1902 Lux 5HP Voiturette
On our Help
Page 98 we are showing an UNIDENTIFIED
turn-of-century two seater with very pointed front received from
Ken Brown, Hampshire (UK)
'always a pleasure looking through the Help Pages.' -- We
have been contacted by Fedor from Romania advising that this is a cca
1902 Lux 5ps Voiturette. We
know of Lux as a manufacturer in Germany of electric and petrol cars
but not of this type of model. We have requested further background
from Fedor, but no replies as yet.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1904 Darracq 8HP Roadster
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo taken circa 1905 near where
Auckland Airport is now. Taken while building a bridge over a creek. Is
the car a Darracq? --
Radiator is similar to a Panhard Levassor
so double checked with our very-oldies expert Ariejan Bos who confirmed
this is a French Car made in Suresnes Paris, cca
1904 Darracq 8HP Roadster. Not enough
of rear-entrance tonneau behind it to be seen, to be able to make an
identification.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907
Ford Model R Runabout
Another puzzling photo received from Tom
Cosens from Yorkshire (UK)
of an old car he didn't recognise. This is from his collection of
postcard curiosities on which he has no other background, but which are
needing ID. -- Seems
to have no dumbirons so transverse front spring; so immediately think
of one of Henry's earlier creations. And indeed yes, running boards
connect to mudguards so this is a cca
1907 Ford Model R Runabout. Front
engined four cylinder 15HP 2.4 litre, 2500 built to1909.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909
International Harvester
Another interesting photograph well worth
sharing on our Help Pages as a vehicle identification aid to auto
historians, found while surfing the web researching unknown machinery.
Can we name make? -- We
think the photo originates from New Zealand and shows a 'high wheeler'
crossing some quite impressive mountains. The vehicle was made in
America by company who were making automated crop reapers in 1831.
Rounded bonnet suggests a cca
1908'9 International Harvester.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1912 Zenith Gradua Sidecar Outfit
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo and suggested the
motorcycle is a Zenith Gradua. --
New one to me. Digging found this is a
British make from London, Finsbury. Famous for racing and for the
Gradua having a revolutionary variable drive ratio transmission via
adjustable pulley operated by a coffe-grinder handle on the tank which
got them banned from competitions, so put 'banned' on the badge: cca
1912 Zenith Gradua 770 Twin & Chair.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Lacre Type O Flatbed Lorry
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify this gas powered Wagon with DK plate....Rochdale
335. -- Indeed
Rochdale CBC registration early 1913, and we have had this vehicle
before (see
HP 119). The lorry on the left of the
main photo is a
cca
1913 Lacre Type O Flatbed Lorry, made
in Long Acre, Covent Garden, London; this is powered by coal gas in big
bag on roof due to petrol shortages in WW1.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1915
Overland Delivery Van
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify this gas powered Wagon; AK plate
Bradford 4286?" -- Indeed
Bradford CBC registration, but no accurate dating available. The van on
main photo right was made in America. The shape of the radiator changed
to this type in c1914 and lost the bottom corners in c1916. So
this would be a cca
1915 Overland Delivery Van possibly
bodied in the UK and running on coal gas in WW1.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1924 Fageol Safety Coach
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) has noted that we have had quite a few UK busses on our
Help Pages recently and thought that the unique recognition feature on
this bus in New Zealand would be worth noting.
-- There
is a row of scoop type vents in the centre top of bonnet, American
manufacturer from California, founded 1916 building cars, then
tractors, then safety coaches, number operated by South Australian
Railways, including as railcars; cca1924
Fageol Safety Coach.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1926
Tilling Stevens B9 Single Decker
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you possibly identify and give any more information about
this bus...WU 8509 plate?" -- WU
8509 is a West Riding of Yorkshire issue from 1926. A lovely wintery
snow scene which hides the bus well! However, from what we can make out
this is a
cca 1926 Tilling Stevens B9 Single Deck Bus,
which would have been made in Maidstone Kent by company that
specialised in petrol-electric buses.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1926 Leyland Lion PLSC1 Bus
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you possibly identify and give any more information about
this bus...CK 35767(?) plate?" -- Plate
is very fuzzy but CK 3576 would have been a Preston County Borough
Council issue cca 1926. Despite
unclear photo we we are relatively sure this Bus was made in the town
of Leyland near Preston in Lancashire, being a cca 1926 Leyland Lion PLSC1 Bus,
fitted with probably
Leyland's own body.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927
Morris Oxford 13.9 Saloon
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you possibly identify
this car in Ross on Wye. Plate is VJ 538...Herefordshire?" -- Numberplate
is indeed Hereford County Council issue of late 1927. We have a similar
car on this page slightly later> This is a cca
1927 Morris Oxford 13.9 Flat-nose Saloon,
introduced 1926 following the Bull-nose. Engine was increased to
1,802cc,13.9HP, standard front brakes, and had all-steel Budd body.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1929
Guy Twenty Seater Coach
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you possibly identify this bus. Plate is I
think WW 3195 I think. Photo is at Kettlewell with Skipton destination
board. I think it says Pendle Bus down the side?" -- Numberplate
is obscured but WW 9195 would have been West Riding
of Yorkshire CBC issue from 1929. Fuzzy photo but we are relatively sure this
bus was made in Wolverhampton and was a cca
1929 Guy OND 19 Seater Coach.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927
Morgan Aero Three-wheeler
Period photo sent in to Rootschat by Scobie
(UK) asking if anybody can help
date this photo? Identifying these vehicles is
the best chance of pinning a date to this picture." --
TN 3081 was Newcastle County Borough
Council registration issued cca 1927. Suggested a Morris but car has
too few wheels to be a Morris even though it has a bullnose type rad.
