IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1906 Argyll 10'12 Tourer
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo taken
circa 1907. Is the car an Argyll? --
Yes indeed this is a car manufactured in
Scotland.
Argyll began manufacture in 1899 in Bridgeton,
Glasgow, as Hozier Engineering. By 1905 renamed Argyll Motors had
become the biggest car manufacturer in Scotland. After a move to new
factory in Alexandria went broke 1907. Reformed went on to 1932. From
few louvres looks like a cca
1906 Argyll 10'12 Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1908 Darracq 25'30 Landaulette
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo taken
circa 1907. Is the car a Darracq? --
I was not sure because although I had recently
seen a radiator that was something very similar, I could not find photo
in my records. Our Arierjan Bos advised that indeed it was a Darracq.
He suggested it was a
cca 1907/08 Darracq Landaulette, one
of larger models, possibly 25/30 HP model. Darracq went through early
period with myriads of rad shapes.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1908 Humber 10'12 Tourer
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo which
suggests it is a Humber being exhibited in a Polish Museum but no
information on the model. -- We
have had a number of veteran Humbers on our Help Pages throughout the
years so from features such as the winged mudguards, no louvers, oval
badge, short header gap where the badge is, and almost all sides of
inner rad frame of similar length; this is cca
1908 Humber 10'12 Tourer, unlikely
15HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1910 Renault AX Torpedo
Cinema screen grab taken from a 1970
American musical film "Darling Lili" being investigated by
IMCDB.
Film about WW1 British singer who is also a German Spy (Julie Andrews)
and air ace German uncle (Jeremy Kemp). -- Apears
in a number of scenes from different angles but is same car. Photos are all very dark
and pixly but we are relatively sure this is a cca
1910 Renault AX Torpedo. Although some
cars in period did have spares at back, this one has
a later post-WW1 war coacbuilt back.

Film about WW1 British singer who is also a German Spy (Julie Andrews)
and air ace German uncle (Jeremy Kemp). --
Film was shot in Brussels for Paris and in
Ireland at Weston Aerodrome. Released twice due directorial
disagreements; 'directors cut' 1991. Photos are all very dark
and pixly but we are relatively sure this is a Paris France made cca1910
De Dion Bouton CF Double Phaeton.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1912 Lohner-Porsche Petrol-electric
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify vehicle from 1913 Vienna? --
Only recognisable item is the wheel centre
which looks Lohner-Porsche. But Porsche left Lohner 1906 for Daimler.
Some commercials made after, internationally and for the Vienna Fire Brigade
and Post Office. So would seem to be a cca 1912 Lohner-Porsche
petrol-electric with engine driven generator, to electric motors in
wheelhubs.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914
Austro Daimler 14'32 Tourer
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify vehicle used by Austro-Hungarian Army
during the Great War. Austro Daimler? -- Austro
Daimler was a subsidiary of Daimler Germany run by Paul Daimler in 1902
and joined by Ferdinand Porsche in 1906. Racing was undertaken and
Porsche designed the Prinz Heinrich. This has long thin header
spitzkuhler so this is the cca
1914 Austro Daimler 14'32 Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1915 Opel 10'24 Dopple Phaeton
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify vehicle used by the Austro-Hungarian Army
during the Great War. Opel? -- Opel
produced racing and record breaking cars in the 1913'14s and was
Germanys largest car maker. During WW1 Opel was producing military
vehicles. In 1916 Opel introduced the 18'50 with spitzkuhler rad. So
flat rad, five louvres, has to be cca
1915 Opel 10'24 Dopple Phaeton Form F.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1919
Rochet Schneider Torpedo
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify vehicle taken in 1926 (maybe it's Austro
Daimler?). -- Not
an Austro-Daimler. While not a totally positive identification,
three of our experts agree French, and two think it is a cca
1919 Rochet Schneider, possibly the 30
HP. Similar to the A-D in having cantilever spring, it is different by
having angled rather than rounded bonnet top, and solid 6 stud wheels.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1922 Austin 20/4
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify this car. Not easy this one....any
ideas?" -- Not
an easy one at all but there are some positive pointers to look at.
Painted rad surround, no louvers, plain bonnet handle, and headlamp
with cable coming out the back. Wheelnut seems to have large letters,
just not discernable. All these can be found on a cca
1922 Austin 20/4, probably a
saloon, 3,610cc four, 1919 to 1929.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1925
Buick Master Six 49X Touring
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify vehicle believed to be a 1923 (Buick-?). -- Our
Mark Dawber thinks it is a cca
1925 Buick Master Six Model 49X, 7 passenger Touring,
built for export only. 128" wheelbase. 1924 cars used 32 x 4.5
tyres, 1925 cars used 32 x 5.77 or 6.00 x 22. Not 1926 as they had
headlight tie bar below the lights. 1924 cars don't seem to have the
shiny ring on back of headlight.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1925
Dodge Brothers 116 Touring
Very puzzling period photo sent to us by
Beres White (Australia) showing
his Great Grandfather, John Folkard and two of his sons. He lived in
Sydney. Appreciate any help to identify the car. -- Not
much to go on except the rear light, a hole in the apron near the back,
the sidelight, and blobby windscreen support. Needed help from our Mark
Dawber in NZ who eventually determined it is a cca
1924/5 Dodge Brothers 116 Touring.
