::
The SVVS Website currently receives
approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,
cars are in year order:

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1904
De Dion Bouton 6HP
Lovely photo received from Chris Reynolds
of Hertfordshire Genealogy (UK) from
a collection of Jim Mullary relating to a Reynolds family farm. The car
almost certainly belonged to a member of the Reynolds Family of Heath
Farm, St Albans, Herts. The registration number is AR (or perhaps AK)
419. -- Reg
AR 419 would be Hertford County Council mid/late 1904, whereas AK 419
would be Bradford late 1905. Leavers by steering column say this is a c
1904 De Dion Bouton 6HP Two Seater.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1909
Brasier KD Open Drive Limousine
Another request for identification of a vehicles received from our regular
contributor Joao Ferreira (Portugal)
who says 'Seated on top of the car
photographer Joshua Benoliel is able to see behind the wall where a duel
is taking place between two well-known Portuguese politicians in June
1910. Registration "LX 775" is from the Lisbon
Municipality, belonging to one of the contenders. -- From
the ridged bonnet, this is a cca
1908/9 Brasier possibly KD Open Drive Limousine.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1909
Leon Bollee Landaulette
One of a number of lovely photos received from
Owen Matthews (UK)
relating to his distant relative James Gunn Hilliar who was a chauffeur
in 1911 in Fetcham Surrey. This is one of a number of cars he drove. Can
we identify them? --
The bonnet and radiator appear a bit younger than the bodywork/mudguards
so this could be a later re-bodied car. From the shape of the bonnet
this would seen to be a cca
1909 Leon Bollee Landaulette,
possibly imported via Cannstatt Auto Supply Assn.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Probably
1910 Mercedes-Electrique
Another request for an identification of a vehicles received from our regular
contributor Joao Ferreira (Portugal) of
anambulance that once belonged to the Portuguese Red Cross, can we help
identifying it. -- Strikingly
unusual item is the circular drum on the inside of front wheel. Nick
Georgano kindly confirmed that this is an electric vehicle of the Lohner-Porsche
type, probably cca
1910 Mercedes Electrique. Porsche
left the Austrian Lohner Werke in 1905 for Austro Daimler
(Mercedes).

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1910
DFP 10'12_Roadster
Small photos received from Georges
Truffaut (Belgium)
from postcards they are trying to
identify. It seems to be the car of the photographer as it
appears on different cards. Photographed in the Cantal 'departement' of
France. --
Photos are very small/blurry but from the curve to the bottom of the radiator,
the curved steering arm forward of the axle , and the large three
letters of the badge, we are relatively certain this is a cca1911
Doriot Flandrin & Parant (DFP) 10'12 Roadster.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1911
Belsize 12HP Van
Photo received from Roger Butlin, Pinner (UK),
who heard of us through Family Tree
Magazine, which shows uncle Arthur Henry
Warren Todman standing beside a new van just delivered to grandfather's
retail business. Guess the date being about 1922. Vehicle registration
looks like H6034. --
H 6034 is Middlesex CC but accurate dating data lost. Reg letter H
ranges from 1903 to 1912. 6034 would be about 1910/11. This is cca
1911 Belsize 12HP Van. Does not look 11
years old if photo 1922?

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1911 Ford Model T Tourer
Lovely period family photo received from Kim
Hinsley (UK), from
cousin in New Zealand, taken in England around 1911. She is currently
writing a book about the family and wants to include this picture. --
Transverse front spring but regretfully cannot see registration which
would provide accurate dating. This is an American made, but from the
shape of the scuttle a big British bodied car, which has front doors and
has a winged AA badge, both making it earliest date a cca
1911 Ford Model T Tourer.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1911
Darracq 18'24 Tourer
Another batch of photos received from Georges
Truffaut (Belgium)
from postcards they are trying to
identify. This one has been discussed on a forum and suggested as a 1911
Darracq Cll. --
Two of our experts agree on the Darracq
and on cca 1910/11. The bodywork style
of having a scuttle with a vertical cutoff was popular 1909 to 1914. We
have a very similar car on Help Page 16 as a 1911 16HPp but one of our
experts feels it is a bigger car, unless the people are
small, and probably 18'24.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1913
Triumph 500cc 3.5hp
Another photo
received from Mark Caudwell (UK) saying
'what a brilliant site you have! I am enclosing some pictures relating
to my grandfather Charles Caudwell and friends, being near his
Abingdon home. Can you identify the motorcycle. --
Registration says Berks CC 1913. Our Robin
Vince says Triumph 500cc 3.5hp roadster.
