IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1904/5 Darracq Dos-a-Dos
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was puzzled by this photo which
appeared on Facebook a short while ago lacking identification. The car
looks to be an early Darracq - maybe? --
Obviously not a totally reliable one;
guess not many garages locally to call a mechanic out! Our
Ariejan Bos feels this is indeed a cca
1904/5 Darracq. The body is difficult
to see,but is either a Dos-a-Dos or could be double tonneau with 2x2
opposite seats, rather popular at the time.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1908 Riley 12'18 Tourer
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or
old Postcards, including those for sale on Ebay, of very interesting
ancient machinery which has not yet been identified, so we have a go ! --
Identification feature of a round radiator
on a relatively small car and a scuttle mounted fuel tank suggests cca

having V-twin engine of 2113cc, unusually fitted with solid wheels,
cost £247.

1900's. The closest match is a 1909 Humber Tourer. --
Well done, yes indeed a Humber Tourer.
Typical Humber radiator. Dating features are similar hubs back and
front wheels, rudimentary front driver's door and leather skirt. This
would be a Coventry made cca 1908 Humber 15 HP Tourer.

on Facebook short while ago lacking identification. Artillery insignia
on the radiator. --
"Made like a Gun" was
trade mark of Enfield Cycle Company of Redditch, Worcestershire, making
armaments and cycles. Enfield Autocar made cars from 1906. The
Autolette had a similar radiator but we think this is the bigger cca

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1925 Austin 12/4 Saloon
Period photo sent in to Rootschat by Christian Poulsen (UK)
taken in Northumberland and was wondering if anyone could identify
which model Austen this was?
--
Registration NL is Norhumberland County C. The first number can only be a 6 or 8, with three other
numbers. So either6 is 1924 or 8 is 1925. No later than December
1925 It would indeed seem to be a
cca
1925 Austin 12/4 Saloon. It became
known as the "Heavy Twelve Four" to differentiate it from the
later "Light
12/6".

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1927 Chevrolet Capitol Truck
Cinema screen grab taken from a 2017
Spanish film "Incerta Glòria" (Uncertain Glory) being
investigated by IMCDB. Film about war-torn Spain and young officer who
falls for a deceitful femme-fatale. --
Relatively difficult car to identify as
dark and small picture. Not many identification features beyond
the just discernable widow's peak on the lower part of the radiator header
tank' there for a short time. This
suggests it being cca
1927 Chevrolet Truck, probably Series
AA Capitol.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1928 Chevrolet One Ton Bus
Cinema screen grab taken from a 2017
Spanish film "Incerta Glòria" (Uncertain Glory) being
investigated by IMCDB. Film about war-torn Spain and young officer who
falls for a deceitful femme-fatale. --
Vehicle is a small bus and rather well
built and proportioned. Many features point to it being American and
chassis length suggests a it being a lorry base. It was a vehicle built
in many locations in USA and overseas, and is cca
1928 Chevrolet One Ton Truck fitted with bus body.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1933 Citroen 8CV Rosalie
Cinema screen grab taken from a 2017
Spanish film "Incerta Glòria" (Uncertain Glory) being
investigated by IMCDB. Film about war-torn Spain and young officer who
falls for a deceitful femme-fatale. --
Relatively difficult car to identify as dark and
small picture. Not many identification
features beyond it being 1930s square car, apart from the unusual rear
numberplate and lights position on the separate trunk. This suggests it
as French and dates it as cca
1933 Citroën 8 CV Rosalie.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1933 Citroen Rosalie Boulangere
Cinema screen grab taken from a 2017
Spanish film "Incerta Glòria" (Uncertain Glory) being
investigated by IMCDB. Film about war-torn Spain and young officer who
falls for a deceitful femme-fatale. --
Car is obviously a Citroen Van but not
immediately obvious as to precise model. Identification features are a

sloping slightly veed rad with chevrons and canvas van sides. All
points to cca

Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) sent this photo showing a NZ
military vehicle, asking it is a Morris and suggesting that the trailer
looks to be a Bren Gun Carrier chassis. --
Not a Morris, which would have been
British, but an American vehicle made in Canada to specific British requirements
for use by Commonwealth Armies; 850,000 made! This is a cca
1941 Chevrolet C15 CMP (Canadian
Military Pattern) with type 12 cab identified by having two-part

1951 Ford Custom Deluxe Convertible
One of number of interesting photos sent
to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is collector of old photos. Can we identify photo of a car in
Belgium in 1956?? -- Fuzzy
photo and not one immediately familiar to me, so was advised by our
Mark Dawber that it is American Ford. Flagship model car for the
period, this is a cca
1951 Ford Custom Deluxe Convertible.
It was one of the best US selling convertibles in 1951 with 40,000
sold. Top-of-the-line, it had a 100-HP flathead V-8.

1955 Oldsmobile Model 88
Another photo received from Charles
Dagenais (France)
saying" This time around I have this car to identify, please, from
video screen capture of the car in Montreal, fall of 1955, distant
neighbours, their name is uncertain. --
This is a car made by American car
company founded 1897 which had made over 14 million vehicles and closed
down as one of the oldest in the US in 2004 as part of GM. This is a
cca 1955 Oldsmobile Model 88.
Difficult to tell from the photo if Sedan or Coupe.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1966 GAZ Volga M21 Saloon
Father's day card received by one of our
members with caption "I have problems with emissions" says
dad; "... and the car keeps backfiring too! " Any
idea which car is depicted?? --
The car looks American and the name-badge
on the wing starts with a 'B' which would have helped had it actually
stood for a B rather than a 'V' and had it been American. Actually
built on the banks of the river Volga, Russia, it takes its name. Badge
helps in dating, making it the Mark 3
cca 1966 GAZ Volga M21.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Unidentified
Two-Stroke Motorcycle
Lovely big photo received from Andrew
Moore (UK) showing a group of
cars and motorcycles in front of a dealership. Can we help with any of
these?
-- The centre
motorcycle shown in this picture has beaten our experts. One comment
was " Possibly French Gnome et Rhone, small capacity model. They
had that shape tank." Another comment was "The
little two stroke is a puzzle - could be a Diamond but the name on the
tank doesn't seem like it could be that." " May have to
admit defeat."

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: We
still Need Help !
In 2006
we received a photo from Chris Strohmeyer,
California (USA)
of
a fiberglass special
with a 1940 Ford chassis and flathead V-8 engine.
-- Not in our period nor strictly
within our sphere of interest but we did put the photo on the Help Pages
in the hope that somebody knows something. We have now (2018) had
comment from Chris Morin saying "Isn't that a Devin?"
Our subsequent investigations suggest possibly not as most Devins had a
curved windscreen and faired lights??
