AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE

::
The SVVS Website currently receives
approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,
cars are in year order:

Photo received from Gillian Fynes (UK)
from the Oswestry Family & Local History Group saying she has a photograph
of a fire engine/cart that they are trying to put a date to so they can
research the fireman's lives. --
This is slightly outside our scope of
involvement but some diligent investigation suggests from the square cylinder
this is a cca 1890 Shand Mason Steam Fire Pump. Made in various forms
from 1870 to 1900s and used well up to/including WW2. Similar to
Merryweather.

A couple of photos received from Mohammed
Luqman from Dubai (UAE) saying
they have recently bought a big vintage Austin. Can we please help them
to identify this model? And can we help with spares needed as
they embark on the restoration project. --
Regret we cannot help with any spares as
we have no facilities for handling this. They could try the Vintage

looks like a "modified" cca

Oldsmobile Four Passenger Coupe
Fascinating photo from Matthew Aurand,
Pennsylvania (USA)
saying he is a volunteer for his local
historical society and they are trying to identify the make,
model and year for this vehicle. Can we help? --
No, but we knew somebody who could. Our
friends at the AACA put their thinking hats on and after a few false
starts did arrive at the correct answer, which proved it was not too
easy! This is cca

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1923 Wolseley
10hp Two-Seater
Birthday card received by our 'Morris Man'
Chas Moody from his friends Helen & Geoff. The card had been hand
made and had this picture on the front. Geoff recognised the rad but
not the car. Chas asked for our confirmation. --
Chas had nominated seven possibilities
and top of the list was a Wolseley. His first guess was indeed correct
as this is a cca
1923 Wolseley 10HP Two-Seater with Dickey.
Bulkhead sidelights suggest the year. By cca 1924, these were mounted
on the mudguards.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1923 Austin Seven AB Tourer
Grainy small photo received from David
Gilchrist of Glasgow (UK)
saying " I attach a photo of an unknown (to me at least) car taken
at my home somewhere in the period 1918 - 1923 near Glasgow,
Renfrewshire. I was hoping it was an Argyll, but can anyone identify it
please ? --
Registration GB is Glasgow CBC and likely late
1923/24. Regretfully the car was not made in Alexandria, Scotland but
in Longbridge, Birmingham. Not an Argyll. This is a
cca 1924 Austin Seven AB Tourer.

Cinema screen grab of a Vehicle which appeared in a
French film " Les amitiés particulières" (These Special
Friendships) made in 1964 where the vehicles are being investigated by
IMCDB. The film was about fifteen-year old boy and his relationship
with his teacher in a strict French Jesuit religious school. --
Very little of this interesting car is showing but that which is, the
winged emblem depicting a bird in flight, signposts us neatly at Avions
Voisin, Paris, cca
1923 Voisin C3L Saloon.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1926
Wolseley 16'35 Tourer
Rather gorgeous photo received from Llewelyn Morgan
(UK) who is a
Tutor in Classics at the 500-year-old Brasenose College, Oxford. Photo
from collection of Aurel Stein, Hungarian traveller and archaeologist
taken at Bamiyan, Afganistan, where the great Buddhas stood until the
Taliban destroyed them in 2001.-- The
definition of the car is rather poor but radiator is just recognisable.
Front brakes so post 1924 but no lights tie bar. This
looks much like a cca
1926 Wolseley 16'35 Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1928 Chrysler
72 Four Door Sedan
Photo received from Philip Tepper
(UK)
saying" The attached photo shows my grandfather alongside one of
his cherished vehicles, c1930 I'd think. I would be delighted if
someone could tell me what make and model it is? --
Glad to be able to help. Registration
BA 7073 is Salford County Borough Council and issued in late 1928. The
car is American having been manufactured in Detroit Michigan by a

