:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

Aldays 10'12 Tourer
Another interesting photo received from
Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from a
forum of old photos and asking for information on the make of vehicle ?
-- We have had this very car before, but
different event/photo, on our Help Page 140 where we have identified it
as a cca
1907 Alldays & Onions 10'12 Tourer.
Car has no registration plate so photo is unlikely taken in UK and
therefore the suggested wedding in Blenheim, New Zealand, is a
probability. Another Alldays on this page.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1907/8
Darracq 10'12 Tourer
Another interesting photo received from
Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from a
forum of old photos and asking for information on the make of vehicle
in Wales 1912. Darracq? -- I would agree cca
1907/8 Darracq 10'12 Tourer. These
seem to have a wider 'bottom tank' to the radiator than the others
while having the extra wide top. Some 8'10 also had that feature but
had shorter bonnet. Soon after the radiator shape changed a
number of times. Company was then under British control.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1907
Alley-MacLellan Steam Wagon
Another from a number of interesting period photos from a glass
negative from out regular contributor Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK).
Inresting vehicle which shas a Lanark, Scotland,
reg, but is working in Birmingham. The scuttle round the front is
even height which normally suggests Leyland rather than Sentinel, but
Mike Sutcliffe advises it is a
cca 1907
Alley-MacLellan Steam Wagon,
probably 6 ton, that was the precursor of the Sentinel company while
still in Glasgow, in Scotland.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1910
Star 15HP Tourer
Couple of lovely historical old photos received from Chris Regan
(UK) asking for information on the make of vehicle shown, after
not finding them on the internet. -- No real
excuse for not identifying the obvious logo on the rad, 'a star'. This
is a cca
1910 Star 15HP Tourer made in
Wolverhampton. Bicycles, motorcycles and cars 1898 to 1932. First car
was a Star-Benz 3.5HP. Became 6th largest in UK early days. Commercials
in WW1. Problems helped by Guy Motors but closed 1932.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1911
Austin 15HP Ambulance
Another from a number of interesting period photos from a glass
negative from out regular contributor Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK).
-- Very unusual car, a cca
1911 Austin 15HP, probably an
ambulance. Initially available as Town Carriage or Taxi, later also as
a van, had a 25ft turning circle. Based on normal 1908-1914 15HP of but
unconventional layout four-cylinder 2.5L engine under the driver's
seat, four cylinders in same casing as top of crankcase, engine and
gearbox on a subframe.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1911
Argyll 15HP Tourer
Lovely historical old photo posted on Rootshat Forum asking for
information on the make of vehicle . - This looks
like British vehicle fitted with a handsome body and rather unusual but
magnificent windscreens for both front and rear passengers. The car was
actually manufactured in Scotland by company founded in 1899, later
moved to magnificent factory in Alexandia near Glasgow where went
bankrupt. Reformed in 1910; closed 1930. This is a
cca 1911 Argyll 15HP
Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1912
Napier 12 Seater Charabanc
Interesting photo received from leyland
bus expert Mike Sutcliffe (UK)
in exchange for one he was helping us
with. Can we help back? -- This is a
vehicle based on a Napier
chassis. Two scenarios possible. Our
Ariejan Bos thinks an old car chassis modified, lengthened and
converted to a charabanc in c1912 in which case probably a cca 1906
Napier 26HP. Otherwise as Napier were making Vans and Lorries at the
time, it could be a conversion on a new car, in which case cca 1812
Napier 30HP.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1913
Sunbeam Landaulette
Lovely photo received from Euan Bryson (UK)
advising that vehicle was used as a taxi in the 1920's. Mother
told him it was owned and driven by Louis Young in Central Scotland. In
the photo with loads of children piled into the back is great aunt Nan
was being driven to the railway station, distance of about 1 mile! - Registration
MS 985 was issued by Stirling Council 1913 so car is cca
1913 Sunbeam Landaulette, probably the
16'20, or perhaps the smaller 12'16. Landaulettes were often taxis.

|

Alldays 12-14hp Tourer
Another interesting photo from a forum of old photos and asking
for information on the vehicle. --
Relatively unusual British car made by Alldays & Onions Pneumatic
Co in Birmingham founded 1898 making bicycles motorcycles and cars from
1903 with De Dion Engines. This is a later cca 1914

the Enfield Autocar Co to form
Enfield Allday which made cyclecars, cars and tractots to 1925.

