IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1902 Darracq 12HP
Photo received from Geoff Penn,
Leeds, (UK) who is
hoping we can help to identify a vintage car which forms part of
our family history. He knows the vehicle was owned by his Great
Grandfather. It is said he was joint owner of the car with the local
doctor and that it was the first car in Wanstead. We can confirm that
F734 was an Essex County Council registration but dating records no
longer exist. Our Tim Harding has identified it as
a cca 1902
Darracq 12HP registered few years later.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1905 Clement-Talbot Tonneau
Photo received from Emily MacMath,
Trowbridge (UK)
showing ancestors from the Bristol area. The older gentleman at
the rear of the car is the owner, but she is not sure of his identity!
Are records available to track down owners of older vehicles? The DVLA in Swansea is now the main point of contact by
payment and filling in a form. The car in the picture has been suggested
by three of our experts as a cca 1905
Clement - Talbot, registered in
Bristol. Click picture for more info.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1912 La Buire Two Seater
Same Photo received from two sources (Australia)
simultaneously but from the same
organisation: Des Johnstone (Chief Commissioner, Clan Johnston/e
Association of Australia) and Dorothy Rook the Clan's Genealogy
Secretary. They were trying to establish a date for the photo. The
body style was prevalent during the 1909 to 1914 period. Radiator header
tank with a central badge and two triangular panels tapering towards the
sides suggests a cca
1912 La Buire. Click picture.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1912
Arrol-Johnson 15.9HP
Photo received from Rob Martin (Australia)
of what he thinks is an Arrol-Johnston, (could be quite wrong
though!). This photo was taken in Australia, found in researching the
family history, and has been heavily restored. We can confirm that the
only other car with an un-contoured top to the radiator header tank was
a Phoeninix and that some went to Australia. However we feel due to the
embossed line pressings in the scuttle bonnet it is probably a cca
1912 Arrol Johnson possibly a 15.9hp.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1913 Standard 9.5HP Rhyl
Photo received from Kevin J
Prince (UK) who is doing some family
history and came across a photograph with a vintage car. He would like
to know what it is. DVLA have said it is too old for their
records. We are not sure if they used the DVLA pay service Form V888.
Trying to identify the middle of a car is difficult but we are sure that
the car shown is a cca
1911-14 Standard 9HP Rhyl. To me the pointers are to
1911, but our more knowledgeable Tim Harding thinks it is
1913 -1914.

INTERESTING VEHICLE: cca
1913 Pilot Light Car
Interesting email received from Neil (UK)
who has a book published by "Pilot Cars and Motor Schools Ltd,
Training institute of London." in 1913, called "200 Practical
Points On Motoring". He was interested if this would be of
interest to enthusiasts or collectors. If anybody is interested please
get in touch with us. In 1914 the company name changed to "Pilot
Cars and Motor Schools Ltd". No details are shown for
production figures nor how long the company lasted. Click
the Photo.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1913 Daimler Charabanc
Photo received from David Jones
from Liverpool (UK) taken on a pic-nic, in July
1913, organised by a masonic lodge, Downshire No 594, in
Liverpool. The trip was from Liverpool to Northop in Flintshire, hence
to Chester, where they went boating on the River Dee. There must have
been a breakdown evidenced by the feet sticking out from under the
vehicle! He wondered is such vehicles are still roadworthy to replicate
the pic-nic. We suggested contact with Historic Commercial Soc, HCVS.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1914 Commer Bus
Photo received from
Glynn Berry (UK) who is interested in the
building shown on the photo, Pier House, on the coast at Lee-on-the-Solent
near Portsmouth. He was curious to know what year this was taken, and
hoped the bus would give a clue. It does indeed. The bus livery is that
of Gosport and Fareham Tramways but strangely the registration number
had been issued by London County Council. The vehicle is a cca
1914 Commer Bus photographed approx. 1914/15. Click
photo for more info.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1919/20
Minerva NN Tourer
Photos received from Anupam
Agarwalla (India)
who is contemplating purchasing and rebuilding a Minerva four seat
tourer. With the assistance of the Minerva
Club, Tim Lemoine, we can confirm that
the car is a cca
1919 Minerva Type NN. These were made
between 1919 - 1921 and had a four cylinder 20 hp engine of 3570
cc. Tim has provided a picture of a similar Type XX car which shows the
type of coachwork that would have been fitted and matching the rear
section of the photo.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1920 Douglas 10.5 Light Car
Photo received from Tim Sewell,
Melbourne (Australia) who has been on a
number of online galleries looking for cars with headlamps beside the
windscreen, but has found nothing at all. Is it from the Bullnose Morris
range? The two occupants are his father and grandfather, probably taken
near his grandfather's home in Co. Durham possibly when his parents
(resident in India) returned to England for their marriage. The cars is
a cca
1920 Douglas 10.5 Light Car. (Or could be a 1914 model
?)

