::
The SVVS Website currently receives
approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,
cars are in year order:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1903
De Dietrich RE Tonneau
A series of lovely photos received from
Susanna Holt, from Arizona (USA),
the great granddaughter of Sir Joseph Beecham of 'Beecham pills', who
was also the father of Sir Thomas Beecham, the famous conductor.
Susanna is writing a book on her Grandmother Josephine Boston, sister
of Thomas, who was a pioneer driver and cars are much featured in her
history. --
This series of photos relates to a French cca
1903 De Dietrich Tonneau, poss the
24HP, registered France late 1904.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1903
Belsize 12HP RE Tonneau
A series of lovely photos received from
Susanna Holt, from Arizona (USA)
great granddaughter of Sir Joseph Beecham of 'Beecham pills', who was
also the father of Sir Thomas Beecham, the famous conductor. Photos
show Sir Joseph and wife Josephine and Susanna's Grandmother Josephine
Boston, pioneer motorist, about whom she is writing a book. --
This series of photos relate to a British cca
1903 Belsize 12hp Rear Entrance Tonneau
with an unusual rear horseshoe scuttle tube radiator.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904
Lanchester 12HP Tourer
Lovely photograph received from Peter Young (Australia)
from an album from his father. Believed
taken in London. He thinks it may be the Colman family (Colman's
Mustard). His great-great grandfather is standing on the doorstep of
the home. --
Revolutionary car with Northern Ireland
numberplate, so possibly not taken in London. The car is a cca
1904 Lanchester 12HP Air Cooled Tourer.
Lanchester went bust 1904, recapitalised. Became BSA/Daimler
'31, Jaguar '60, now Tata.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1905
Mors 30HP RE Tonneau
Interesting photo from a glass negative received from
Peter Artzen (Germany) who
was
searching in the wideness of the
internet and found our site. After going through our Help Pages without
result, perhaps we could help? The plate comes from Tongeren Belgium. --
Car made by a French manufacturer who was one of the first into auto
racing in 1897. Humpy radiator suggests this is a cca 1905 Mors 30HP
Tonneau.
Mors were active in UK and USA. Citroen became MD 1908, bought
Mors 1925.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906
Leon Bollee Touring Limousine
A series of lovely photos received from
Susanna Holt, from Arizona (USA),
the great granddaughter of Sir Joseph Beecham of 'Beecham pills', who
was also the father of Sir Thomas Beecham, the famous conductor.
Susanna is writing a book on her Grandmother Josephine Boston, sister
of Thomas, who was a pioneer driver and cars are much featured in her
history. --
This series of photos relate to a French cca
1906 Leon Bollee Touring Limousine
registered with the Liverpool CBC.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906
Rover 6HP Two-seater
Lovely photo received from Phil Castle (UK)
saying he recently obtained a number of glass photographic
negatives of various subjects, taken in the Devon UK area around 1910.
One of the negatives shows a car which he has tried to identify without
success. -- From
having forward draglink, this is a cca 1906 Rover 6HP Two-seater with
screen and full weather gear. Interesting to note that the off-side
dumbiron is quite bent and that the car has no numberplate. Rover
6 was made 1906-10.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1908
Woseley Siddley Tourer
Another lovely photo received from Tom
Cosens from Yorkshire (UK)
of an old car he didn't recognise. This is from his collection of
postcard curiosities on which he has no other background, but which are
needing identification. --
This one looks very much like a Wolseley made during the Vickers period
that saw the departure of Herbert Austin and the rise to power of JD
Siddeley. As the driver has unusable low door, this would date it to be
a
cca 1908 Wolseley Siddeley Tourer,
possibly the 16'20.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Hotchkiss AD Landaulette
Lovely photo received from Alan
Griffin, past chairman Leamington History Group (UK),
an Edwardian postcard not seen before, possibly member of the
Royal Family at local hospital. Idea of date of vehicle can help in
trawling the local newspaper to find the story to which the photo
relates. --
Circular bonnet with louvers high up and a belt bracket just
visible behind the sidelamp advises this is a cca 1913
Hotchkis AD Landaulette. Probably during WW1. Possibly Queen Mary &
George 5th?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Bedford Buick Touring
Lovely photo received from John
Vistuer (UK), who
asked if we could identify car from a photo taken in
Bideford North Devon.--
Devon reg. Quite an unusual car. American chassis bodied in London.
