Leigh Flower Show and Country Fayre 20th July 2024 Report by
Steve Martin
Another fine and interesting show was held at Leigh recreation ground. It
is a lovely venue for locals and others who have travelled a bit further
to see a huge selection of home-grown local displays and a diverse
selection of classic vehicles. Our club has exhibited cars there for many
years and this year was well attended by SVVS with our trademark sail flag
and display board on show.
The weather was kind to us, unlike last year
which was sadly a washout. The variety of classics was excellent with
Alvis, Jaguar, Triumph, Rover, Ford, M.G., BMW. Chevrolet, Dodge, Morris,
Austin and more well represented.
An impressive collection of classic
bikes was shown by Dorking and District Motorcycle Club with a wartime
Matchless, an Ariel and a Velocette.
Our very own Graham Capel amazed us
all by arriving with his latest acquisition, the disused airframe of a
1946 Auster light aircraft mounted on a trailer, Graham bought it on ebay
for £82 and bolted an inert air-cooled VW flat 4 engine on the nose with
a microlite propeller. I am sure children have a lot of fun with that
pretending to fly aerobatics and drop bombs!
Team Tutt bought along their
Austin 7 and Ford Prefect, soon settling down to enjoy a rather good
picnic! Enhancing the classic transport theme was a display of tractors
including a beautifully restored massive 1972 Massey Ferguson 1150 powered
by a mighty Perkins 8.3 litre V8 engine. What a great show, something for
everyone, stationary engines, wood carving, bee keeping, animal rescue
charities, floral displays and ferrets, beware, they can bite! And yes, a
real ale bar. Everything a village show should be, well attended, well
organised and many thanks to the Leigh and District Cottage Garden Society
for inviting the SVVS.