Hallford WD Lorry
Another from a number of interesting period photos from a glass
negative from out regular contributor Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK).

half sloping bonnet. Registration is Birmingham CBC. This is a
relatively unusual cca

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1914
Ford Model T Truck
Three grainy photos posted on AACA Forum
by Paul Boothby (UK)
asking for help. -- We feel this is all
the same car, a cca 1914 Ford Model T Truck. Top is the original car
and the lower two are same car updated by the fitting at a later date
of the external centre parts of a post cca
1918 Model T, with upright 50/50
windscreen, leaving original radiator. Hence bad fit. Front mudguard
has reinforcing and a bill, and the rear is curved. Registration
is Blackpool CBC but dating data lost.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1915
Pierce Arrow 3 Ton Truck
Another from a number of interesting period photos from a glass
negative from out regular contributor Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK).
-- Triangular heavily finned header tank to the
radiator which is indicative of the American company Pierce Arrow,
makers of luxury cars. From 1911 they also made range of sturdy trucks
with engines of 7.5 Litres. OP3354 is Birmingham CBC reg of 1915 so
this is a cca
1915 Pierce Arrow 3 Ton Truck. 14,000
used by British and French Armies for WW1.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1922
Daimler 4'20 Limousine
Much disguised photo received from Mark
Dawber (New Zealand) from
a forum of old photos and asking for information on the make of vehicle
in Holland. Despite posters for Studebaker, could this be a British
Daimler?
-- After a lot of looking at such pointers
as open cockpit, slight slope bonnet, finned radiator, quick detachable
wire wheels, no front brakes, higher removable lamps, I would agree
this could well be a cca
1922 Daimler 4'20 Open Drive Limousine.
rather than the later D 16.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1922
Cubitt 16'20 Tourer
Couple of lovely historical old photos received from Chris Regan
(UK) asking for information on the make of
vehicle shown, after not finding them on the internet. --
Difficult one helped by capital C in logo . 'C' is for a cca
1922 Cubitt 16'20 Tourer made in
Aylesbury, bodies by nearby Iris car company. Cubitts were civil
engineers, builders of Royal residence Buckingham Palace, Osborne Hse.,
and Cenotaph, venturing briefly into American style car production
1920-25 of about 3,000 cars.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1927
Ford Model T Runabout
Lovely historical picture on a Forum asking for information on
the make of vehicle. -- Interesting photo taken
at a Hollywood film set. The gentleman on the right can be identified
as the younger Winston Churchill. The car on the left has a transverse
front spring and a radiator which look like a Ford T but the bonnet
louvres seem to run all the way? It is indeed a cca
1927 Ford Model T, probably Runabout,
one from the last series 1926/27 which had multiple louvres rather than
6.

Renault 10HP Fourgon
Cinema screen grab taken from a French silent film "Madam

luxurious life in Paris, chases dashing Legionnaire officer to deserts
of Sahara. The car is French with a coalscuttle bonnet, no louvers on

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1935
Austin Light 22'4 Van
Another from a number of interesting period photos from a glass
negative from out regular contributor Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK).
-- Strange combination of chassis and body not immediately
recognisable. Unusual looking flat radiator. Our Tony Oakes was
relatively sure the base car was an early Austin at a time of a
squarish flat metallic radiator before the front went all curved. The
back looks more like a Morris. Bit of digging suggests this is a cca
1935 Austin Light 12'4 Van.

Sauer 2CR Coach
Cinema screen grab taken from a British

Interesting car made by Maybach. Identification pointers are that is
had similar sized doors, so is a 'convertible not coupe', had bonnet
flaps rather than louvres, has no badge bar, has bumper overriders,
scuttle mounted wipers, two hinge door, all of which suggests a
cca 1939 Maybach SW38 Cabriolet.

Another interesting photo received from out regular contributor

Story of post war secret service attempts to deliver a reel of secret
tape to Paris. -- The vehicle is an altered box
