:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1901 MMC Motor Bus
Slightly damaged period photo received from Steve Manns (UK) saying he would very much appreciate it if one of our experts could name the vehicle in this photo. -  A couple of our experts agree this could be a cca 1901 MMC Motor Bus. A photo of an almost identical motor bus is shown in a 1901 copy of the The Motor Car Journal, in Balham. Motor Manufacturing Co of Coventry formed 1898 made high wheeler cars, and motor waggonettes and chars-a-bancs. Went into liquidation 1904.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1903 Georges Richard RE Tonneau
Intriguing bunch of photos of the same car received from Eugenie Roux from Cornwall  (UK) driven by Albert Roux (not the chef!) in Normandy, France circa 1910. " (I'm a bit worried about the chap lying in the road in front of the car!)".  -- Advised by our veterans expert Ariejan Bos that this car is a 1903 Georges Richard 12Hp. The identification features are the straight dumb irons with the short curve at the end and also the offset crank handle.  Became Richard Brasier.  Left to form Unic 1905.

1902 Georges Richard Rear-Entrance Tonneau

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904 De Dion Bouton 8HP Populaire
Lovely period photo, a bit damaged, received from June Cobley (UK) with everyone posed around a car, including grandmother and her parents. The car is K3904 believed registered in Liverpool although the family probably lived in Penrith. -- We repaired photo, indeed Liverpool CBC, but no dating data available. The Car has been confirmed as a Paris made cca 1904 De Dion Bouton 8HP Populaire Biplace (two-seater).  De Dion Bouton was at time the world's largest automobile manufacturer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1908 Deasy 25 Tourer
Very unusual photo received from Geoff Clark of Farnham (UK) who states he is very impressed with your website and wondered if we could identify car owned by wife's great grandfather from Elstead Surrey. -- Unusual bonnet and radiator, limiting number of manufactures. From the bonnet and radiator this looks  like a 1907 Deasy, but without front transverse spring? Our Ariejan Bos advises 1908 Deasy 25 model when they had apparently abandoned the transverse front spring for normal.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1909 Cadillac Model 30 Demi-Tonneau
Photo posted on AACA website by Scottm (USA) saying photo probably taken in Indiana. Any idea what the car is?  --  My thought from the rear wheel hub and relatively pointed radiator was that it was a Cadillac. Contacted our Dutch veteran expert Ariejan Bos  who also suggests Cadillac but pinpoints it to a 1909 Cadillac. He said it looks too short for a touring car, so more like a Toy Tonneau (Demi-Tonneau). This would make it a four cylinder cca 1909 Cadillac Model 30 Demi-Tonneau, $1.4k.

One of a number of high quality interesting photos sent to us by Mike Mackrill (UK) with website called Nostalgic Picture Library. Building in background could be that owned by Cheverton, garage owner at Newport. "
-- No registration visible to aid dating. From the distinctive wheel hubs,  this is a lovely photo of a cca 1911 Humber 28 HP Tourer.

Photos received in 2007 from Kevin Mikesell from Illinois (USA) trying to identify the car in this picture with his Great Aunt and Uncle. He assumes the picture was taken around 1925 in Michigan. --  Picture was  fuzzy and we  had enhanced it, but at that time it remained unknown. It remained so for 10 years! However we have now been advised by Varun Coutinho that he thinks it is a cca1922 Oakland Sensible Six Model 6-44 5-Passenger Touring. Made in Pontiac, Michigan, & became GM in 1909.

What is it, and what are contraptions attached to the wheels? --  The rather nice vehicle is a cca 1923 Ford Model TT chassis with a local bus body. Gizmos on wheels are mud flaps to prevent car wheels splashing sideways at horses, at other cars and people on sidewalk.  Solid or broom types invented and used.

--Examination of details such as louvers, mudguards, step etc confirms it is not the same car. However in his searches, one of the owners was a Mike Erroll of Godstone. Small world. Mike was a friend and Chairman of this Society for many years.  He sadly died only a couple of years ago.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Probably c1932 NAZ/GAZ Model A
Another very interesting photograph sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos.  Photo was taken in the USSR, in the Soviet city of Gorky.  --  Looks American but with a star logo? We are not specialists in Soviet cars but we think this is one of the early 1932 NAZ-A, later 1933+ GAZ-A, cars made in
Nizhny Novgorod using cca 1930 Ford Model A parts initially from the USA. Petrol filler cap was on the scuttle and radiator top was not scalloped like the US 'A'.

Couple of lovely period photo received from Jonas Nilsson (USA) saying they have relocated from England to Westport Connecticut to an old house which comes with some car history. Can we identify two pictures assumed of the same car. --  Not the same car. This one is home grown in Detroit. The main helpful identification feature is the logo on the front wheel which two of our experts have rightly identified as V8. It also has a handle on the front of the bonnet so is a cca 1934 Ford V8 40.

Our NZ Contributor Mark Dawber suggests New Guinea and the car could be from Australia?? That floating dock should be a clue. Bikes look odd. The car closest looks a 1955 Dodge Kingsway V8. Number of current photos received from Pino Lombardi (UK) trying to identify the make and year of this four cylinder engined rolling chassis; chain drive, three quarter elliptics, straight front axle,  wire wheels, RH drive, transmission brake and no front brakes and two foot pedals.  --  Our experts  believe these parts do not belong together but have been assembled for many years from the evidence of the rust 'patina' and corrosion.  Unlikely it ever left a car maker's factory as we see it now !

Unidentified cca 1909 Chassis

What throws me is a small one foot square door or opening behind the passenger door area."   --  This is a cca 1925'9 'Golfer's Roadster/Coupe' and the small square door is for stowing away golf clubs. Not a Ford. Possibly a Lincoln but many other makes had the feature including Cadillac, Hupmobile, Willys, Marmon...