Hard to be specific on the year with no car to see!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1926 Tilling Stevens B9 Bus
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID this convoy of West Yorkshire
buses. Third bus reg seems WU#. --
All busses on photo are likely made by
Tilling Stevens. Back ones difficult to make out. Reg is West
Riding of Yorkshire cca 1926 and the shape of radiator confirms it is
an earlier vehicle. This could be similar to the bus at the front of
the column and would likely be a cca
1926 Tilling Stevens B9 Single Decker.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1927 Tilling Stevens B9 Bus
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID this convoy of West Yorkshire
buses. Front is WW4254 --
Relatively sure all busses were made by
Tilling Stevens. Thomas Tilling was a horse bus operator in London 1850
who teamed up with WA Steverns 1911 to make petrol electric busses.
Registration suggests 1928 but shape of radiator unit suggests earlier,
possibly a cca
1927 Tilling Stevens B9 Single Decker.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1928 Leyland Lion PLSC1 Bus
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you help ID this Settle bus please? Reg is WW 5185.
--
Registration is West Riding of Yorkshire County Borough Cl c1928.
The radiator has the slight bell shape, has the crest badge and has the
ovalish logo on the header which would say, if visible, Leyland, Lion. Number
of Lions models made in period and this one looks short body so would
be the cca
1928 Leyland Lion PLSC1, speed
25mph.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1928 Tilling Stevens B10
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you help on convoy of West Yorkshire
buses. Second registration is WW4254 --
All busses likely Tilling Stevens. Tilling
Stevens made petrol electrics where petrol engine drives generator
driving electric motor on rear wheels. Registration is West Riding of
Yorkshire 1928 and shape of smaller radiator unit with smaller
nameplate suggests cca
1928 Tilling Stevens B10 Single Decker.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Possibly
c1928 Marshall Oil Tractor
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify this tractor?" --
Very difficult to tell an obscure tractor
from the back but we will try. There is an absence of height to the
machine and of any external large flywheel, which suggests it is not a
steam traction type of tractor. Large chimney suggests it is an Oil
Tractor and exponents of these were Marshall,
Sons & Co who made a version of
the Lanz single cylinder diesel two-stroke.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1928 Fordson Model F Tractor
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify this tractor?" --
We are relatively new to the
identification of vintage tractors so needed to do some background
digging. This one is helpful in having recognisable wheels but
unhelpful in having an ad drape completely covering the engine.
Notwithstanding, we think this is from Henry Ford, possibly from Cork
Ireland is a cca
1928 Fordson Model F Tractor,
1917-'28.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1930 Morris Oxford Six Saloon
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you help ID this car at Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire.
Registration is KR 2953.Kent c1929. --
Registration is indeed Kent, but 1930. The photo is quite grainy and
bit distorted but we are relatively sure from the angled bumper bars
that this is a cca
1930 Morris Oxford Six LA Saloon.
These were made 1929 to 1934, 1,938cc, in-line six rated 45 HP, and had
Budd all-steel body, later coachbuilt.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1932 Fordson Model N Tractor
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify this tractor?" --
We are relatively new to the
identification of vintage tractors so needed to do some background
digging. This one is difficult because of flat spiky wheels which determined were for cutting grass on golf courses with gang mowers.
Some were fitted with double pneumatic tyres for same reason. Cca1932
Fordson Model N, poss Cork but probably British made.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1936 Steyr 100 Kabriolet
Cinema screen grab taken from an 1985
Italo-German Film The Berlin Affair being investigated by IMCDB.
Film is about Nazi diplomat in love with the Japanese Ambassador's
daughter in 1938 Berlin. --
To make it more international, the car is
Austrian, made by 1915 OWG, weapons manufacturing company in Steyr,
Upper Austria; renamed 1926 Steyr-Werke. By this time and despite
Ledwinka and Ferdinand Porsche it had been bailed out by Austro
Daimler: cca
1936 Steyr 100 Kabriolet, 34HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1937
Polski Fiat 621 L Ambulance
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify vehicle taken in pre-WWII Poland. -- Looks
a FIAT, but as it is Poland, it is probably
cca 1937 Polski Fiat 621 L Ambulance
based on the 2.5-tonne truck, the
basic lorry of the Polish Army during the 1930s. Serial production
started in 1935 at the Państwowe Zakłady Inżynierii
(including Ursus) and lasted until 1939, the German invasion
of Poland.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1937 Goliath FW200 Dreirad
Cinema screen grab taken from an 2015
German Film "Kleine Grosse Stimme" (Little Big Voice) being investigated by
IMCDB.
Film about boy with golden throat and dark skin, who is exploited by
racist grand parents, and who runs away to auditions at the Vienna Boys
Choir. --
Three wheelers were quite popular in
Europe in the 1930s. This one was built in Bremen Germany by Goliath-Werke
Borgward & Co., and has the grille at the front so has water cooled
engine; cca
1937 Goliath FW200.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Unknown
c1930 Animal Transporter
Another very puzzling
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify this Animal Transporter which has no
visible registration plate?" --
Very frustrating because the logo on the
radiator is almost discernable but not quite. We are not specialists on
commercial vehicles so we
would appreciate any help on
identifying this vehicle which we are relatively sure is British. The
logo seems to be in a triangular hollow high up on the header tank.
