but some  photo distortion. These are 1912 30hp 6 cyl. Chassis as below where the engine shown is almost identical, having the hand lever combination with one with grip, one with knob.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1908 Hotchkiss Model T Tourer 16'20HP
Another from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New Zealand), from a forum of old photos asking for information on the make of vehicle photographed at Morieux Church. -- Morieux is a coastal village in Brittany in northwestern France not far from Saint Malo and British Isalmnd of Jersey. The car is by an American Armaments maker who settled in France with a two-cannon badge, this car being a cca 1908 Hotchkiss Model T Tourer 16'20HP. Photos of church then and today.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1928 Dixi DA-2 3'15 Roadster
Another Interesting photo from one of our regulars Adrian Pascu-Tulbure of 1961 Sibu Romania, of Saxon Transylvania. -- Looks like a British Austin Seven so is more likely to be a German Automobilwerk Eisenbach - Dixi, who purchased an Austin licence 1927, and first small car was a Dixi DA-1 3'15. Dixi was bought by BMW to enter car making,  who developed this into a sportier BMW-Dixi DA-2 3'15 also available as a Two-seater Roadster with 3 banks of horizontal louvres just like this.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1913 Lorraine Dietrich Tourer
Another Interesting photo from one of our regulars Joao Ferreira (Portugal) of a car group including Horacio Paz dos Reis. Cotin?== Horacio Paz dos Reis was owner of a successful florist's shop in Porto, but also an amateur filmmaker taking many local activities and exhibiting imported films. After a technically bad show in Brazil 1897 he returned to flowers. Our Ariejan Bos advises the car is a French cca 1913 Lorraine Dietrich Tourer, bonnet size suggesting 18'20 HP Model.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1907 Maudslay 25'30 Lorry
Another from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New Zealand), fold photos asking for information on the make of vehicle registered Kirkaldie 1920. French Delaunay Belleville converted lorry? - - Reversed rad hoops, it is actually a British Coventry made 1920 London registered cca 1907 Maudslay 25'30 car, from pre-war spindly dumbirons, longish bonnet and bigger rad diameter, converted post WW1 to a lorry, or using up pre-war stock of cars, being registered as post war lorries.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1901 De Dion Bouton 4.5CV Tonneau
Another from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New Zealand), fold photos asking for information on the make of vehicle? Possible De Dion Bouton but Mark has doubts. -- Initial research advises that chap in car is the great Italian Opera Composer Giacomo Puccini, and further research from a number of sources agrees that this is his first car, advised as a 1901 De Dion Bouton 5CV Tonneau. And this is only a start in the confusion and errors about his early cars.  READ MORE HISTORY.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1909 Stevens-Duryea 24HP Limousine
On our Unidentified Cars Help Page 1 from 2005 we have a Photo which we have not been able to identify. The visible radiator and bonnet as well as the type of non-split wheels used suggested a European car. -- Regular contributor Varun Coutinho thinks this is a cca 1909 Stevens-Duryea 24HP Model X Limousine. Stevens-Duryea was an American manufacturer from Chickopee Falls making innovative and luxury cars from 1901 to 1927 to Duryea Design and Stephens 'Arms & Tool' money

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Unknown 1920s Duckback Racer
Another possible library photo from one of our regulars Joao Ferreira (Portugal) of a an interesting modified racer. == We are generally not able to help with 'specials' and with racing cars because these are normally one-off vehicles which are built for a specific race or race series series and do not necessarily have recognizable features, even the radiators, that were on everyday cars. Thisone has Unusual double ducksback body with double rear springs. Alvis badge?  HELP PLEASE.
