AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1901 De Dion-Bouton Double Phaeton
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make of vehicle photographed in Sydney Australia c 1907.
Postcard features John and Thomas Hoyle in Dulwich Hill, Sydney, NSW.
Suggested a possible Darracq or De Dion. -- De Dion features. Our
Ariejan Bos confirms it is a cca
1901 De Dion-Bouton 8hp Double Phaeton.
These mudguards were normally used
for the Tonneau; so customer choice??

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1903
Peugeot Type 42 Double Phaeton
Our friend and regular contributor Joao Ferreira (Portugal)
commented on enquiry received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
and shown on our Help Page 193 by confirming the car was Peugeot, taken
in Lisbon. in 1903. He has the photo labeled as
"Peugeot 18HP Rear Entrance Tonneau 1903, Avenida da Liberdade".
We had identified is as a cca 1903 Peugeot Type 42.
It was made only in 1903 and had a 4 cylinder engine of 3,635cc.
Apparently only some 79 cars of this type were built.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1904 Panhard & Levassor Ambulance
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make of vehicle photographed in Knightsbridge London. --
Very interesting vehicle because it is one of the earliest Animal
Ambulances in front of a Veterinary Surgeon's practice in the very posh
part of town. Cannot read Vets name but the car seems a cca
1904 Panhard & Levassor, probably
the 8hp, specially bodied Ambulance with a pony passenger.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1905
Humber 16'20 Beeston Tourer
Interesting photo received from Ivan (Croatia)
asking if we can identify the make of this car in this slightly
damaged picture. -- Primary point that sticks out
at first glance is that the headlamps are set very high, that the car
is quite low slung and that the wheels indicate the car is American.
First high lamp suspect us a Hupmobile, and closer investigation of the
tall filler cap and the all-covering coned rear wheel hub confirm this
is c1913
Hupmobile 32 Touring from Detroit
Michigan.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1905
Humber 16'20 Beeston Tourer
Interesting photo from Frank and Robyn Lewis (Australia) whose
house in Castlemaine was home to a David Thompson, who had owned two
Beeston Humbers. This photo came with the house. Thompson initially
owned a Beeston 10'12, and later in October 1905 he ordered a 4 cyl
16-20. Can we advise which this is ? -- Humber
had a factory in Beeston until 1908 when all moved to the Coventry
works. Identifying feature of the 'better' 1905
Humber 16'20 Beeston is the curved
dash.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906
Delaunay Belleville Tourer
Another puzzling photo received from our Member, actor and auto
historian Nicholas Young (UK) of the door-stopper encyclopedia 'Car
Number Classics' detailing histories of original cars/owners of the
first registrations issued in UK. -- Sir Thomas
Lipton taken in Columbo City Ceylon (Sri Lanka) where he owned vast tea
plantations. Car perhaps 1906 Cotterau? -- Regret no, from the
tell-tale filler cap and round radiator is
c1906
Delaunay Belleville 25HP Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1909 Daimler 38HP Tourer
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make of vehicle. -– Lovely photo of
Fifth Avenue in New York showing a number of vehicles and horse drawn
carts. Primary enquiry is about the vehicle foreground left
which is a cca
1909
Daimler Tourer, probably the 38HP.
Daimler started using Knight Sleeve valve engines in 1909 on their 22,
38 and 48 models to quieten their cars. Popular 38 was made 1909-14.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1909 De Dion Bouton Open Top Bus
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make of vehicle. -– Lovely photo of
Fifth Avenue in New York showing a number of vehicles. It is
interesting to note that on the far left is an open top double decker
bus of French origin. This is one of 67 De
Dion Bouton supplied chassis bodied in
Philadelphia by tram makers J G Brill for Fifth Avenue
Coach Co between 1907-1910. (See more info of DDB Busses).

