:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION/DATING:  SVVS HELP PAGES have some 3,000 Enquiries Received & Identified

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1898 Mors Dos-a-Dos
Not sure of the origin of photo but well worth sharing on our Help Pages as a vehicle identification aid to automobile historians, found while on the web researching unknown machinery. Can we name make?  --  Quite an unusual model which required the help of our Ariejan Bos to identify. Both cars are same make, made in Paris France, but a few important developmental years apart. This one is cca 1899 Mors Dos-a-Dos. Mors were early and very successfully into racing and world speed records.

1898 Mors Dos-a-Dos

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1903 Daimler 22HP Charabanc
Another puzzling photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) questioning the model of the car. "Bath and Jenolan Caves are in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. Did some research and it seems a 22hp?"  --  Yes indeed. Daimler had reduced their range of cars is 1903 to the 22 HP and similar looking but lighter 14HP. immediate difference is the number of fins on the side mounted radiator 'header' tanks. From the fins this is indeed a cca1903 Daimler 22HP Charabanc.

1903 Daimler 22HP Charabanc

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1905 Phoenix Quadcar
Not sure of the origin of photo but well worth sharing on our Help Pages as a vehicle identification aid to automobile historians, found while on the web researching unknown machinery. Can we name make?  --  Very unusual car but yes indeed, we can name make. We had very recently, on Help Page 119, the same make car but earlier model. Both have in common the two external tower radiators. This is a cca 1905 Phoenix Quadcar using 844cc Fafnir engine, with passenger sitting in a forecar.

1905 Phoenix Quadcar

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1905 Oldsmobile Touring Runabout
Another interesting photograph well worth sharing on our Help Pages as a vehicle identification aid to auto historians, found while surfing the web researching unknown machinery. Can we name make? --  Next car on from the famous Curved Dash Oldsmobile introduced 1901 and 19,000 built. While the 'Curved' was still being built, Oldsmobile built for two years a car relatively similar but more modern looking, a cca 1905 Oldsmobile TR Touring Runabout, Model N, with a 'French Front'.

1905 Oldsmobile TR Touring Runabout, Model N

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1907 Itala 120HP Grand Prix Car
One of a number of high quality interesting photos sent to us by Mike Mackrill (UK) with website called Nostalgic Picture Library."Taken many years ago in the Austin workshops in Newport Isle of Wight a car owned possibly by the Cheverton family. I think its a Fiat with an intriguing annotation on rear which reads" ?.....Peking to Moscow showing what repaired? spoked by the peasants in Serbian desert." --  I think it reads 'Wheel repaired and spoked by the peasants in the Siberian Desert."

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1907 Argyll 14 HP Surrey
Another puzzling photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) questioning the model of the car. "Interesting picture and I was able to zoom into the rear hubcap and make out 'Argyll'. Just need to work out which model?  --  Well spotted. Notable identification features are the three large levers and their positions. Upright scuttle. The bodywork is of c1907 12'14 period but the louvre panel with fewer louvers suggests a smaller engined car, so this is probably cca 1907 Argyll 14 HP Surrey.

c1907 Argyll 14 HP Surrey

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1908 Gregoire 8HP Biplace
One of two interesting photos sent to us by Stuart Rowles, Devon (UK) saying These pictures have just surfaced of Frank Rowles, Chauffeur. --  Registration is Y 870 issued by Somerset County Council August 1908 to W P McBride, Bath. The car is French built in Poissy, Paris. Company started in 1903 making engines, and cars in 1904. Primary identification feature is pear shaped radiator. Represented in UK by Osborn & Lord, London, advised by David Hales as a  cca 1908 Gregoire 8HP Biplace.

1908 Gregoire 8HP Biplace

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1909 Vinot Tourer
Another puzzling photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) questioning the make of the car. Is it a Vinot & Deguingand?  --  Seems quite a puzzle because the radiator is very much of the Vinot & Deguingand form, but the badge with only a "V" is not; normally it would be a bigger V over a Smaller D. This is probably from the offshoot UK/empire agents Vinot Cars of London, also representing Clement-Gladiator cars that V+G were then making in France; perhaps the 16hp.

