Swift 15'18hp Tourer
One of three lovely photo received from
Michael Balmforth (Australia)
whose interest is in family history. It
would help knowing rough dates of cars to help identify who the people
are. Photos taken in New South Wales. --
Three of our experts think this is a
British car made in Coventry. The badge on the rad when enlarged seems
to suggest an arrow with letters, which was the mark of a
cca 1908 Swift Tourer, possibly the
15'18HP four. Body style suggests possibly rebodied later.

Humber 10'12 Four Seat Tourer
Surfing through the internet in attempting
to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or old
Postcards, including those on Rootschat and those for sale on Ebay, of very interesting
ancient machinery which has not yet been identified, so we have a go
!
--
British made car with AK registration which is Bradford County
Borough Council (Yorkshire); no numbers visible so no help in dating.
The car has almost diamond rad, so it is a cca
1908 Humber 10'12 Four Seat Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1911 Bergdoll Model 30 Touring
Another photo received from Georges
Truffaut (Belgium) of
vehicles they are trying to
identify. Some people think this is a Reo, others say EMF Studebaker.
Probably taken in Canada or United States. --
Neither. Turns out to be a very uncommon car. Our Ariejan Bos is quite
sure it is a Philadelphia made cca 1911 Bergdoll Model 30 Touring. The
chassis is not straight and has a kink down largely hidden by the
toolbox ! Not a unique feature, but unusual rear hub, spring and
mudguard also match.

SCAT 22HP Tourer
Rather magnificent photo received from
Giles Bryan (UK) saying
" I was going through some old family albums and came across this
car. The picture is about 1920 in England. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. --
British wire wheels and RHD led me up a
'British' blind alley. One of our wise sages however advised probably
bought and fitted out in the UK by Newton and Bennett, but on an Italian
chassis. This seems to be a cca
1911 SCAT 22HP Tourer. SCAT
started by one of Ceirano brothers.

Hotchkiss AB Town-Car
Surfing through the internet in attempting
to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or old
Postcards, including those on Rootschat and those for sale on Ebay, of very interesting
ancient machinery which has not yet been identified, so we have a go
!
--
While the stature of the apparent driver may have been relatively small,
this is a rather grand French cca 1912 Hotchkiss AB Town-Car. Hotchkiss
was American making armaments who came to France 1860.

Mercedes 37'95 Tourer
Surfing through the internet in attempting
to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or old
Postcards, including those on Rootschat and those for sale on Ebay, of very interesting
ancient machinery which has not yet been identified.
--
Exhibition sign says Milnes Daimler who made busses and commercial
vehicles but were also in 1909 agents for Mercedes in the UK; dissolved
by the WW1! Four exhausts and chain drive
suggest a cca
1913 Mercedes 37'95 Tourer.

Unic Landaulette Taxi
Lovely photo received from Gerold Heinje (Germany) saying
" taken June 1914 during honeymoon trip from London to Cornwall.
The groom was not the owner, - architect who had a motorcycle. Could one
rent in 1914 a car/chauffeur for honeymoon? --
Registration is London CC 1914 and
the car is French. This looks like cca 1914 Unic Landaulette Taxi
of which many hundreds were in use locally. By 1915 it was the only taxi
purchasable in London. I guess they could hire
a taxi to go anywhere!

1914 Napier Special
Lovely photo received from Keith
Chiazzari, Alberta (Canada) saying
"..always wondered what my Great-uncle Leonard Slatter is
driving; from his WW1 album taken in France while with the Royal Naval
Air Service in 1917 or 1918; fairly upmarket vehicle. --
Things do not add up on this photo so we
think this could be a cca
1914 Special. Radiator is Napier, bonnet
adapted to fit the rad. Wheelbase is very short for a car with such a
long bonnet, wrong rear wheel. Engine may
be a Naper 6.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1917
Liberty Truck B 3-5 Ton
One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who
is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this rare
photo of truck in town of Narwa of the North-Western Army.
Anti-Bolsheviks who fought Communists in 1919-1920 during the Civil War
in Russia.
-- American standardised cca
1917 'Liberty Truck B'; 6.9L, 52HP, 4
cylinder. 9000 made 1917'18 by 15 US manufacturers, 7000 shipped
overseas. All had simple radiator marking sign of 'USA'.