Chas Moody agrees but dates build cca 1911; plain front mudguard, lamp
brackets on both sides front fork pivot, and the smaller,
double spring at the top of the front forks.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Bianchi Tipo S 10'12HP
Another from a batch of photos received from Georges
Truffaut (Belgium)
from postcards they are trying to
identify. This he believes is a Bianchi but he doesn't know
whether it is going to the coach builder or it has been stripped .
--
Difficult to say because from 1913 Bianchi had their own coachwork
department so cars had factory bodies. Bianchi was also active in UK and
some cars sold to UK were bodied by English companies. This seems
'smaller' car so cca
1913 Bianchi Tipo S 10'12HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914
PicPic 4.5L GP Cabriolet
Another very unusual
car being investigated by AutoPuzzles, which we named, and one
which deserves showing as an aid to identification of vintage
vehicles. -- This
car is unusual in many respects, one being that it was designed
in Geneva, Switzerland but built in France. This is a cca
1914 Piccard-Pictet 4.5L GP Cabriolet.
It seems this car may have been built before WW1 and was one of two
Pic-Pic 4.5L 1914 Grand Prix cars, - re-bodied later. Has UK
sidelights and RAC badge on cap. Also is RHD.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1914
Siddeley Deasy Landaulette
One of a number of lovely photos received from
Owen Matthews (UK)
relating to his distant relative James Gunn Hilliar who was a chauffeur
in 1911 in Fetcham Surrey. This is one of a number of cars he drove. Can
we identify them? --
British car despite the Renault-like front end and radiator at the back
of the bonnet. Company started as Deasy MCMC in 1906 but Deasy left
unhappy in 1908. Boss became John Siddeley and company renamed in 1912.
This is cca
1914 Siddeley Deasy Landaulette.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1917
Hudson Super Six Phaeton
Lovely period photo received from Stefanie
Stephens-Forester (USA) trying
to de-mistify some genalogy. Photo is of a car by "US Post
office of Douthat, Okla.", near town of Pitcher, which opened March
1917. Is the car a Biddle? --
No, but Biddle did make bodies for them. Triangular badge, tie bar over
headlights, no bar across the bottom of the rad, 10 spokes front, curved
base to windscreen, all suggest a cca
1917 Hudson Super Six Phaeton. Car
behind horse & cart seems moving Model T Ford.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1919
Lexington 25'35 R19 Touring
Another puzzling photo posted on the AACA website,
this by White, saying this is a photo of the Prince of Wales, later to
become King Edward VIII, taken in Nanaimo BC, in 1919. Can anyone
pinpoint the make of car? --
The badge seems to be rectangular suggesting USA Lexinton. We found
another photo of the side of the car which shows 10 spoke front and 12
spoke rear wheels, and long multiple slanted louvers which limits it to
being cca
1919 Lexington 25'35 R-19 Touring 5 places.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1920s
Elephant Acetelylene Headlamp
Interesting photos received from Darren
Brown (UK) of
an old headlight he
is chasing trying to find out its history. Made of aluminium,
looks like ran on gas. 'Elephant Motors Ltd' stamped on it. Any
connection with Humphrey and Meteorite cars?? --
No. Elephant
were based in SE London and were motor factors able to
provide hard-to-get and extinct spares for UK and American cars/lorries.
