:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1905 Argyll 10'12 Tourer
Photo received from Tim Ashby (UK) asking if by any chance we might identify this car for him which comes from an old plate glass negative that he has had for some time. -- Registration O 908  was issued by Birmingham County Borough Council but their dating records are lost. The car however was not made in Birmingham but made by one of the best known Scottish car makers, then in Glasgow. The high number of the  registration  indicates  cca 1905  Argyll  10'12 Tourer, 2 cyl. 1985cc.

1905 Argyll 10'12 Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906 Sanchis Tricar
Enquiry received from Sergio Landete (Spain) who is investigating the history of a "Mass" car. The connection was that Enrique Sanchis made cars sold by Leon Pierron who also sold the Mass car in the UK-- Very interesting detail of the 1906 Sanchis Tricar, way ahead of its time, was that it had the frame and the body made of unified pressed steel rather than tubes. Went on to make voiturettes in Courbevoie in France in 1910-12 with chassis/body pressed as one unit with riveted bodypanels.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909 Darracq Tourer
Another lovely photo received from Brian Reid of Melbourne, (Australia) from an album which is dated 1919 and shows a car, and a motorcycle with sidecar. Photos were most likely taken in or near the Lake District in the UK.  -- I recognise the pub having been there, as Kirkstone Pass Inn; also second on Help Page 2. Registration EC 484 was issued by  Westmorland County Council in 1909. The car has a Hackney Carriage (taxi) plate and is a cca 1909 Darracq Tourer, (14'16?)

1909 Darracq Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1912 SCAT 15 Two-Seater
Fascinating photo received from David Stubbins (New Zealand) of a car that belonged to his grandfather in South Africa (between 1905 and 1918). The car had become stuck in a river in South Africa and had to be towed out by a team of horses. Cape Town registration CA1803. -- We have no info on SA registration dating, but the car was a cca 1912 SCAT Two-seater, probably the 15HP, built in Turin, Italy, by Societa Ceirano Automobili Torino.  UK & Colonies agent: Newton & Bennet, Manchester.

1912 SCAT 15 Two-Seater

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1912 Humber 12'20 Tourer
Two emails and three photos received from Richard Perrin (UK). The first one saying he is attaching two photos of a car which he believes is a 1912 Gladiator. His parents told him that Great Uncle owned such a car. In both cases he thinks it is the car on the left of the picture. The third  is at  Great Uncle's hotel in Bewdley, Worcestershire. -- Complicated. The car on left is indeed a Gladiator but the one on the right, and in the hotel yard, are of a new cca 1912 Humber 12'20 Tourer.

1912 Humber 12'20 Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:cca 1912 Gladiator Tourer
Two emails and three photos received from Richard Perrin (UK). The third was taken at Great Uncle's hotel in Bewdley, Worcestershire, and is notated as 'unknown couple' and seems not so important. -- Complicated and a shame, because the car on left is indeed a Gladiator, and the 'unknown  couple' is also of a cca 1912 Gladiator Tourer, possibly a 12'14 series P.  Probably Great Uncle's car! Gladiator was owned at the time, and also marketed as,  Vinot & Deguingand,  France.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1918 AJS Model D Combination
Another lovely photo received from Brian Reid of Melbourne, (Australia) from an album which is dated 1919 and shows a car, and a motorcycle with sidecar. Photos were most likely taken in or near the Lake District in the UK.  -- I recognise the pub having been there, as Kirkstone Pass Inn; also second on Help Page 2. Registration DA1155 was issued by Wolverhampton CBC but no dating info. Our Robin Vince furkled through 1000 pages to determine this is   cca 1918 AJS Model D.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1920 Berliet VB15 Tourer
Photo received from Graham Gordon, Prestayn, Wales (UK) saying believed taken around 1910 at Rushen Abbey, Ballasalla, Isle of Man by a professional photographer with photo ID number on car. Second photo same car/people outside Abbey Hotel in Ballasalla, possibly same professional photographer as our Beeston Humber 2007 enquiry Help Page 11. -- Fascinating coincidence but photo could not be 1910 as this is post WW1 Lyon, France, cca 1920 Berliet VB15 Tourer,- so out 10 yrs.

