SVVS Lunchtime Meeting, The Star -  Lingfield - September 2023

The Star is now a popular eatery and traditionally followed-on a couple days after the SVVS exhibition of vehicles at Reigate Tunnel during the Heritage Open Days. This generally resulted  in Members wives tending  not to let their men-folk attend both meetings, - and therefore, the Star attendances have been a bit Sparse. This should not have been the predominant reason in this particular case, but the weather can. After many weeks of near drought in the latter part of the summer, accompanying a 'heat wave' in the 32C+ range, the weather chose our two hours on the Sunday lunchtime to break and deposit significant bits of the Atlantic over Lingfield. The weather forecasters had warned of it, and an enormous middle-of-the-night thunderstorm confirmed the probability. Lightning struck the church next door and the lightning conductor passed the annual test, - not so our levitating airborne dog ! On a personal note Mr. President was confined to bed on this day due to another attack of an as yet undefined cause by Messrs NHS, of an angeoedema, which, cheerfully, ranks as USA's most potent life threatening allergic disorder.

The Star in Lingfield signals that the 'summer season' is drawing to a close, which is a bit of a shame. The weather for most of the Summer this year was great and it is a shame it had to end with a splash. The turnout of cars was predictably low, some 10 proper vehicles, down 11 on last year. The nature of the vehicles generally being used in the Society is changing. There is a gradual turn from 'vintage vehicles' to 'classic vehicles'. Perhaps the Membership is changing too. Older Members tended to have 'vintage cars' because these were the old cars in 'their time', as 'veteran cars' had been for the generation before. As Members have aged and passed away, their cars have gone into museums and collections, and into the upper price bracket and are now not within easy financial reach of the current generation of 'old car enthusiasts'. For them it is current 'classic cars' that are the old cars of their time and generally still priced relatively reasonably.
