::
The SVVS Website currently receives
approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,
cars are in year order:

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1899
De Dion Bouton Quadricycle
Puzzling photo received from Sam Dickinson
(UK) of
ancestors Charles and Beatrix Field, of Brighton, notated '1899' and
'Orient Express'. --
Orient Express was a German company making Benz-like cars, which this
is not. Did not make quads. US company Waltham sold 'Orient' quads in
1898 which were imported De Dion Bouton from France. In 1902 made their
own 'Orient Autogo' quad. Possibly via US but we are relatively sure
this is a French cca

Parisienne Victoria Combination
Another photo from the Exeter Memories
website (UK) showing
a car defined as a De Dion. -- This
picture is shown on a couple of pages and is described as a 1903 De
Dion. Registration is Exeter CBC, but 1904, - and the vehicle is not a
De Dion Bouton. This was built by the French Company Societe Parisienne
which initially made bicycles from 1976 and light car construction
in 1898-1901. This is a cca
1900 Parisienne Victoria Combination,
people in a Caleche. 2.5 De Dion or Aster engines.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1909
Buick Model 10 Toy Tonneau
Another interesting photo received from
Eileen Stokes (UK). Eileen has no
information or link with the photo except that
she knows it was almost certainly taken in USA and is a postcard
curiosity requiring identification. --
Registration plate covers the header tank
but our Mark Dawber advises this is a Michigan built cca
1909 Buick Model 10 Toy Tonneau, made
at the time that Billy Durant was setting up General Motors with Buick
as the base. Flags say Middleton & Sun Prairie match?

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1911 Stanley Steamer
Model 63
Photo of unusual car for UK received from
Benjamin Oldcorn (UK) saying
he works for the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum in Cornwall. Can we
identify car outside the old building. --
Porthcurno was where all under-sea cables
came to UK from all over the world. Registration
advises that the car was registered with Cornwalll County Council in
early 1911. Our friend Jim Merrick at the Stanley Museum in Maine advises this is a
cca 1911 Stanley Steamer
Model 63 10 HP Touring Car.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1911 Renault AX 8HP
Two-Seater
Another photo from the Exeter Memories
website (UK) showing
an unknown car belonging to a Percy Tucker pulling an ambulance trailer
used to carry wounded soldiers from Queen Street Station to one of five
VA Military hospitals in the city.
-- This seems to be an earlier car owned by
Mr Tucker but photographed at about the same time in 1916 when the
Tailby trailers were obtained by the newly formed Ambulance Sevice
Corps. The car is a French cca
1911 Renault AX 8HP Two-Seater.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1913
Sperber F4 6'20 Doppelphaeton
Another lovely photo received from Juha
Kaitanen (Finland) saying
it looks like a NSU but not quite? --
Logo actually says NAW not NSU.
Norddeutshe Automobil Werke in Hamlen in North Saxony, Germany made two
cars for which they were known: Colibri cca 1908 and then the Sperber
cca 1911. First Sperber cars had Sperber on the rad but in 1913 built
two new models with NAW logo. This is a cca
1913 Sperber F4 6'20 Doppelphaeton.
Town is famous for the ' Pied Piper of Hamelin ' legend.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1913
Stutz Bearcat Series E Roadster
Another photo from Jim Derham-Reid from
British Columbia (Canada)
showing a car driven in the Great War by a Mr Coates, but the location
has been forgotten. --
This car has louvers on the bonnet and
uneven number of wheelnuts, and has electric lighting, so is the cca
1913 Stutz Bearcat Series E. Stutz
started production in 1912 and Series E Bearcat was introduced in late
1913. I love the external Mother-in-Law seat outside by the
passenger! No handle to hold on with! Could do 75+mph.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1913
Calthorpe 10HP Two-Seater
Interesting photo from the Exeter Memories
website (UK) showing
an unknown car and also an ambulance trailer. Car belonged to a Percy
Tucker thought c 1915. The trailer was
used to carry wounded soldiers from Queen Street Station to one of five
VA Military hospitals in the city. --
We found a 1915 press item about what looks
like an identical trailer designed by a E M Tailby of Edgbaston
Birmingham and costing then £40. Car in the picture is a cca
1913 Calthorpe 10HP Two-Seater.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914
Fiat Tipo 2A Coupe de Ville
Cinema screen grab of a vehicle which appeared in an
American film " Paid to Love " made in 1927 where the vehicles are being investigated by
IMCDB. The film is about an American Banker going to a Balkan
country to try and marry off the Crown Prince to help investments.
--
The car is Italian, made by Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino
originally formed in 1899 and currently the fourth largest auto maker in
Europe. From louvers and rounded rad, a cca
1914 FIAT Tipo 2B Coupe de Ville.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914
Hupmobile 32 H Touring
Aged photo from Chris Neaves (South
Africa) of father's cars taken in Rhodesia
after he emigrated there in 1910. Same house in background but the
vegetation is different. -- This
car is American and has the sharply sloping angular bonnet and high set
headlamps, which identifies it. Made in Detroit, Michigan, and for
dating purposes the sloping bonnet limits it to 1913-14, electric
headlamps to the latter, so this is a cca
1914 Hupmobile Model 32H Touring.
Robert Hupp left to form RCH Auto.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1914
Ford Model T Touring
Aged photo from Chris Neaves (South
Africa) of father's cars taken in Rhodesia
after he emigrated there in 1910. Same house in the background but the
vegetation is different. -- This car
is American and has a transverse front spring which identifies it. For
dating, it has no louvers on the bonnet, has electric headlamps, round
oil sidelamps, no drivers' door, a two man top, and folding 40'60
windscreen, making it a made in Highland Park, Michigan,
late cca
1914 Ford Model T Touring.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1920
Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Coupe
Another photo from Jim Derham-Reid from
British Columbia (Canada)
showing a car driven by a Mr Coates. --
We have asked three external wise RR sages
on this enquiry including Tom Clark and Steve Hubbard who has pinpointed
this car to being a 1920
Rolls Royce Silver Ghost with Barker Collapsible Coupe Body,
chassis number 98FW. Interesting to note it carries a 1916 registration,
so is presumably an early 'cherished plate' and was used by
Paisley's Coats cotton thread family.

