:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage photo  or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  1902 Toledo Steamer Dos-a-dos
Very interesting photo found while surfing on a website dealing with history of Japanese motor industry where photo sais is Panhard vehicle being used as a bus in 1903 Japan, when cars were mainly used as public transport. -- We have advised the website that the photo is not of a French Panhard Levasssor but is of a specially bodied and overloaded American cca 1902 Toledo Steamer Dos-a-dos. It is probably a model A which has 6.5HP 2- cylinder steam engine. Read More Toledo History.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  1903 Prescott 7.5 Steam Carriage
Another puzzling old grainy picture posted on a forum of old photos asking for identification of the make of vehicles.
-- This is obviously an American steam vehicle of which quite a variety were. Probably the most well known are Stanley and Locomobile. It is actually very difficult to tell them all apart at first glance so attention has to be paid to the steam controls. This one has four taps above the valve block and sight glass so New York made cca 1903 Prescott 7.5HP Folding Seat Steamer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  1907 Darracq 20'28 Chassis
Interesting historical photo received from Fraser Sloan
(UK) asking for identification of car, perhaps foreign due to number plate, but equally it may have been some sort of trade plate as the Rootes Motor Works placard at the back certainly gives the indications.  -- In view of badge we initially looked at Crossley but not a match. The only other similar widows peak radiator/badge combination was cca 1907 Darracq; from the engine configurations, it is probably a 20'28.  Read More History…

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  1908 Clement Bayard Two-Seater
Lovely picture postcard posted on a forum of old photos asking for identification of unknown vehicle. -- Postcard says Vallon-en-Sully which is in absolute middle of France on the river Cher and is renowned for having a number of Chateau castles and ruins, and seemingly old car meetings. The car on this photo is a bit unusual being a French cca 1908 Clement Bayard Two-Seater, possibly the 10'12,  made just before the brand turned to having better known coalscuttle Renault type bonnets.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:  Unknown Tourer
Another interesting screen grab received from Mark Dawber

It was suggested a possible Lancia? -- Too Many people to be sure. The high location of the headlamps does indeed suggest a Lambda but the low doorline not until c1921 when the louvers became very thin and multitudinous. If Italian, could be the rather obscure cca 1925 FATA Aurea Torpedo, but some German cars of period had low doorline?