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1921 Hillman 11
Photo received from Don Westcott (UK) who is
an SVVS member moved to Wiltshire and joined the Friends of the
Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum in Calne. They have been trying to identify
the mystery car. Registration appears to be U or H 8674. Cannot be H as
this was Middlesex 1903/12. U 8764 was issued by County Borough of
Leeds which had reached U 7729 by January 1921 and had changed to NW
registrations by October 1921. Car is 1921
Hillman 11 2-seater/dickey.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1922 Morris Cowley Two Seater
Another of the photos received from Peter
Guyton (UK). This one shows Maggie Peel
about to leave Welwyn Garden City, Herts, to drive back to Cambridge in
August 1926. This car is either the same or similar to another photo of
a car that we have already identified. This
picture gives a full front view showing the registration number. CE
9994 was issued by Cambridge County Council in mid 1922, dating
this as a 1922
Morris Cowley. Third photo is confirmed as
being the back of the car.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1923
Vulcan 20HP Tourer
Photo received from Roger Corfield (UK)
of what he has always believed to be a Belsize, because his
father told him that grandfather had owned one. From the ages of the
children, the photo must have been taken in the early 1920s, probably
1922 or 1923. We can advise that registration EK2**8 was issued by Wigan
CBC in about November 1922. Although the radiator has superficial
resemblance to a Belsize we can advise this is much more unusual, being
a 1922
Vulcan 20HP Tourer.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1923 Standard Model SLO
One of two more photos received from Peter
Guyton (UK). This one shows a car belonging
to a Mr. William Wilberforce, his wife Madge with Mrs. Hilda Hopkins on
the pavement. This photograph is dated as July 1926. This car is either
the same or similar to another photo of a car that we have already
identified. This picture gives a full front view
showing the registration number. DN 6031 was issued by York
County Borough Council in late 1923, dating this as 1923
Standard model SLO.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1924
ABC Super Sports
One of two more photos received from John
Phillips (UK).
He had again declined to put SVVS-MAIL
in the 'subject'
line and his enquiry was auto-diverted with the thousands of
SPAM emails we get. Accidentally
spotted in the clearout. On the back of the two seater photo is the date
Sept 1927. Quite an unusual car being a cca
1924 ABC Super Sports. Air cooled with
dummy radiator whose filer cap was actually the petrol cap. This
resulted in frequent problems of petrol being topped up with water!