This is a tree-wheeler from Malvern, being a cca
1927 Morgan Aero. The bumper and mud
flap are covering the precise make of the engine.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928
Fiat 509A Spider
Period photo sent in to Rootschat by Scobie
(UK) asking if anybody can help
date this photo? Identifying these vehicles is
the best chance of pinning a date to this picture." -- KP
3319 was a Kent County Council registration issued late 1928, and from
the external magneto housing seen at the base of the radiator it would
seem to be a cca
1928 Fiat 509. From the angle of the
photo it is a little difficult to say if it is the 509A Tourer
(Torpedo) or two-seater (Spider). 90,000 sold between 1924-29.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928
Citroen B14G Four Door Saloon
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify the car on the photo with FR 7783
registration?" -- Registration
is Blackpool CBC 1928. The car is French and from just a few louvres at
rear of bonnet we can surmise this is a cca
1928 Citroen B14G Conduite Interieure Four Door Saloon.
Citroen had Gear Factory in UK in 1919, agents Gaston Ltd, but had few
years earlier in 1926 opened assembly facility in Slough,
Bucks.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928
Albion PM28 Viking Half-cab Bus
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you possibly identify and give any more information about
this bus...CP 6767 plate?" -- CP
6767 is a Halifax CBC issue from
1928. Bus was made in Glasgow Scotland by a company earlier better
known for its car manufacturing. In 1909 they changed to commercials
and made trucks for WW1. This is a cca
1928 Albion PM28 Viking Half-cab Bus.
Became Layland Motors 1951, name dropped 1980.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928
Leyland Titan TD 1 Double Decker
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you possibly identify and give any more information about
this bus...WW 6797 plate?" -- WW
6797 is a West Riding of Yorkshire issue from
1928. The manufacturer started as Lancashire Steam Motor Company in
1896 in Leyland in Lancashire making steam lawn mowers. Became Leyland
Motors 1907 making cars, lorries and busses. This is a cca
1928 Leyland Titan TD 1 Double Decker.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1929
Leyland Q Type 4 Ton Lorry
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you possibly give any more information about the Leyland
lorry...WW plate, and maybe even a steam crane?" -- WW
8741 is a West Riding of Yorkshire issue from early 1929. The lorry is
indeed a Leyland and from the double row of louvres it would be a cca
1929 Leyland Q Type 4 Ton Lorry. The
crane could be a Rail Mobile 3 Ton Steam Crane made by Henry J Coles of
Derby since 1879 to 1998.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1930
Morris Oxford Six LA Saloon
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify the car on the photo with KR 2953 registration?" -- Registration
is Kent County Council issue of 1929. The car is British by a bicycle
manufacturing company starting making cars in the old 'Oxford Military
College' in 1913 and producing 42% of British cars by 1926. This is top
of range cca
1930 Morris Oxford Six Saloon with 'Dodge-alike' Budd body and 1939cc 6 cylinder engine.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1933
GAZ Model A Touring
Another lovely photo received from our
regular contributor Andrew Kostin, Moscow (Russia)
saying" Here is a photo taken in summer 1934. Could you please ID
this vehicle?" -- We
are assuming from the hat badges that this photo was taken in Russia.
We are also relatively sure this car is an American Ford Model A car
which had just started being manufactured in Russia at Nizhny Novgorod
in 1933 as the 1933
GAZ Model A Touring, initially by NAZ,
then Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1947
Bedford OB Coach
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you possibly identify this bus...FWX 550 registration?"
-- FWX
550 is a West Riding of Yorkshire issue from
about February 1947. The bus was made by a company started in 1857
making marine engines, and later cars in 1903 in Vauxhall London, and
purchased by General Motors in 1925. Early Trucks by 1930 were based on
the Chevrolet, this is a
cca 1947 Bedford OB Coach with Beadle

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1956
Pontiac Star Chief Sedan
Couple
of interesting photos received from Ruddy Sommereyns (Belgium)
showing three cars from from the fifties from the town where he
lives (Temse -Belgium). Can we identify these please ? -- American,
and from the back so needed a bit of help from our Mark Dawber who
suggested a Pontiac but possibly Canadian or American. Further
investigation suggests that the chrome stars on the boot would make it
an American cca
1956 Pontiac Star Chief Four Door Hardtop Sedan.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1956 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe
Couple
of interesting photos received from Ruddy Sommereyns (Belgium)
showing three cars from from the fifties from the town where he
lives (Temse -Belgium). Can we identify these please ? -- Difficult
and small, angle from the back. This one was designed in Italy on the
German Beetle chassis made by Volkswagen and coachwork made by the
German coachwork company Karmann. Small rear lights suggest this is
Series 1 cca 1956 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia
14 Coupe, 1955-59.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1957
Borgward Isabella
Couple of interesting photos received from
Ruddy Sommereyns (Belgium)
showing three cars from from the fifties from the town where he
lives (Temse -Belgium). Can we identify these please ? -- This
one was manufactured in Bremen in Germany. It has a couple of
identification features such as the vent holes below the rad and no
flashing indicators on the wings which helps to date it as a cca
1957 Borgward Isabella. Angle makes
slightly hard to tell if Coupe or Saloon.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Unknown c1913
Two_Seater
Another very puzzling
period photo sent to us by Richard Perrin (UK)
"I came across this pic of a car belonging to another Gt Uncle.
Only pic I have and not much to go on. It looks as though he had a
chauffer." -- Two
seater so chauffeur from front car? Almost
impossible angle so none of our experts have been able to provide
identification. Tall car with a high pointed bonnet. Perhaps a Belsize,
Phoenix or Humber but rear springs not right. Worcester County Council
Registration late
1913.