Still operational in 1960s. Doubtful actually manufactured the
lamps. Badge engineered & sales.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1923
Beardmore 12HP Sports Skiff
Another very unusual
car being investigated by AutoPuzzles, which we named, and one
which deserves showing as an aid to identification of vintage
vehicles. -- This
is a 1923
Beardmore 12HP Sports Skiff. 1836
Scottish conglomerate from Clydeside who built naval guns, then ships,
then aircraft carriers, then airships and aircraft, also manufactured
railway locomotives. Bought Sentinel steam vehicle co., diversified
into cars, and 1919 into manufacture of the Beadmoe London Taxi
to 1966.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1923
Peugeot Quadrilette Cabriolet
Series of photographs
received from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. He has come across
this car in Romania and is thinking of buying it. (Has!) Can we confirm
make and model ? -- This
is a French cca
1923/4 Peugeot Quadrilette Cabriolet,
probably the 172 BC. Side by side seating, has the multiple
louvers, has the tie bar and small lamps. Valence over
transverse front spring is missing. Later
rounded back. |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1924 Hudson Super Six Phaeton
Another photo received from Raoul
Rainer from Stuttgart (Germany) from
a batch of 1920s/30s photos he purchased on-line recently. Initially
looked at Adler but the car
looks slightly American. Do we have any idea what it could be? --
The bonnet is heavily rounded, headlamps are drum
type, radiator is painted, louvers are part of the bonnet; a cca
1924 Hudson Super Six Phaeton. The car
inforeground has horizontal slats, rounded rad, mascot
which looks Essex; a cca 1927 Essex Coach.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1925 Unic L1
Landaulette
Lovely period photo received from Colin
Harris of Portsmouth (UK) of
a car on an old postcard of Thornton Heath he is trying to identify. He also enlarged the mascot. --
Mascot was after-market so not really a help. The bullnose radiator, and
the twin bonnet louver panels, are however a giveaway for make, which is
French. Registration YL 2846 is London County Council, which dates it as
a cca
1925 Unic L1 Open Drive Landaulette.
Unic were well known in UK for making the 'London' taxi.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1925 Morris Cowley Bullnose Tourer
Another lovely but much damaged blurry photo received from Brett
Rawlings (Australia) who
is investigating his family history. Is this the same car as
previous. --
No. The other photo (also on this page) was of an American cca 1925 Rugby. This photo, which we have considerably
repaired, is of a different car from a different continent. This is a car made in Britain, a
cca
1925 Morris Cowley Bullnose, pinpointed by our Chas Moody from having
black hubcap centres, not nickel as on Oxford.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1925
Rugby Model F Touring
Lovely but blurry photo received from Brett
Rawlings (Australia) who
is investigating his family history. Knowing the make of car etc., would
give him some insight into the circumstances of that part of his family.
Location is countryside of south-east Queensland (Australia). --
Being blurry it is difficult to make out the precise shape of the
radiator. A number of cars had scalloped rads but as this one has a
hinge lowish on the side panel of the bonnet, it
is a cca
1925 Rugby Model F Touring.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1927
Talbot 14'45 'Special' Another photo
received from Mark Caudwell (UK) saying
'what a brilliant site you have! I am enclosing some pictures relating
to my grandfather Charles Caudwell and friends, location being near his
Abingdon home. Can you identify the cars. --
This one is not at all easy because the car has a 'special' body,
'cycle' type mudguards and even the radiator has a stone guard to make
identification more difficult. Notwithstanding, our Tony
Oakes is relatively sure this is a cca
1927 Talbot 14'45 'Special'.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1928
Chandler Royal Eight Sedan
Another from a batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? -- Another
American, this one a little less known, manufactured by a company started
in 1913 in Cleveland Ohio by a bunch of executives who had left
Lozier. Company peaked in 1927 and was purchased by Hupp Motor
Works in 1929, and died. This is a cca
1928 Chandler Royal Eight Sedan. |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1950 Singer Nine AB Sports Roadster
Lovely family photo received from Andy Iles
(Australia),
saying this is his father's first car. All he knows is that it was red,
and he had it in country Victoria, Australia around 1950/55. Any clues
would be most appreciated. Thought it might be an MG? --
Not an MG but another of the older British sporting marques. Company
started in 1874 making bikes, then motorcycles, then into cars in 1905.
This is a cca
1950 Singer Nine AB Sports Roadster.
Taken over by Roots 1956 and Chrysler 1970.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Probably
1933 Citroen C4G Saloon
Another from a batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? -- This
one is a bit of a puzzle and is not a positive identification. The
'feel' is French and the tyres are Michelin, central chrome strip
on the rad, seems to be right hand drive and a noticeable central
dip pattern on the panel above the windscreen. Most probably
very early cca
1933 Citroen C4G Saloon. |
