2021  Brighton Veteran Run

The objective of the SVVS Summer Saunter has always been to encourage members to drive their cherished vehicles along roads contemporary to our vehicles to some place of interest. The idea behind this year's run was for participants to journey from selected start points to via Norwood Hill to Newdigate. To this end, five suggested routes were available, together with notes of places visited along each route - although a number of members made their own way to the show, including those who lived locally. After some indifferent weather forecasts over the preceding week and some ominous clouds on the day, only a brief shower interrupted some otherwise glorious sunshine.

SVVS, along with other clubs, had been invited to display vehicles and we contributed a spread of cars, from David's 1914 Singer to Secretary Peter's 2002 Jaguar XK8. Founder member Clive and Myetta had driven from Fareham in Hampshire in their 1931 Morris Cowley to start their saunter from the Outwood windmill. Show vehicle organiser and SVVS member Graham brought four vehicles including a veteran-look-alike vintage Ford-based 'Farm cart', Ferrari GTO replica to a lovely Lotus Elite.

 Tony's 'Bonny and Clyde' 1929 Chrysler 70 drew attention, while PRO Tony's 1937 Ford 7W tourer justified its permanently erected hood. Denis and Stephanie's VW T2 camper might have come in handy had the rain persisted. Italian sporting models were represented by Chas and Kevin's brace of Lancia Fulvias and Alex's Alfa 105 Guilia Spider. James' Jaguar XK140, Gary's Ford Consul Classic, Roger and Lynette's Dodge Charger Super Bee and Malcolm's Opel Manta illustrated both the evolution and differing interpretations of the sports coupe from the mid-50s to mid-70s. 

Editor Malcolm's rare Audi 80 Sport provided an early 80's more family-practical alternative. Steve's MG J2 and Alan's Austin 7 special represented an earlier indigenous sports cars concept while John's Austin Healy 100/6, Mike's Morgan and Arthur's MGB GT V8 epitomised some British favourites. More luxurious cars were represented by former Hero award winner Geoff's immaculately restored Rover P4 105S and by Michael's P4 60, Nick's S-type Jaguar while David and Celia's well-travelled 1931 Rolls 20/25 complemented a late model Silver Cloud III further down the field. All in, a good showing of the SVVS banner and an enjoyable day out.
