::
The SVVS Website currently receives
approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided :

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1902
Gladiator 12 HP Tonneau
Damaged photo submitted by Scott
Jones-Christ of Toowoomba, Queensland (Australia)
whose origin is a mystery as he has no clues as to the identity
of the men. Is the car a De Dion Bouton? -- No.
Curious one which John Warburton clarified with the help of Rory
Sinclair as a cca
1902 Gladiator 12HP used before registrations came in. Reg is
early 1904, and photo is probably much later because the car has newer
add-ons such as windscreen, driver's door, mudguards & running board.

Lanchester 28 Landau
Unusual and very interesting photo received
from John Sherborne

which we have repaired. The driver is his grandfather William
Ernest Davies, chauffeur to Lord Howard de Walden, at his households at
Audley End, Saffron Walden, and Seaburn House, Belgravia, London during
1905-11. Also chauffeur to John Gurney Aggs of Pippbrook, Dorking,
Surrey during 1911-30. -- The
car is recognisable by having practically no bonnet and so is a late

Humber 28HP Tourer
Very interesting photo received from
John Sherborne
(New Zealand).
The driver is his father-in-law's father, and the photograph was
taken in Devonport, Auckland. New Zealand. It is understood to have been
taken in the early 1920s. -- Confirmed
by Tony Oakes,
John Tarring and other experts as a cca 1912

particularly distinctive as indeed is the leather skirt and the very
wide wheel hubs featured during the 1911 to 1914 period.

Isota Fraschini 18'25 Type EC
Request received from Benedetto
Gugliotta of the Fondazione Giovan Pietro Grimaldi
in Modica (Italy) saying
that professor Grimaldi purchased in 1913
an Isotta-Fraschini 18/25 HP, Chassis Tipo EC. They are
trying to find some photos of that model to see what the car looked
like. They found our website 'really reliable and well-done', and so
they thought we could help. Help came in the form of our colleague
Manuel in Australia who found the photos in Tito Anselmi's
excellent book on I-F.

Daimler Charabanc
Another of a number of very interesting
photos submitted by George Wigglesworth (UK)
who is assembling the history of his local villages in Derbyshire. This
picture headed ''Chapel outing outside Lea Chapel'. Lea is in Derbyshire
near Matlock and the Chapel started by the Nightingale family was one of
the first non conformist. Alas no names of people or date. -- Early

Another very interesting 'moody' period photo
received from Malcolm Fare (UK)
who is writing a history of the parish of Hanley Castle and

shown. -- These cars are relatively
easy. On the left with a transverse front spring is a
cca 1920 Ford Model T Touring, and on the right is a cca 1919 Morgan

Vinot et Deguingang Type BO
Another photo received from Jim Derham-Reid
from British Columbia (Canada). Cannot
make out the make on the original photo (not readable on this
scan) but thinks the first part is Vinot. Photographed at small local
car show in Lytham-St. Annes '79. --
Popular French make 1901-26, initially Vinot & Deguringand, later

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1924
Lagonda 12'24 Saloon
Moody but unclear photo submitted by Mary
Lenox (UK)
who is trying to identify the lady standing beside the car, and a date
for the car would be very helpful. Photo was probably taken in England,
but may have been taken in Australia. Apparently Beaulieu could not
identify the car. -- Not
an easy one but fortunately our Tony Oakes spotted that it had no
dumbirons so transverse spring, perhaps Lagonda. Investigation in
detail revealed that it was indeed
a cca
1924 Lagonda 12'24 Saloon.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1924
Amilcar CC Bernardet Bodied
Photo submitted to Autopuzzles for
identification. --
The car is obviuosly an Amilcar but the body was most unusual. As we
have the premier Amilcar expert in our Society we put him to the test,
which apparently wasn't much of one. Came back immedaitely with that
this is a
cca 1924 Amilcar CC with a unique body
built by Bernardet Freres. Bernardet, located south of Paris,
were initially mainly a motorcycle side-car manufacturers, who
later went into manufacture of scooters.

