AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

Pipe 50HP Tourer
Photo received from Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos with unidentified make of
vehicle. Argyll? - - Reg is London CC 1908. The
rad cap is obscured. Argyll had square corners to the radiator matrix,
whereas Talbot were rounded? Talbot also curved axle. Ariejan Bos
advises these are Belgian cars,
cca 1906 Pipe
Tourers, probably the
50HP, similar as on the Critérium Internationale reliability trial
through Benelux/Germany in 1906. Pipe
made big cars 1900-23.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1906 Ford Model N Runabout
Another lovely puzzling photo from a forum of car photos asking
for information on the make of vehicle not yet identified. --
At first glance looks like a stripped down Ford Model T but the
radiator is wrong size and shape and it has a transverse front spring
on a solid axle. It is actually one of the T's earlier predecessors, a cca
1906 Ford Model N Runabout with a 15HP
2,440cc 4-cylinder engine. The N was the maroon entry level car, 7,000
made to 1908, with R and S having better trim.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1906 Argyll 14'16 Tourer
Another photo received from our Forums Sleuth, Mark Dawber
(New Zealand), from a forum of old photos
with 'Anti-Motoring' postcards featuring the company owner's Argyll
automobile, but which model? - - Car registration
is CX 318 which was Huddersfield CBC, but no dating data available. It
however has a small ovalish badge on the rad which limits it to
1905-1908 and forward tie rod. Mudguard not lipped so probably a cca
1906 Argyll 14'16 Tourer or perhaps
the smaller 12'14.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1906 Star Swing-seat Tonneau
Another interesting photo received from our Forums Sleuth, Mark
Dawber (New Zealand), asking for info on
the make, -- First thought Humber or Belsize. Our
Ariejan Bos however advises it is a British cca
1906 10hp Star Swing-seat Tonneau made
in Wolverhampton by company started in bicycles in 1870s. The front
swing-seat swings oit of way to allow passengers to enter the rear
compartment rather than having a door in the centre rear. Normally
car would have side chains,

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1907 Delaunay Belleville 40HP
Another puzzling photo from a forum of car
photos asking for info on vehicle suggested as a very rare 1913
Delaunay-Belleville O6 45/50, dual rear tires and headlights.
- - The photo may be c1913 but the car is probably some six year
younger. The bonnet extends to the windscreen without any scuttle, the
bonnet is multi-corrugated, the vehicle is chain drive and has dished
rear wheel. If the biggest at time, then cca
1907
Delaunay Belleville 40HP
four, or possibly slightly smaller 24HP Four.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1908 Clement Talbot Landaulette
Another puzzling photo from an old car forum asking for
information on car being driven by Great Grandfather? Suggested as a
Knox? -- Two of our experts agree this is a
British car as Knox had curved top rad and bolt-on wheels. This has a
hump on rad and is a smallish car, a
cca 1908 Clement Talbot Landaulette,
probably 12HP. Complicated company history at the time; originally
French, the London end of Clement became Clement Talbot from 1904,
based in Kensington, later Talbot.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1912 Rollo Tandem Two-Seater
Another puzzling photo from a forum of car photos asking for
info on the make of vehicle not yet identified. --
This is a vehicle from the 'cyclecar era'
using bicycle tubular technology and wheels, powered by a motorcycle
engine. A number of makers of monocar or a tandem, including better
known French Bedelia. This is a British version made by the Rollo
Car Company of Birmingham which had a
8HP JAP engine and belt drive to rear wheels. Driver sat and steered
from the back seat.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1913 Swift 15HP Tourer
Three interesting photos sent to us for identification
originating from an old car website where they have not been identified
so far. -- Carries a British Registration LH 4414
was mid year 1913 issued by London County Council. Car has Pre World
War One bodywork with humpy scuttle with a petrol filler cap in the
front below the centre of the windscreen. Just visible cloverleaf logo