Pluto Amilcar Type CC
Another lovely photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what this
vehicle is? --
The car is relatively easy to identify as French but the body is
unusual. Helpfully, a circular badge on the side of the car has wording
TH Bender Karosseriebau Wurzburg, this being Germany. On the rad is a
cat badge Pluto, all which suggests this could be a German
licence made cca
1922 Pluto Amilcar Type CC.

Dodge Brothers 116 Touring
One of three lovely photo received from
Michael Balmforth (Australia)
whose interest is in family history. It
would help knowing rough dates of cars to help identify who the people
are. Photos taken in New South Wales. --
This is an American car from Auburn Hills,
Michigan, and having a chrome radiator surround, bullet headlamps, from
a curved skirt under the doors with kickplates, and having a two piece
windscreen, all suggests this is a cca
1925 Dodge Brothers 116 Touring.

1927
FIAT 509 Cabriolet
Cinema screen grab taken from an Italian
comedy film " Quando c'era lui... caro lei!" made in 1978
where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Film is a satirical
recount of the Italian Mussolini fascist era. --
Italian film so likely an Italian car, and indeed
it is. A person is sitting low behind the front passenger seat
suggesting this is the Cabriolet. So this would be a cca
1927 FIAT 509 Cabriolet. Quite a small
car made between 1924-1929, as a
spyder, saloon or cabriolet with 990cc engine.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1928
Dodge Senior Six Sedan
One of three lovely photo received from
Michael Balmforth (Australia)
whose interest is in family history. It
would help knowing rough dates of cars to help identify who the people
are. Photos taken in New South Wales, this one was taken in Vaucluse. --
This one took some searching because
fashion was for multi sectioned bonnet louvres on many makes. Our Mark
Dawber advised it was a mainstream American car, and it is a
cca 1928 Dodge Brothers Senior Six Sedan.
Introduced 1927.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1928 Panhard Levassor Tourer
Another lovely photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what this
vehicle is? --
Very nice luxury car with unusual bodywork. Fortunately the wheelhubs
are just visible as is part of the logo on the radiator. This car is
French, made by one of the pioneers of motoring 1887. Model is
difficult to judge but looks like a cca
1928 Panhard & Levassor Tourer,
Model X42 or perhaps smaller X63.

Chevrolet Universal AD Sedan
Surfing through the internet in attempting
to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or old
Postcards, including those on Rootschat and those for sale on Ebay, of very interesting
ancient machinery which has not yet been identified, so we have a go
!
--
This one is American and has the typical central rear lamp that
identifies is as a cca 1930 Chevrolet Universal Six AD
Sedan. It does
also help that the logo and badge, just above the rear lamp,
confirm this information.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1930
FIAT 521 Saloon
Surfing through the internet in attempting
to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs or old
Postcards, including those on Rootschat and those for sale on Ebay, of very interesting
ancient machinery which has not yet been identified, so we have a go
!
--
This seems to be a cca
1930 FIAT Model 521 Saloon. These were
made between 1928 and 1931, had 6 cylinder 2516cc engines and were rated
50HP. They followed Fiat 520s. This has later semaphore
trafficators.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1933 Wolseley Hornet
Special
Photograph posted on the PreWarCar website
of fathers car by Marcelo Kauffman who wanted to know the make
and year. Can anyone help? -- This
is a British car with what is not a British numberplate although it
does look like one. The car is a cca 1933 Wolseley Hornet
Special. These were supplied as
chassis to external cochbuilders including Swallow, Abbey, Jensen and
Eustace Watkins; 1271 or 1604cc. This one has no runningboard, single upright grille
rod, spats. E-W Daytona four seater?