This is a cca
1913 Bedford Buick Model 31 Touring.
Buicks were exported to UK from 1907 but from 1909 to 1917 Flint USA
chassis were bodied by Bedford Motors, Westminster "to a modified
American design built in England". Initially Bedford then
Bedford-Buick. This is not the Vauxhall 'Bedford'!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Cadillac Model 30 Touring
A series of lovely photos received from
Susanna Holt, from Arizona (USA),
the great granddaughter of Sir Joseph Beecham of 'Beecham pills', who
was also the father of Sir Thomas Beecham, the famous conductor.
Susanna is writing a book on her Grandmother, sister of Thomas,
Josephine Boston a pioneer driver where cars feature in her history. --
This photo is of an American cca
1913 Cadillac Model 30 Six-Passenger Touring,
perhaps car she drove in the 1914 Alpine Trial.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914 Detroiter B1 Roadster
Photograph requiring identification
posted on the PreWarCar website by John saying this is one of three
photos of a car that belonged to his Great-Grandfather. What is it? --
Unusual American car distinguished by the
'Jagger lip' shape of the radiator top. Manufactured in Detroit by the
Briggs-Detroiter Motor Car Company from 1912 to 1917, and being mainly
an assembly operation. This is a cca1914
Detroiter B1 Roadster, 2811cc. Also marketed
in UK where many were sold as Royal Detroiter.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1919
Fiat 505 Torpedo
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Nice to receive a photo from him of a car that was
not made in America! This is an Italian car from Torino
being a cca
1919 FIAT 505 4 door Torpedo. The
505 was made 1919/1925 and was a successor to the 2B, and a bigger
501, having a four cylinder 2296 cc30hp engine capable of 50 mph
(80km/h). |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1921
Crossley Manchester Tourer
A series of lovely photos received from
Susanna Holt, from Arizona (USA),
the great granddaughter of Sir Joseph Beecham of 'Beecham pills', who
was also the father of Sir Thomas Beecham, the famous conductor.
Susanna is writing a book on her Grandmother, sister of Thomas,
Josephine Boston a pioneer driver where cars feature in her history. --
This photo is of a British cca
1921 Crossley Manchester 25'30 Tourer
of an old friend who helped her compete in the 1914 Alpine Trial.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1922
Ford Model T Touring
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Photo was headed 'Ford T 1922' which is exactly what it is, a cca
1922 Ford Model T Three Door Touring. Windscreen is still upright.
Different front styling in 1923. Ts were made 1908 to 1927 and
some 15 million were produced. They were then about 22 HP could do
about 30 mph at 12 miles per US gallon. |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1924
Renault NN Tourer
Series of photos received from Gina Black
(Canada) saying
this could be grandparents' car in North Wales, who had eight children
from 1911-1923. Does this date back to 1910s? Why is there no radiator
grille? -- Not
1910! Car is French and has a distinctive coalscuttle bonnet with
the radiator grille behind the engine, which continued into the '30s.
