The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission

IDENTIFICATION/DATING:   SVVS HELP PAGES EXCEED 2,000 Enquiries Received and Identified

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Possibly c1905 Speedwell
Lovely period photo received from Melanie Davis (UK) asking for help with identifying the make of vintage two seater. She likes it particularly as it seems to have the whole family around it. Believes the N registration plate locates it to Manchester? -- Yes, but not a vintage but a veteran car. Unusual and difficult to identify but our experts definitely think a French Lacoste et Battmann product sold under various 'badged' names. Shape of rad fins looks like the UK version cca 1905 Speedwell.

Possibly c1905 Speedwell

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906 Vauxhall 12'16 Tourer
Photo-of-photo from albums of John Hardy (UK) showing Grandfather Greaves marrying Grandma Dickson at Dudleston 1909. --  Registration  AP 2199 was East Sussex CC 1906. Bonnet flutes advise it is a Vauxhall. At this period had the 12/16 model and 18hp chain-driven model. So this is cca 1906 Vauxhall 12'16 Tourer. Company started as Alex Wilson 1857, became Vauxhall Ironworks in Wandsworth 1903, became Vauxhall Motors with move to Luton 1908, and General Motors in 1925.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907 Renault 20'30 Landaulette
Rather nice photo received from Charlotte Coulson (UK) on behalf of Robin Budenberg who is trying to identify this rather grand car for his father? -- The registration appears to be N 89 which was Manchester CBC and would have been issued 1904. The car is however a little later and likely reused a registration showing to be one of the earliest of motorists. The car is French, a rear opening Landaulette and being a big car,  it is most likely a cca 1907 Renault 20'30 Open Drive Landaulette

c1907 Renault 20'30 Landaultt

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1915 Hupmobile Model K Touring
Rather dark crinkly period photo received from Stewart Would (UK) of a touring car. What would we be able to tell him about BT 1903. -- Proved to be a difficult one to identify, eventually by Schacht of the AACA. Two things conspired ; the badge seems to have been used for that model and that year only and; the AA badge is hiding the tall radiator filler cap which would otherwise have led us to look at Hupmobile. From the split of windscreen it seems to be the cca 1915 Hupmobile Model K Touring.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1919 Ford Model T Depot Hack
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what the car is?  -- Obviously a cca 1919 Ford Model T Depot Hack. Ford made the chassis,  external companies made the bodies. Term comes from Depot (or Railway Station) and Hack (for Hackney or Taxi). Later terminology would be Station Wagon, and the vehicle would be used to transport passengers to their hotels.

One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. No date is known. -- Relatively unusual car made in Detroit by company founded by Hugh Chalmers buying into Thomas Detroit and renaming it Chalmers Detroit. Merged with Maxwell Automobiles 1922, ending all production in 1923.  This is a  cca 1920 Chalmers 35 Touring.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably 1923 Stoewer D5 Tourer
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this car is? -- Twin lights suggest a Teutonic origin car, or possibly Italian. Unfortunately the radiator is fitted with a stone guard which disguises rad. Suggestions of Austrian Puch or German Stoewer. Badge is large and possibly oval and badge bar between headlights,  both favour the cca 1923 Stoewer D5 Tourer.

Probably 1923 Stoewer D5 Tourer

Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what the car is?  -- Obviously this car had seen better days and no doubt got repaired, but is far from home so bits would have probably been difficult to source. 1931 Hotchkiss AM 80 Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1931 Renault Monasix RY2 Saloon
Cinema screen grab taken from a French comedy film "La folle histoire de Max et Leon" made in 2016 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. 1931 Plymouth PA Roadster

Unusual photo from Martin Beeton (Canada) sayng his aunt had a car that looked somewhat similar to a '38 MG or Hillman (or Humber)... but it isn't. 1934 Plymouth PE Sedan

One of the first to utilise the principle of less air resistance to improve efficiency. Made between 1934-37 this is a cca 1934 Chrysler Airflow Sedan.
