The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

Cinema screen grab taken from a British TV Series
"Citadel" made 1983 where cars are being investigated by
IMCDB. Story of young idealistic doctor who tries to improve health in
1930s Welsh mining town but gets side-tracked by his ambitions. Some
scenes shot abroad? -- Bits of a vehicle in a
dark surrounding which had to be put/stitched together to make sense
and which produced a very unexpected result. This is a very unusual cca

"Citadel" made 1983 where cars are being investigated by
IMCDB. Story of young idealistic doctor who tries to improve health in
1930s Welsh mining town but gets side-tracked by his ambitions. Some
scenes shot abroad? -- Very dark photo and also
not much of the car can be seen, but the bits that appear to be
recognisable very much suggest this was a high quality British vehicle,
being a cca

"Citadel" made 1983 where cars are being investigated by
IMCDB. Story of young idealistic doctor who tries to improve health in
1930s Welsh mining town but gets side-tracked by his ambitions. Some
scenes shot abroad? -- Wales is not normally a
place you would expect to see an American c1928
International 1 Ton Dropside Truck,
supposed in the 1930s but with a 7845 PP suffix registration which did
not come in force until the 1960s.

Very dark photo and Wales is not normally a place you would expect to
see a high performance car designed by Ferdinand Porsche and made in
Vienna Austria, being a cca

Dawber (New Zealand).
- - Car from a company Zürcher & Lüthi started in Neuchatel in
Switzerland in 1897 manufacturing motorcycle engines. Production moved
1905 to the French side of the border to avoid taxes. Smallish car,
with horisontal bars, has a London registration, shape suggesting cca

SCAT 25'35 Targa Florio
Another interesting photo received from our Forums Sleuth, Mark
Dawber (New Zealand),askinf for make of
vehicle in Walsh mountains? -- The car is
obviously a SCAT (Società Ceirano Automobili Torino), and the
registration is Manchester CBC. The connection is probably that Newton
Bennett of Manchester were SCAT Representatives in UK. Cyril Snipe was
a nephew who worked in Turin for SCAT as Test Driver and won the 1912
965km Giro di Sicilia in a 1912
SCAT 25'35 Targa Florio.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1931 D8S Delage Coupe
Another grainy but puzzling photo received
from Georges Truffaut (Belgium)
of a vehicle he is trying to identify. Believed photographed in France;
Delage? -- French Delage indeed, just
before the end in 1935 and before the Delahey takeover. Seems from the
D8S range as has the D8 roundel in centre on the headlamp bar. Unusual
angled louvers suggest only the 1931 year, and the bodywork could be a
Limousine or Coupe, so we think a cca
1931 Delage D8S Coupe. Later, 1954
Hotckis.

Another lovely photo received from our Forums Sleuth, Mark
Dawber (New Zealand), from a forum of old
photos asking for information on the make of vehicle photographed in
Australian outback? Is it a 1910/12 Alfa 24HP? --
ALFA's first car was the 24HP made 1910-1921. We however think from
upright open steering wheel that it is
their smaller racing model made from 1910 to 1911, a c1911
ALFA 12HP Corsa Torpedo with
four-cylinder engine of 2413cc. SEE

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914
Daimler 38HP Tourer
Another photo received from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) asking for information on make of vehicle, --
Dating vehicles around World War One time is difficult if the
registration number is not visible, as in this case. The car can either
be from just before the war (13/14), or immediate carry-over just
after the war (19'20), so a seven year gap where not much happened in
visual development. This is a big car with lipped mudguards so probably
a cca 1914 Daimler 38 Tourer.

Ford Model T Special
Cinema screen grab taken from an American "When Love Took
Wings" made in 1915 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB.
Story of three men in love with the same woman, until one of them takes her on an airplane in an
attempt to elope. -- This is a
relatively difficult one because car has all the signs of a rounded
bonnet transverse sprung
rounded radiatored post 1916 Ford
Model T, but film is advised
as been made in 1915 - so either earlier pre-1915 Fprd T Special or
later film?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909
Peugeot Type 105 Sports Tourer
Another photo received from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand), f asking for information of the make of vehicle? --
Confirmed by Ariejan Bos as Peugeot. Big models pre-1910 had chain
drive. This is a Peugeot type 105 6 cylinder produced in 1908/9.
Registration plate ending with X5 was issued end of 1909, so this must
have been one of the last of series. The body is interesting and seems
indebted to the American toy tonneau body, low built and ending just
above rear axle.