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1910
Stanley Steamer Touring
Another puzzling photo from the late Desmond Peacock (UK)
collection asking for information on the make of vehicle. --
Bathtub type bonnet with louvres, full wheel enclosing mudguards, and
part of the name helpfully displayed on it. This is an American cca
1910 Stanley Steamer Touring, probably
the Model 61 with removable rear seating. For Stanley history in some
depth see their use on the Kennon
Road in the Philippines before
replacement by De Dion Bouton due high water use.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1910
Reanult AG Taxi de la Marne
Another puzzling photo received from our Member, actor and auto
historian Nicholas Young (UK) of the door-stopper encyclopedia 'Car
Number Classics' detailing histories of original cars/owners of the
first registrations issued UK. -- This photo of a
Renault AG Taxi was taken in Paris 1910. Interesting story of how these
little taxis and the lumbering slow Schneider and De Dion Bouton busses
of the day took French troops in 1914 to fight in trenches of WW1
front. READ MORE HISTORY.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1911 Delaunay Belleville HB6 Tourer
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make of vehicle photographed in 1915 Katoomba, near Sydney,
Australia. This one suggested as French or English --
French. Recognisable pointed water filler cap and from the fully
enclosed bodywork and saddle petrol tank, it is a cca
1911 Delaunay Belleville, and from the
length of bonnet, probably HB6. Looks bit too old for the similat
later IA model.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1912 Unic Landaulette Taxi
Another interesting puzzling photo from a
forum of car photos asking for information on the make of vehicle
identified as an Argyll operating in Ipswich in c1921. Origin of
postcard appears to be Pamlin Prints.
-- No history on this photo apart from
knowing it is widely available. We can however advise that the car is
not a Scottish Argyll, but from the characteristic saddle petrol tank
and flat rad it is a East Suffolk registered French cca
1912 Unic Landaulette, likely a 12'14, as a Taxi.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1909 Singer 12'14 Landaulette
Another interesting puzzling photo from a forum of car photos
asking for information on the make of vehicle identified as an Argyll
but is actually a French cca 1912 Unic and operating in Ipswich in
c1921 (above). Origin of photo appears to be Pamlin Prints. --Vehicle
to the right of the Unic has a square frame/circular matrix rad which
advises a British latest
cca 1909 Singer 12'14 Landaulette which
normally used a White & Poppe engine. Other rad Singer cars used an
Aster engine.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1914 Ford Model T Taxi
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make of vehicle. -– - Lovely photo of
Fifth Avenue in New York showing a number of vehicles. It is
interesting to note that in left middle is a cca
1914 Ford Model T Taxi, as has
two-part rad matrix. The Model T was introduced in 1908 and this bonnet
has square edges so vehicle is pre 1916. Taxi visions of the Model T
were introduced as early as 1910.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1915 Overland 80 Tourer
Another puzzling photo from late Desmond Peacock
(UK) collection asking for information on the make of vehicle operating as the Signal
Corps Air-Raid Warning Car in Regent's Park, London WW1, advising of
Zeppelins or Goetha Bombers. -- Photo is widely
seen on ternet but the car remains unidentified. Registration is
Zetland, Scotland, 1904, a transferred 'cherished number' because this
is a cca
1915 Overland 80 Tourer with Kempshall
non-slip profiled tyres. READ

