SURREY OAKS;

Affectionately known as The S’oaks by
us Newdigate locals, although it doesn’t take a lot of working out why,
this lovely Surrey pub has hosted our June meetings for well over 20 years.
Always popular and with a good size car park, this year saw over 30
‘proper’ club cars in attendance, the variety was amazing, reflecting
the impressive diversity of our vehicles. This highlighted one of the
delights of a multi make club, but Surrey Vintage is not just about fine
cars, it’s all about the people, nice people with nice cars. I’m not
going to list all the names of attendees like the school assembly register I
well remember from so many years ago, “Russell major…present Sir”,
failure to respond immediately was met by a fierce bellow of “pay
attention boy!” followed by a deadly accurately thrown piece of chalk!
So, let’s look at some of the cars. A
rare 1971 Austin Sprite, 1967 Daimler 250 V8, Ford Model Y, Singer, 1934
Austin 7, Bentley 3 litre Speed Model, Ford Model A V8 hot rod roadster,
1938 Ford 8 7Y, superbly restored and making its debut appearance, a lovely
1973 Lancia 124, another 1934 Austin 7, Alfa Spider, MGB V8, a fine HMC
Healey 100/6, 2002 Morgan 4/4, 1972 Jaguar XJ6 , 1956 Ford Zephyr Zodiac, a
nice Lotus Esprit SE, 1974 Triumph TR6, a magnificent 1929 De Soto model K
roadster, 1929 Chrysler 70, a lovely 1929 low chassis Lagonda, 1964 Alfa
Julia Spider, Rover 95 saloon, 1967 Jaguar MK 2 extensively modified and
fitted with a Jaguar 4 litre V8 engine, nice, 1961 Daimler SP250, our
classic motorcycling fraternity was well represented by a lovely 1966
Triumph Tiger Cub. And last but not least, the faithful 1937 Ford 7W tourer
made it all the way up the road from its garage less than a mile away. Just
fitted with a new battery, a Lucas 501 6 volt priced at an eye watering £190!!!,
I did get one a bit cheaper though. My apologies for not mentioning all
attending cars, it got a bit hectic with notepad and pen and doing my PR
stuff.
Delighted to see our lovely ladies
enjoying a girly natter over a few glasses of white wine outside the pub
too, I’m certain that they weren’t talking about engines and gearboxes!
Huge thanks to my pal hot rod and drag racing historian, film maker and
author Nick Pettitt who drove his yellow Chevy engined V8 Ford Y hot rod all
the way up from the South coast to film the event for us. You can check it

It has not escaped the Webmaster's notice
that neither Tony Russell nor Nick Pettit made any mention of the Webmaster's
car being present at the Surrey Oakes meeting. So, for the record, - I
was there too. in my blue Supercharged V8 4.2 Jaguar XKR Sports Coupe, which I
agree, is neither a Hotrod nor a Ford!