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Darracq Torpedo Tourer
Another puzzling photo from Rootschat
forum of Great Grandfather's car where the the make of vehicle has not
yet been identified. -- There was no
mention of the make or the year of the car. There is no registration
visible to help in dating or location origin. The car is French, from a
company with British management. The revamped radiator shape is new for
the post 1912 period, and has the new badge. This seems a
cca 1913
Darracq Torpedo Tourer, probably the V14 16HP car.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1914 Bozier Landaulette
Another puzzling photo from a forum of old cars where the make
of vehicle has not yet been identified. --Pretty
little car with 'bullnose' type rad which at first suggested as a
French Unic, but other features did not fit. Our Ariejan Bos advises
this is another French car from Puteaux , Paris, a cca
1914 Bozier Landaulette Taxi. Smallish
car with a longish bonnet so likely the medium 14'18HP. Started 1901
using De Dion engines, own engines 1908, sold in UK, but did not
survive WW1.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914
De Dion Bouton 35 Landaulette
Three interesting photos sent to us for identification
originating from an old car website where they have not been identified
so far. - - Smooth scuttle but lipped mudguards
and unusual body like a Tourer but is a pre World War One Open
Drive Convertible Landaulette where the whole of the rear body folds
down into a touring car. Landaulette parts can be seen as tops of
doors. Itv is a Fench car from Paris, a c1914
De Dion Bouton 35HP Convertible Landaulette,
probably using a V8 engine.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1914 Ford Model T Touring
Another puzzling photo from an old car forum asking for
information on the make of vehicle being driven by family in India? -
- Transverse springs back and front which points to a model T Ford.
Radiator is angular rather than rounded which confirms a pre-1916. No
pre-formed scuttle so pre 1915, and has smaller rounded driver's door
in a body that goes round below the windscreen, deep skirt which
forward folding windscreen. This is therefore an early cca
1914 Ford Model T Touring.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1915 Ford Model T Special
Another puzzling photo from a forum of car photos asking for
information on the make of vehicle not yet identified. --
Looks a crude home-made special on an American Ford Model T chassis.
Recognisable as Ford
T from transverse front/rear springs,,
and from having a dished Ford T steering wheel reversed to hang down.
Dating, - pre 1916, as remnants of square edged rad just visible below
rad cap. Non-standard wire wheels and gas tank moved to scuttle. not
available until 1926.

1920 Ford Model TT Lorry
Another interesting photo received from Janet Durbin investigating the
history of NT Polesden Lacey in Surrey. -- We know Polesden well as we
have been there a few times as club, once p re-enacting a weekend
break. - - No registration visible to aid investigation. No visible
dumbirons back and front so transverse springs, rounded bonnet, so
advising Ford T post 1916. Stabiliser rods to rear wheels suggest TT
Lorry. Latest solid rear tyres 1918-23. So cca 1920 Ford Model TT
Lorry.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1923 Crossley 14 Tourer
Another interesting photo sent to us for identification
originating from an old car website where not identified so far. -
- British, earlier flat radiator, gap between doors, says 4/5 Seat
Tourer. Range in 1922 called 12'14, in 1923 renamed 14, and in 1925
became 15'30, all to do with maker's HP, national HP and RAC HP. Actual
HP was 15.6 from four cylinder engine 2388cc. Made to 1927. From
windscreen and shorter top of bonnet this suggests probably a cca
1923 Crossley 14 HP Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1923
Packard Six Limousine
Puzzling photos received from Len Huff (UK)
researching the English auto coach-builder E.D. Abbott Ltd preceded by
Page & Hunt Ltd and is writing the company's history. Photo shows
two cars advised to him as Delage 1924. Can we confirm? -
- Ignoring bodies, pictures do not fit Delage pictures in my collection
nor with any on internet, as there are definite creases in the bonnet
a-la Buick/Packard etc. Various ID pointers say this a cca 1923 Packard
Six Saloon. READ MORE HISTORY

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1924 Dodge Half Ton Truck
Another puzzling photo from a forum of car photos asking for
info on the make of vehicle not identified. --
Dated on front 1921 which would mean the vehicle is 1921 or earlier.
The radiator and high mounted headlamps suggest Dodge
Brothers. The
'pick-up 'style soft-top version vehicles were introduced by Doge
Brothers in 1918 specifically for the American Army when 1,100 were
send to France for World War 1 use 'Light Repair Vehicles'. None
privately until 1924. READ

Daimler 25'85 Limousine
Another interesting photo received from Janet Durbin investigating the
history of NT Polesden Lacey in Surrey. -- We know Polesden well as we
have been there a few times as club, once assisting a local amateur
dramatics group re-enacting a weekend break. The registration YU 8568
in a London County Council Issue of late 1927. Grainy photo from low
shooting angle distorts perspective of a long bonnet, so probably a
cca
1927 Daimler 25'85 Limousine or Landaulette or
perhaps a 35'120.

Romeo logo on the radiator. The big oval air inlets round the radiator
indicate a 'Monza' style radiator fitted to a number of models, this is
probably the famous short chassis cca

tapered racing tail and exhaust.

Waterfall grille so the body is indeed of a British Sports car and

and body by Mulliners.