Kissel Kar 6'61 De Luxe Tourster
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Relatively unusual make and another car manufactured in America, this
one in Hartford Wisconsin, by a farming family of Germanic origin,
which built their first car in 1905. This is a cca
1922 Kissel Kar 6'61 De Luxe Tourster.
More exotic models owned by Al Jolson, Amelia Earhart
and Fatty Arbuckle. |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1922 Ford Model T Touring
Another photo from the Exeter Memories
website (UK) showing
an unknown car belonging to nice Dr. Lovely.
-- Transverse front spring.
Registration is Exeter County Borough
Council c1922, which, as it is the right way round, confirms the car is definitely
left hand drive. This would suggest the car was built in Highland Park,
Michigan, USA, despite there being a plant for these in the UK. This is
a 1922
Ford Model T Touring. Note
the RAC badge on the radiator cap, and British
style side lamps.

DOT Supersports 350 Motorcycle
Another photo from the Exeter Memories
website (UK) showing
an unknown motorcycle. -- Our
'Morris man' Chas Moody, who also knows about old bikes, wondered
what the big dot was on the petrol tank, and then clicked that the
machine is a DOT (Devoid of Trouble). The engine is a proprietary
Bradshaw oil cooled with 'bacon slicer' outside flywheel. Unusual
machine; a DOT
350cc Supersports, registered Somerset
1923. No wonder the owner looks suitably pleased - this is a super
motorcycle.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1923
Morris Cowley Tourer
Interesting blurry photo dated 1927 received from
Teresa Lawler (UK) of grandmother
Elsie Mable Cook of Lyng, Norfolk --
Registration plate no help in dating the
car. It is obviously a Bullnose Morris of which two
near identical models were made: top of the range Oxford and cheaper
Cowley. They are quite difficult to differentiate from a distance
especially as Cowley frequently had the Oxford features as 'extras'.
Fron no offside doors, relatively sure a cca 1923 Morris Cowley Tourer.