1909 Vinot Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1911 Armstrong Whitworth Landaulette
Lovely photo received from Dave Henvest, (UK) in old Family album. Gentleman in car could possibly b Great Uncle Alfred Henvest, chauffeur to Barker-Mill family when in residence at Motisfont Abbey.  --  Very unusual car confirmed to our wise sages having unique latching radiator filler cap. London registered, made by major UK aero-armaments-loco company, this is a cca 1911 Armstrong Whitworth Landaulette, 12'14 or 18'22. Was Siddeley Deasy, became Armstrong Siddeley >Rolls-Royce.

1911 Armstrong Whitworth Landaulette

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1911 Mors Tourer
Not sure of the origin of photo but well worth sharing on our Help Pages as a vehicle identification aid to automobile historians, found while on the web researching unknown machinery. Can we name make?  --  Quite an unusual body/weather gear which our Ariejan Bos confirmed as both cars being of the same make, made in Paris France, but quite a few important developmental years apart. This one is a cca 1911 Mors Tourer. Mors were early & successfully into racing/world speed records.

1911 Mors Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1912 Vauxhall Prince Henry Tourer
Another puzzling photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) questioning the make of the car. Is it a Vauxhall Prince Henry?  --  Yes. Three Vauxhall C10s were entered for the Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt named after Prince AW Heinrich of Prussia, held from 1908 to 1911, and a precursor to German Grand Prix. Replicas were built 1911 to 1914, tuned versions of Laurence Pomeroy Vauxhall 20. From flutes this seems to be cca 1912 Vauxhall Prince Henry Tourer 3054cc 60bhp four.

1912 Vauxhall Prince Henry Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1912 Napier 15HP Landaulette
One of two interesting photos sent to us by Stuart Rowles, Devon (UK) saying these pictures have just surfaced of Frank Rowles, Chauffeur. --  Registration is is not visible so no aid to location or date of registration. Primary identification feature is the tall radiator filler cap. Car is British, built by a company started in 1808 in precision engineering. Went into cars 1900. Soon established a number of land/water speed records. Famous WW1 aero engines. This is a cca 1912 Napier 15HP Landaulette.

1912 Napier 15HP Landaulette

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913 Oakland 42 Touring & Roadster
Another interesting photograph well worth sharing on our Help Pages as a vehicle identification aid to auto historians, found while surfing the web researching unknown machinery. Can we name make? --  Quite unusual American car made in Oakland County, in Pontiac, Michigan. Company started 1907 but by 1909 was part of the William Durant General Motors empire. Two models are shown, a cca 1913 Oakland 42 Touring on the left and 1913 Oakland 42 Sociable Roadster on the right.

1913 Oakland 42 Touring & Roadster

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1914 Star Ambulance
Another interesting period photo which was a glass negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) "It has a star emblem to radiator......looks like an ambulance conversion, or maybe a corporation car/van?" -- Interesting to note that no registration is showing yet vehicle looks well used and the radiator is leaking? Made by the then sixth largest UK manufacturer in Wolverhampton, 1897-1932 This is a cca 1914 Star Ambulance. Star had money problems 1928 and became part of neighbour Guy Motors.

1914 Star Ambulance

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1914 Humberette 8hp Two-Seater
Another puzzling photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) questioning the model of the car in the background left. " with the young woman at the wheel - maybe a Humberette?"  --  Yes indeed. Humberette was a name used by Humber Ltd  for range of smaller cars. First was in 1903/05  when it was a 5hp 613cc, then in 1904/05 for 6.5 Royal Humberette, and 1907 for the 7.5 1,419 cc. This one however is cca 1914 Humberette 8hp Two-Seater twin air-cooled,  made 1914-15.

1914 Humberette 8hp Two-Seater

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1915 Briscoe B15 Touring
Another puzzling photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) questioning the model of the car in the foreground right. Briscoe?"  --  Yes indeed. Early Briscoe primary identification feature is the single headlamp built into the top of the radiator. Benjamin Briscoe was US Motor Co, then started Briscoe Freres Paris making the Ajax. Returned WW1 to Jackson Michigan where introduced 'French designed' c1915 Briscoe B15 which became illegal in some states due to one headlamp.