Ford Model A Standard Phaeton
Photo received from Jesus Sosa,
Mexico City (Mexico)
saying his father bought this taxi many years ago from a beautiful town
Campeche in the south east. Unfortunately he died two years ago and was
not able to restore the car. Jesus now wants to get as near to the
original as possible. -- Triangular
body molding down forward of front door and external door handles say this
is a 1929
Ford Model A Standard Phaeton, which
has had some non original extra chromework added to.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1937
Cadillac Series 37-65 Sedan
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what this is?
-- Looks
to be a Diplomatic Vehicle from the CD plate. Another
American car from the General Motors Co., made in Michigan, named
after the French founder of Detroit, who took the title of Sire of
Cadillac, a village in France near Toulouse. This is a cca1937
Cadillac Series 37-65 Touring Sedan,

DATING:1949
Austin A40 Devon Saloon
Another photo received from our regular
contributor Raoul Rainer from Stutgart (Germany)
from a batch of photos he purchased recently and has on line. Must
mention that the kind chap has sent me a lovely big identification book
on German cars. Makes all my work worth while!! --This
is a British Austin, in Canada. A70 had spat covering rear wheel and
longer chrome strip. Picture shows curved bottom mudguard which
suggests A40. Has four doors, so , a cca
1949 Austin A40 Devon Saloon.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1953
Peugeot 203 Four Door Saloon
Photo received from our Singer Expert
Simon Bishop (UK)
saying he has been asked to identify this car which is thought to be a
Simca or perhaps a SAAB ? --
Regret both are wrong.
This is the rear view of a Peugeot 203 of which
some 770,000 were made 1949 to 1960. This has rear numberplate light
with see-through lenses which was used up to cca 1952. It also has a
flap over the petrol filler cap which came in cca 1953, which suggests
this is a cca
1953 Peugeot 203 Four Door Saloon.

DATING:1955
De Soto Firedome Grille on??
Intriguing photo received from Michelle
Overfelt (USA) part of a collection taken
by father who recently passed
away. Her son (his grandson) is making a scrapbook of the photos but cannot
ID this one. -- Not
enough! My researches
indicate that the grille and headlamp were used on the cca 1955 De Soto
FireDome and FireFlite but hood position/ shape is wrong. Our
friends at the AACA have suggested that this could be a De Soto
grille
on a custom Ford or a custom Mercedes.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:cca
1962 Kellyson J6 Panther
Brief email from Robert Pratt (USA)
simply saying "Can you identify this
vehicle? Thanks, Robert", and attaching this photo. --
Normally we ask for some background to the
photo but it looks an abandoned car in factory lot. Not British and we
had no ideas, - but our friends at the AACA, specifically Hanski from
Finland, advised this was a 1960s Kellyson J6. Jim Kellyson made many
hundreds of magnificent fibeglass bodied cars near Sacramento. 550 off
J6 bolted onto a Corvette chassis.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Unidentified
Side Entrance Tourer
One of a number of lovely photos received from
Tuttle Bunbury, Co Carlow (Eire) saying he
has a couple of cars he is seeking to identify the make and model of.
This could be a Rolls-Royce by the granite front door of his family
home in Ireland, with chauffeur out front, not sure what he's
wearing either!? -- Almost
impossible photo to identify as not much to see. Regret I don't think
it is a Rolls Royce by the shape. Relatively sure the chap in the fur
coat is the owner; chauffeur by door.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Unknown
pre-WW1 Two-Seater
An intriguing photo received from Jim
Taylor (Spain) who
is an English teacher in Barcelona, saying that during his family tree
research he came across an old photo of his great-great grandfather who
lived in Bury, Lancs. Jim would love to know which car it is and also
the approximate date.-- Regret
despite much head scratching amongst our experts no answer has been forthcoming.
Simply not enough showing to help. Date is going to be pre
WW1, cca 1913. Sunbeam is a possibility.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Unknown
cca 1919 Tourer
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what this is?
-- Quite
frankly, - no! This is another photo that has done the
rounds of our experts and nobody has come up with any positive
conclusions. General thought is that the car could be French but
the high mounted bonnet handles are very confusing. Normally
on round bonnet cars, which this may be not? |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Unknown
cca 1925 Large Vehicle
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what this is?
-- Regret
another no ! The two chaps draped over the car block out
most of the features, but even with clever air-brushing and
reverse cloning all we can deduce is that this is probably a
commercial or military vehicle, which has right hand drive, has no
front brakes, has robust build, probably of cca 1925. |