Chrysler B70/1928 Chevrolet AA
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our

these are? --
Group of five cars on an excursion from Constanta to Varna in
Bulgaria. All are American. The car on the left is a cca
1924 Chrysler B70 Touring, soon
after the company started in 1924. The car on the right is a cca

by this time part of General Motors Corpn. |

Another batch of fascinating photographs from our

who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
these are? --
Group of five cars on an excursion from Constanta to Varna in
Bulgaria. All are American. The car on the left is a cca
1925 Willys-Knight model 65 Sedan
made by Willys-Overland in Toledo. The car on the right is a cca

by this time part of General Motors C. |

Nash Special 6 Ser. 131 Touring
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
these are? --
Group of five cars on an excursion from Constanta to Varna in
Bulgaria. All are American. The car on the far right of the group
was made in Kenosha Wisconsin and recognisable by the wide
radiator which not yet has a widow's peak. This is a cca
1925 Nash Special Six Series 131
Touring. |

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1926
Austin 20 Ranalagh Limousine
Photo posted on PreWarCar website
requesting identification by Brian Gould saying his Grandfathe ran a
business in Uplyme/Lyme Regis for several years in the early 1900's. It
may be an Austin as he would never buy anything else for his business.
When he retired he bought an A40. --
From the slope of the scuttle, the position of the sidelamp and bracket
type, the size and location of the airvent, windscreen, wiper and
mirror, this looks much like cca
1926 Austin 20 Ranalagh Limousine.

Chevrolet 1 Ton Truck
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Lorries and trucks can be quite difficult especially if a side
view only. However a number of things point towards an an American
vehicle built in Detroit Michigan by General Motors. This seems to
be a cca
1926 Chevrolet 1 Ton Truck which
was selling in USA at that time in 1926, in chassis form, for
$550. |

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1932
Chrysler CI Richmond Sedan
Another photo received from Brian
Edgecombe, Sydney (Australia) researching
family photos from the UK and believes dates can be placed on
them from the vehicles in them. He found us on Google. --
Another that is not easy, this being almost totally obscured by people.
Initially thought to be a '31 Chrysler CD, our Mark Dawber advises
interesting slightly later cca 1932 Chrysler CI Six, Four Door Sedan.
These were also made for UK market as Richmond & Kingston,
and DeSoto as Mortlake!

Ford V8 Fordor Deluxe Sedan
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Unusual angle and another car manufactured in America, this
one in Detroit. This was made during the period that 'slopers'
were popular; this meaning a sloping back end to the car. This is
a cca
1939 Ford V8 Fordor Deluxe Sedan.
A small 'Ford' insignia can just be seen above
the boot handle. |

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1954
Dodge Kingsway Crusader Sedan
Another photo received from Raoul Rainer
from Stuttgart (Germany)
from a batch of photos he purchased on-line recently. This is only a
small section of the photo showing a tailfin which he could not identify
and was intriguing. Seems location was "Bab Edriss" which is
a quarter of the Lebanese city of Beirut. --
Not an easy one as quite a few cars had
small metal tailfins in 1949 - 55 period before the massive fins took
over. This tailfin belongs to a cca
1954 Dodge Kingsway Crusader Sedan.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Unknown
cca 1905 modified Tourer
Photo received from Andre van de Loo,
Wanswert, Friesland (Holland) of
car owned by Mr. H. Posthumus, local blacksmith and maker of
tandem bicycles. In 1913 he became the first car owner in the village, a
1912 Opel which he used as taxi.--
Despite extensive investigations in various
countries we are not able to identify this car. Registration was later
on a 1912 Opel. We feel this is a cca 1905 style car much
modified probably by its blacksmith owner with Germanic looking open
bodywork.