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1925
Chenard & Walcker Cabriolet
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make of vehicle. British, perhaps Humber? --
Not like any Humber in the catalogue but we were advised by our Humber
Man Tony Oakes that this is a cca
1927 Humber 9'20, which was one of
their smaller cars, but that this one was clad in a Weyman Saloon
body, which has fabric over wooden frame to save
weight. Subsequent picture search confirmed.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1926 Chrysler B70 Four Door Sedan
Interesting photo received from Malachy McMichael (Northern
Ireland) a screengrab of a car from an early 1930s cine reel he would
appreciate being identified, even if only the make. Northern Ireland so
British. -- Actually no, car is from Detroit,
America, a cca
1926 Chrysler B70 Four Door Sedan.
Walter Chrysler bought Maxwell Company and Chalmers. The six cylinder
B70 was their first model, which had Willys origins, and was followed
two years later by the G70, which is visually quite similar.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1926 Leyland A1 2 Ton Lorry
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand)from a forum of old photos and
asking for information on the make of vehicle photographed in New
Zealand. Numberplate suggests 1929'30 issue. --
Noticeable pointers to the Leyland model seem to be the logo shape,
small radiator with a support plate with number holes in, metal spoked
wheels and solid tyres, all suggesting this is likely a c1926
Leyland A1 2 Ton Lorry. Their bigger
lorries had bigger radiators.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1920s Commerce Van
Further to above enquiry from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) we have noted that there is
another lorry to the left of the picture with a very interesting
‘V’ shaped logo which we recognised but couldn’t place. Mark
advised the logo was from an American Truck made by Commerce
Motor Car Co of Detroit, Michigan,
1911-23, and later 1927-32 by Relay Motors of Wabash, Indiana.
Difficult to tell the type, smallish, probably 3/4 ton van, cca 1920,
with the new rad/logo, rounded mudguards.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1927 Renault NN Torpedo
Cinema screen grab from French TV Series "Arsene Lupin"
made 1971 to 1974 where the cars are being investigated by IMCDB. The
Series was based on Maurice Leblanc's gentleman master thief Arsène
Lupin who was featured in over 50 stories starting in 1905.--
Car is French, medium size, no front grille, still has a coalscuttle
bonnet in the 1920s, so is a Renault. The Renault Logo changed from
round to diamond shape in 1926 so post 1926, indicating this is a
cca 1927 Renault NN Torpedo.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1928 Morris Minor Fabric Saloon
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK) seems to be on the
lookout for photos of unusual cars, and wondered if we knew what this
one was? -- The radiator is behind a 'winter
warmer'. Half of this car is an enigma even when the other half is
mirror cloned-on because it continues to look like a
cca 1928 Morris
Minor Fabric Saloon with an Essex MM numberplate, low headlights,
winglets on the rad filler, starter handle below bodywork ... - but
then what is with the strange pointed wings?

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1930 Leyland COE Five Ton Lorry
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make of vehicle photographed in New Zealand. Numberplate
suggests 1951'6 issue. -- Noticeable pointers to
the Leyland model seem to be the logo shape, small radiator with a
support plate with number holes in, which suggests a much
modified cca
1930 Leyland COE Five Ton (cab over
engine) Lorry, rather than a similar age Lion Bus, which was also COE.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1934 Peugeot 301 Berline
Cinema screen grab from French TV Series "Arsene Lupin"
made 1971 to 1974 where the cars are being investigated by IMCDB. The
Series was based on Maurice Leblanc's gentleman master thief Arsène
Lupin who was featured in over 50 stories starting in 1905.--
French, medioum size, shield logo on slightly angled radiator with
descriptive bit missing, this is a cca
1934 Peugeot 301 Berline, four seater,
four cylinder 1,464 cc, 36 Hp, capable of 100kph, marginally
aerodynamic.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1959
Deutsch-Bonnet HBR5 Coupe
Another interesting puzzling photo from a forum of car photos asking
for information on the make of vehicle. Origin of photo apparently
France. -- This is quite an unusual French car, a
cca
1959 Deutsch-Bonnet HBR5 Coupe made in
the Champigny suburb of Paris between 1937 and 1962. Charles Deutsch's
family coachwork business making car bodies since 1900 was bought by
Rene Bonnet resulting in making lightweight racing cars and sports
coupe cars. READ

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
2003 Saddam Hussain's Car Collection
Couple of amusing photos received from
Alex Richards, Perth (Australia) of
two veteran cars reportedly belonging to Saddam Hussein. These pictures
from a Press Agency were taken during the Iraq war of 2003 by US
soldiers when one of his palaces was raided with many other cars stolen
or destroyed. The green car is described as a 1917
Mercedes Benz and the details of the
red vehicle are unknown. Both are
modern replicas, likely electric buggies. READ