1915 Briscoe B15 Touring

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1917 Titan 10'20 Tractor
Another interesting period photo which was a glass negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) "Don't know if you can help with tractors...if this is what it is? There is a "number plate" [if that's what it is] that I can see which is T1266, Devonshire I believe?  -- Registration too early. This is c1917 Titan 10'20  Tractor petrol/paraffin from International Harvester (formerly Deering) and 1,039 imported during WW1 by the UK Ministry of Munitions to replace UK horses being killed in the trenches abroad.

c1917 Titan 10'20 Tractor by IHC

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably c1920 Walker Electric
Another very frustrating period photo which was a glass negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) "showing a lorry belonging to the BDA...Bradford Dyers Association......can you ID it for me please?"   -- The positive is a bit fuzzy and difficult to see detail. However registration AK 4670 is Bradford County Borough Council post 1909 but much pre 1929. Van looks electric and is probably a cca 1920 Walker of Chicago who supplied the Harrods van before they started making own.

Probably c1920 Walker Electric Delivery Van

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1925 Leyland 3 ton Tipping Lorry
Another difficult period photo which was a glass negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) asking if we can "give more information on the attached tarmac lorry, no reg plate I'm afraid?"   -- The registration number would have helped with year and location. Made by Steam Motor Co which changed name and became public company in 1914 making vehicles for War Office during WW1. This one still has solid tyres so cca 1925 Leyland 3 ton Tipping LorryOriginal photo flipped!

c1925 Leyland 3 ton Tipping Lorry

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1926 Morris Commercial Lorry
Another difficult period photo which was a glass negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) asking if we can "give more information on the Bradford Gas Corporation gas van?"  -- Difficult vehicle to identify, rear three-quarter view of a small truck. Smudged registration so no help in dating. There seems to be no bonnet, which in a way is a help. It means that the bonnet would be thin and dwarfed by the cab. Only five wheel stubs with rounded hub. Likely a cca 1926 Morris Commercial 1T Lorry.

c1926 Morris Commercial Lorry

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927 Austro Daimler AS 20
Cinema screen grab taken from a Czechoslovakian film 'Penicka a Pparaplícko' made in 1971, where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Film is about a street woman and two safe-breakers, one found dead floating in the Vltava. Can we name make? --  The circular bumper is certainly eyecatching but the primary identification feature is the radiator. This is a rapid response fire engine based on a car chassis of a cca 1927 Austro Daimler AS 20 car powered by 6cylinder 2994cc 100hp

1927 Austro Daimler AS 20 Fire Engine

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1927 Austin 20'6 Ambulance
Another difficult period photo which was a glass negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) asking if we can "give more information on the attached Keighley Ambulance. Is it an Austin?"   -- The script on the radiator reds Austin Six so it is either the 16 or the larger 20, similar looking. Our Tony Oakes suggests that given the size of the body, probably the rarer and larger 20 is more likely. As most passenger cars had wire wheels rather than artilleries, probably a commercial variant.

c1927 Austin 20'6 Ambulance

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1931 Leyland Six Ton Lorry
Another difficult period photo which was a glass negative from Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) asking if we can "give more information on the attached Leyland livestock wagon pleases?"   -- The registration advised of MB 7799 was issued by Chester County Council in 1925. However the short snout bonnet with three louvres, and a single rear axle suggests a cca 1931 Leyland Six Ton Lorry. Earlier lorries of that pattern seem to have had had solid tyres. Perhaps a transferred plate from earlier one.

cca 1931 Leyland Six Ton Lorry

DENTIFICATION AND DATING:PERHAPS c1950 Ferrari 166 Inter
Another puzzling photo received from regular contributor Joao Ferreira (Portugal) of car waiting to cross railway line in Lisbon, taken with a cellphone from a picture hanging on the wall of a coffee shop. Fiat with body by Farina but no matching grille? --  Quite fuzzy photo of only part of front, but we agree it could be bodied by Stabilimenti Farina, probably not Fiat but  but could be a cca 1950 Ferrari 166 Inter Sports. All 37 sports/coupes were coachbuilt by most of famous coachbuilders.

PERHAPS c1950 Ferrari 166 Inter