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1925 Morris Oxford Bullnose
Another photo received from Kevin J
Prince (UK) who is doing some family
history and is giving us near impossible tasks ! A grainy photo from a
difficult angle. He thinks the number is GB 5643. GB is a Glasgow
Borough Council registration issued December 1921 and July 1925. GB5643
is half way, so approx 1923. The car is rather typical of the period
with literally dozens of makes having similar configuration. Two of our
experts agree it is a 1925
Morris Oxford 13.9HP, likely a Bullnose.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1925
Wolseley 'Light Saloon'
Photo received from Rob Brewer (UK)
of his grandfather Reginald who enlisted for the 1st World War
while still only 17 years old and returned injured. He is believed the
first person in the family to own a car but not sure if this is it.
Judging by his age in the photo it is post war I. Registration is almost
impossible to make out, perhaps ON 1054. We can advise that the car is a
cca 1925 Wolseley 'Light Saloon' perhaps 14/40 or
16/35. Registration is Birmingham County Boro' Council 1925.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1928
Packard Town Car ?
The second of the two photos received from
John Phillips (UK)
auto-diverted with the thousands of SPAM emails into our Dump folder.
Accidentally spotted in the clearout. He advises that the larger car
picture dates from around 1927-1928. I think it is a cca 1928
Packard all-weather Town Car but with a Landaulette body. Our very knowledgeable Tim Harding to whom I
would normally defer thinks it is a Rolls Royce 20hp with a Continental
Landaulette Body. I stick to mine!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1920s
Charabancs
Four photos received from Jim Type (UK).
Photo are from a series taken from glass plates he was given by an
elderly lady in 1979 when he was 'on the buses' in Andover. Her Husband
was a professional photographer in London and most of his work was for
Hall Lewis/Park Royal. We are not much into commercials but our Tim
Harding is a wizz at old charabancs. He has identified the the four
photos as a Dennis,
an Albion Viking, a Berliet and a Daimler or AEC,
and is generally right.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1930
Ford Model AA Horsebox
Two more photos received from Jim Type (UK)
from a series taken from glass plates he was given by an
elderly lady in 1979 when he was 'on the buses' in Andover. Her Husband
was a professional photographer in London and most of his work was for
Hall Lewis/Park Royal. We are not much into commercials but our Tim
Harding has identified the Horsebox as a cca
1930 Ford Model AA long wheelbase. He
thinks the second photo is of a Chenard
Walcker Tractor as LMS used many of
that make.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1931 Ford Model A
Photo received from Joanne
Savile (UK). Please could we identify this
car and year. She thinks the car probably belonged to a Robert Foster of
Newburgh, New York but no dates; perhaps 1922 - 25. It is from collection of family photographs from various countries. The car in
photo is much later than her suggested dates being cca
1931 Ford Model A Standard Coupe. Later input advises person
next to car is Dominic Shira, Upper Jay, NY, Janitor at High School and
original owner.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1930 American Roadster
Very fuzzy series of scans received from M J
Drent of Haren (Holland) saying
that the grand-parents of his wife lived in the Dutch East Indies and
were rather rich. He is converting an old movie to DVD and wanted to
know in what cars they drove and the planes they flew. I am relatively
sure that the car is of the 1929-1931 period and by the windscreen
pillars that the car is probably American, Dodge, De Soto, or
Nash. Our Tim Harding agrees saying it could be cca
1930 Chevrolet?
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1934 Aero 622
Photo received from
Wolfgang Steiner from Mantel (Germany).
" Your Homepage is great and I send you this picture that I think
is an English make." This was presumably because of the
right hand drive steering wheel. This rather confused because the car
did not 'look' British. However, our Tony Oakes and others spotted that
it was an Aero manufactured in Czechoslovakia where they drove on the
left until 1939, and therefore had RHD steering. The car is
a cca 1934
Aero 622.

HELP WITH SPARE PARTS: cca
1951 Wichkham Railcar
Intriguing photo received from Jonathan
Flood (UK) who
is restoring a 1951
Railcar built by D Wickham & Co Ltd of Ware,
Hertfordshire. Even though it is a rail vehicle, all the engine and
electrical fittings are standard commercial vehicle items – Ford V8
engine, Lucas Lights, Lucas Horns etc, but he cannot find the source of
the two interior lights, and the source or repairer of Lucas
windscreen demisters. Please contact us if you have any ideas where
these can be obtained/repaired.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1911
UNIDENTIFIED
Photo received from John Lambert,
Epsom (UK).
The chauffeur in the snap is his grandfather who began working
life as coachman, then gained his certificate in 'automobiles' in May
1905. Later drove for Sir Alfred Lewis, MD of the Nat Prov Bank during
the 1930's, and subsequently for Sir Ralph Richardson the actor.
Unfortunately none of our experts have been able to identify the car
which was registered in London between April 1910 and July 1911. Any
help much appreciated.

PHOTOS NOT YET IDENTIFIED:
YOUR
H E L P IS NEEDED PLEASE !
As can be seen from our Help Pages we
normally do succeed in identifying practically all vehicle photos which
we receive. Occasionally some photos may take time and very occasionally
we get stuck. Clicking on the photo
on the right opens the page
containing some photos we are yet to crack ! Any
help would be very much appreciated.