Riley Lynx Four Seat Tourer
Damaged photo received from Hannah Bradley (UK) saying
"I am wondering if you can help identify the car in this photo.
Photo taken in 1963 by the Tyne bridge in Newcastle. I believe my Father
was going on a rally of some kind. It may be a Riley. --
Registration is Leeds CBC early 1935. This
is indeed a Riley and a cca
1935 Riley Lynx Four Seat Tourer. Our
Riley expert Chris Cuss confirms it is from the '22 T 'Chassis series,
with new 1,496cc 4 cylinder engine. Lynx were made 1934 to 36.

1935 Lancia Augusta Berline
Cinema screen grab taken from an Italian
comedy film " Quando c'era lui... caro lei!" made in 1978
where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Film is a satirical
recount of the Italian Mussolini fascist era. --
Italian film so likely an Italian car, and indeed
it is, but possibly made in France. The badge and the rad give it away.
This is a cca
1935 Lancia Augusta Berline. The
Augusta was a departure by Lancia into smaller cars, this being
V4 1196cc. It was also marketed as Belna, 1933 to 36.

1936
Opel Blitz 1.5 Ton Bus
Cinema screen grab taken from a
Czechoslovak film " Usmevavá zem" (Smiling Country) made in
1952
where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Film is about a village
in South Bohemia undergoing changes of collective farming. --
Czechoslovak film but after much searching we are
relatively sure this is a German Vehicle made by an American subsidiary
of General Motors. We think this is a cca
1936 Opel Blitz 1.5 Ton Bus, the body
size suggests a relatively small eleven seater coach.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1942
Packard 0ne Eighty Limousine
One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who
is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this photo of a vehicle
possibly photographed in South America in the 1950's.
-- This is an American car entering
an America establishment. There were a number of cars in period that
had the bodystripes on the wings, but our Mark Dawber rightly says this
is a cca 1942 Packard
One Eighty, Super Eight Limousine. Writing
on the boot suggests OneEighty.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1946
Ford Super DeLuxe 2 Door Sedan
Couple of photos of an old car shell received from
Jennifer Panton (USA) who
is trying to help her dad figure out what kind of car hull this is.
Photo was taken in the United States. Is it a 1947 Ford? --
Yes indeed this is a Ford but it is not
1947. The car on the photo has two chrome embellishers across the back,
for two years only. The body side embellisher is relatively straight, no
dip at back, & side windows have chrome surround. This is
a cca
1946 Ford Super DeLuxe 2 Door Sedan.

Willys-Overland Jeepster
Number of photos received from Matt
Sykes (USA) saying"
I hope you can help me identify this vehicle. I was told that it is a
1935 Willys Jeep. I can't seem to find any information on the internet.
I found this site and decided to send some pics. --
This is indeed a Willys but is a cca
1949 Willys-Overland Jeepster.
Different sizes of engines available but cannot tell from the photos.
Dating is from the Willys badge being below the bonnet and the style of
the grille. No outer rear step so 1950?

cca 1914 Two Seater
Intriguing photo received from Aileen Brookfield
(UK) saying
" I have some photographs of lovely old cars that belonged to my
paternal Grandfather and wonder if you could identify one in particular
for me. Tiny photo I have had professionally blown up. Only clue on it
states Fleetwood 1919. -- So
pre 1914 and WW1 but regretfully none of our experts have been able to
provide identification. Not
enough visible. Seems British electric
side lamps & polished conical wheel embellishers.

'Twenties' Race car
Puzzling photo received from Patricia
Allen (UK)
saying" I have a photo of this
car and can't identify it. I thought it might be a Bugatti but I can't
find anything exactly the same when looking at pictures on line so think
I must be wrong. -- Definitely
not Bugatti, probably a home made special. Registration is London CC,
mid 1921. One of our wise sages suggested
a British ABC; springs, no rad cap and
no visible rad = air-cooled maybe, high starting handle perhaps high
mounted flat twin.