The scuttle nose defines the make, the round shaped logo that is
pre-1925, registration is Leeds CBC 1924, so c1924
Renault NN Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1928
Auburn 8-88 Phaeton
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Another car from America. The curving bodyline strip on the bonnet
helps, but the people are hiding the back so difficult to say if
it is a phaeton not
roadster. The grill is in two sections so it is post 1927. The
prop shaft is disconnected and hanging lose. This is a
cca 1928 Auburn 8-88, and probably
Phaeton. |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1929 Buick Six Four-Door Tourer
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Another car from America with rad I recognised but could not
place! Our Tony Oakes however did and advised " Buick
1929-ish". In my defence, this new radiator style was indeed
introduced in 1929 and was used for only one year. The name badge
also moved to the rad core (missing on photo !!). |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1930
Morris Oxford Six Saloon
Lovely photograph received from Christine Haworth (UK)
of what
she assumes is the car bought in the 1930s by her Grandfather, but
driven by her mother. He never learnt to drive. It was a type of Morris
Oxford that struggled to get up hills because it was too heavy. It was
registered in Burnley, Lancashire as HG 15. When was it registered ? --
HG is a Burnley County Borough Council issue of late 1930. The car is
therefore a 1930
Morris Oxford Six. Rad badge
was used only 1930/1.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1934
Hanomag Rekord 1.5L Saloon
Recent photo received from Par Sorliden
(Sweden) saying
he recently saw this car in a museum but has no idea what it might be.
The photo was taken at Jesada Technik Museum in Thailand in July 2013.
Maybe we can help? --
Far from home! The main identification feature is missing, the winged
'H' badge which should be on the centre of the radiator. Large
headlamps and no badge bar suggest this is an early German cca
1934 Hanomag Rekord 1.5L Saloon. They
are still making earth-movers.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1936
BMW 328 Roadster
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Photo was headed 'various' which somewhat belittles one of the
contenders in 1999 for the 'Car of the Century'. From the horizontal
grill dividers this looks a very well used, possibly at a wedding,
early cca
1936 BMW 328 Roadster of which
only 464 were made, and one which won the Mille Miglia
of 1940. |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1939
MG TB Sports Roadster
Another batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
This one is a bit blurred and the badge on the radiator seems a
bit wrong, as does the lack of badge bar with starting handle
bracket, as does the starting handle hanging lose. However,
despite these oddities we are relatively sure this is a pre WW2
MG. If so, it is probably a cca
1939 MG TB Sports. |
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1953
Ford Prefect E493A Saloon
Interesting enquiry received from
Gustav Liebenberg (South Africa)
asking us to identify the car.
The photo was taken in Thailand by a friend of his who is standing next
to the car. He has been asking about the car, but this one is old and
modern and Gustav cannot identify it. --
Very interesting description 'old and modern' as this is a much
customised UK cca
1953 Ford Prefect E493A Saloon. The
Prefect bar on the bonnet is removed but has indicators and smoked
glass. Dating from the bumper.

REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE:cca
1959 Surrey 03 Runabout
Small photograph received from
Jim Leighton, from Oregon, Maine, (USA)
saying he owns a Bliss Surrey Serial Number 8582509.
Can anyone share any info as to year and number. It is complete
but the wheels are getting tired. --
The Surrey
'03 was a replica kit car made by
E W Bliss Company, Canton, Ohio, between 1958 and 1959, based on
the 1903 Curved Dash Oldsmobile, with a Cushman scooter engine and
current brakes and lighting. Any help would be appreciated.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Vulcan
Car Mascot
Interesting enquiry received from
Andy Munro (UK)
relating to a car mascot that may be one of the first few years of
Vulcan. The most notable feature on this for dating is the handle of
mallet. Also, was Vulcan the first car manufacturer to use a
mascot? --
There are a number of versions of the Vulcan
mascot, but mascots are a little too
specialised for us. Suggest he contacts a mascot dealer. We can advise
Vulcan introduced mascots after Rolls cca 1911. USA had mascots
1909.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:UNKNOWN
Microcar in Austria
Photograph received from regular
contributor Joao Ferreira (Portugal)
asking for help in identifying this car on behalf of a
friend. The This
photo is showing the late father in law in a mystery
micro car and was taken probably in Austria during the
fifties. -- We
regret that despite considerable searching we have not been able to put
a name to this car. There were many microcars made in the 40s-60s era,
and many were one-offs. Professionally made. Please
now see HP 116 for answer.