1920 Berliet VB15 Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:cca1924 Oakland Roadster
Difficult photo received from Eric Holmes (UK) of a car that belonged to his grandfather who came to England from Denmark and made his fortune working for Woolworths. Grandmother is sitting in the driving seat of very posh car.  -- This is a very difficult photo to identify but our Mark Dawber is relatively sure this is a cca 1924 Oakland Roadster with probably a UK body. No entrance to rear seat but a second windscreen for dickey seat, US Headlamps, UK sidelights. UK agents Ancona/Anzac

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1926 Renault NN Saloon
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?  --  It is interesting that Flor keeps coming up with pictures of mostly American vehicles in Romania.  Nice to have a European car for a change! The scuttle nose defines the make, the diamond shaped logo that it is post 1925, profiled mudguards and raised filler cap that this is a cca 1926 Renult NN Saloon.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1926 Morris Cowley Bullnose Two-Seat.
Lovely photo received from Gary Deacon (South Africa) of his great uncle Frank's father standing beside what is assumed his car. The registration CCK indicates Swellendam/Barrydale, Cape Province, South Africa.-- No sooner had we looked at the photo, than a further email received saying he thinks it is a 24 Cowley. Nearly right indeed. Spring hangers and shape advise make, but the fitted petrol can and a bigger Dickey suggests this is a  cca 1926 Morris  Cowley  Bullnose  Two-Seater.

1926 Morris Cowley Bullnose Two-Seater

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927 Bugatti Type 38 Torpedo Tourer
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?  Is it a NAG or a Bugatti? --  Quite sure not a German NAG although they did make some lovely sportscars. This is a French car designed by an Italian, built in an ex-German town, with a body designed by another Italian in France. It is a cca 1927 Bugatti Type 38 Torpedo Tourer  with a caroserie by Figoni.

This is a cca 1930 DeSoto Six CK Phaeton.

One of a number of lovely photos received from Larry Bannon (UK) who is the National Fleet Services Manager of the NHS Blood and Transplant Special Health Authority and is keen to learn more about the vehicles shown for their internal knowledge.  -- No mention of the location or the year of the photo but the vehicle does have a registration AGF 996 which was issued by London County Council in early 1933. This is a cca 1933 Bedford 12cwt VYC Light Delivery Van;>Vauxhall>General Motors.

1933 Bedford 12cwt VYC Light Delivery Van

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1935 Willys Model 77 Sedan
Another photo received from Gary Deacon (South Africa) this time of his mother Joyce on the right and father standing left in front of an unidentified car. They had made it up a steep Bainskloof pass outside Wellington, Cape Province, South Africa on the 15th July 1950. -- Do-it-yourself Gary then emailed back almost immediately that he thinks it is a cca 1935 Willys Model 77 Sedan. Agree! Distinctive circular louvers, made between 1934-36. Willys made 650,000 MBs (Jeeps) during WW2.

Another batch of fascinating photographs from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what these are?  --  Nice to see a couple of Europeans. Car on the left is a cca 1936 Mercedes Benz 230 Cabriolet and on the right a cca 1937 FIAT 508C Ballila Saloon. The Mercedes looks like the earlier W21 1961cc  ('33 to '36). This time Do-it-yourself Gary emailed the question with the answer: possibly a 1936 two door Chevrolet but not sure if this particular model was referred to as a Standard two door or Master Deluxe?-- As I can see the rear door hinges, this is a four door car, it has a rounded rad, and therefore has to be the cca 1936 Chevrolet Master Sport Six Sedan.

1936 Chevrolet Master De Luxe Sport Sedan

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1937 Morris Eight Tourer Series 1