Another of a number of very interesting
photos submitted by Jan Lundin (Sweden)
showing vehicles in the 20s and 30s Scandinavia, for which he is seeking
identification and dating. Jan has habit of
unearthing unusual vehicles and this is no exception. -- The
car looks very much like an Austrian
cca 1924 Steyr Type 5
Tourer. We
had received a photo of a similar car from Jan
earlier.
The car
features the very fashionable 'spitzkuhler'
pointed radiator then much in favour.

Another photo
received from George Wigglesworth (UK)
of 'Mildred', a car used by his uncle, George Metcalfe
Wigglesworth, in Halkirk, Alberta, Canada where he was a butcher. He
emigrated about 1910. It is believed that the car was modified by
creating access from the back so as to be able to load carcases.
He used it for many years and may not have got it new. -- We
can confirm that the car is
cca 1926 Ford Model T 'Tudor'.
Hinges are visible at back of the car, suggesting door.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1936
Zenith-JAP Motorcycle
Amusing photo
received from John Lovell (UK) of
his father and two friends astride a motorbike probably taken in about
1936. -- Registration
is Oxford CBC. Engine seems to be a JAP. Our Geoff Morris immediately
recogised it as a Zenith
from the letter 'Z' on the distinctive tank. Initially made at Hampton
Court (1904) but taken over late thirties by dealer Writers at
Kennington Cross, London. Looks like a 500cc (OHV), but it may just be a
350cc as they are hard to distinguish.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1939
Hillman Minx Drop Head Coupe
Great period photo received from David
Champion (UK). Hisfather
ran a shop in Dorking before WW2 and in late 1930's he bought the
car. Possibly a Humber Snipe. Photographed on Leith Hill when Father was
in the Home Guard before callup when he used to sit in the tower, plane
spotting at night. -- Regret
not a Humber but Hillman. Both companies taken over by Roots Group in
1931. By registration the model is a 1939

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1949
Pontiac Silver Streak
Slightly fuzzy photo received from Peter
Nickerson (USA)
saying he would
love to identify the make, model and year of the vehicle in this
photo. It was taken in April of 1955, so the car was probably from the
1940s. -- Our
friends at the AACA advise that this is a
cca
1949 Pontiac Silver Streak Sedan. The
smaller, less elaborate hood ornament marks this a 1949 model which also
featured the all-new Fisher body. Pontiac was a division General
Motors that had been Oakland, made in Pontiac.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Stationary
Engine & Eisemann Mag
Series of photos received from Piero
Queirolo from Santiago de Chile (Chile)
saying he has a stationary
engine, but he needs information on how to restore it. Do we
have any information about this model, where is was made, nationality,
age, etc. brochures, any
information on it. --We do not have members who are 'stationary'
experts. One of our readers Jason Tysoe from
England has since advised that this is a Gas
Engine made by Andrews in
Stockport, Manchester, - built circa 1900.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:cca
1914 Darracq perhaps
Damaged photo, which we repaired, received from
Chris Scott (Brazil
& NI),
also sent to Crossleys, asking if a Crossley. They said no, suggesting
us. -- We
also say no. We asked for magnification of wheelhub. Unfortunately not
readable. Our John Warburton is positive not a Crossley from the wheels
and shape of radiator. However does not know what it is. Our thoughts is
it has many features of perhaps a 1912/14 Darracq. Registration is
Belfast, but precise dating info lost.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:Late
1930s American Sedans
Very small pixly section of a photo
received from Ernest Byerly of Arkansas (USA)
where the cars were in the background. The
picture was found in a bunch of old family photos and is of a gravesite.
He is trying to narrow it down to which family member, and knowing the
year of the cars would help. He thinks it is between 1920 and 1940.
-- Quite correct
but we regret cannot make out any detail so unable to date
accurately or identify. The car back in
foreground is mid/late thirties.
