The SVVS Website currently receives
approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year order:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1899 De Dion Bouton 3.5hp
Vis-a-vis
Another fascinating photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
This photo was titled 'Rare car in Cluj, Romania'. Cluj is the second
city and the capital of Transylvania. Our Rory Sinclair advises this is
a French cca
1899 De Dion Bouton 3.5hp
Type D or E with the addition of a spoon brake. The event is unknown to
us but there is a small monkey sitting on the steering bar.

Easthope (New Zealand) who
is the Honorary Archivist in the capital's Wellington Hospital. Photos
were taken between 1917/18. Could we identify the make & model.

wheels. This is a cca 1911 Daimler 15

FIAT 501Torpedo
Another fascinating photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Nice
to see another non-American car in his collection. This one was made in
Torino Italy by Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. This is a cca1924 FIAT
501 Torpedo. 501s were the first car made after WW1, from
1919 to 1926 1460cc in three power ranges 23/27/30 HP, and over 47,000

1925 Sizaire Freres 11CV
Another fascinating photograph from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Difficult one this. Very Rollsy bonnet and rad, but the mascot wrong
and hubs are all wrong. Does not fit any of the American imitators.
Left with the French Sizaire. Sizaire Freres and Sizaire Berwick had
Rollsy rads. Five louvres suggest pre WW1 but hubs suggest post.
Probably cca1925
Sizaire Freres 11CV.

writing about early Modernist architects
taking photographs of buildings with automobiles in front of them.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927
Austin 12'4 Mulliner Drophead
Rather blurry period photo sent to us by
Liz Jones (Holland) one
of only five of her Grandfather. He died in WWII in a POW camp aged 45
in 1943. Photo may have been taken in the UK, but he was stationed in
various places. Probably taken around 1935 onwards. She has one picture
a lot younger and two in Africa in 1942 with no hair. So this one is
likely in between. --
Our Mark Dawber advises this car is a cca
1927 Austin 12'4 Mulliner Drophead Coupe.
Cannot help with date / location.

better as "Le Corbusier", who became French. Our info is that car is

Wanderer W11 10'50 Saloon
Interesting photograph posted on a (German)
website Hubler.de "For friends of classic cars " featuring photos of old
cars and motorcycles, many which have not been identified. Marked
"fiat plakettenfahrt". --
Not an Italian Fiat, but a German car which started as Winklhofer &
Jaenicke in 1896 in Chemnitz. In 1911 they chose the name Wanderer for
their export models but soon adopted the name overall. This is the 6
cylinder 2.5L cca1929

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1929
Morris Cowley Saloon
Another photograph from Philip Clarke (UK),
this one showing
the Market Place in Diss, Norfolk, which
he is trying to date. He was told it was taken in the mid 1920s, but
suspects that it may be a little later, possibly the early to mid
1930s. --
We asked for a higher resolution photo to try and date the registration
but still did not help. A number of our experts seem to agree that it is a
cca 1929 Morris Cowley
Saloon. Therefore, the photo is not likely mid
1920s, - so probably is mid 1930s.

Looks like a Volksvagen Beetle but has a Mercedes star, so has to be cca

is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this vehicle photoed in
the USSR after the end of World War II ? --
Looks like two German cars
probably sequestrated by the Russian army.
The car on the left looks very much like a cca 1936 Wanderer W35 Saloon

Trumph Saloon made in Frankfurt. Both have had radiator
badges and logos removed.

1938 Citroen 11B Traction Avant
Number of interesting photos sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who
is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this vehicle photoed in
the USSR after the end of World War II ?
-- My immediate thought was that it is
not what it looks like, a Citroen. A look at other similar cars,
and further investigation however determined from the wheels, chrome
strip on door etc that it indeed it is a cca
1938 Citroen 11B Traction Avant Cabriolet.
The nosegrille seems period aftermarket.

American car frequently used by US Police and Military authorities.
This is a cca 1957 Chevrolet 150 Four Door

Noticeable by the lack of the Dagmar rubber bumper guards ;
(Dagmar being well endowed actress!)

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1959 Buick LeSabre Four Door Sedan
Number of interesting photos sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who
is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this vehicle photoed in
Egypt or perhaps another Middle east country ? --
From the flags it does seem as if this procession of cars is indeed in
Egypt. This would seem to be a support car further down the parade. The
car was identified by or Mark Dawber as a
cca 1959-60 Buick LeSabre Four Door Sedan.
All the cars in the parade seem pre/around 1961 so photo 1962?

1961 Cadillac Fleetwood 75 Limousine
Number of interesting photos sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who
is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this vehicle photoed in
Egypt or perhaps another Middle east country ? --
American car frequently used as a ceremonial/presidential car in many
countries. This is a cca
1961 Cadillac series 75 Limousine.
Egypts's President Nasser used/had Cadillacs but it seems
possibly not this one? Friend President Tito of Yugoslavia had
similar car but that was a
convertible.

1961 Cadillac & 1958 Chevrolet
Number of interesting photos sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who

Egypt or perhaps another Middle east country ? --
American car frequently used as a ceremonial car in many
countries of the world. This is a cca

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Unidentified
c1930 Saloon?
Another photograph from Dr. Christopher
Wilson, Architecture and Design Historian, Ringling College, Sarasota (USA),
writing about early Modernist architects
taking photographs of their buildings with automobiles in front of
them. What is this one? --
Not entirely sure! The photo is marked "Corbusier 1927 Voisin
hardtop". Building is Villa Stein-de-Monzie, Garches, Paris. Not a
Voisin as it looks a quite 'norma'l car. Does not seem a Citroen nor
seemingly Mercedes. Looks possibly a Fiat.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Unidentified
Statuette/Mascot?
Couple of interesting photos sent to us by Glenn Hewlett of Cape
Paterson, Victoria, (Australia) requesting
advice if it is a car mascot. Made of cast zinc (?) but painted to look
like bronze. The statue itself is solid metal, but the boat shaped base
is hollow. -- UK
mascot specialist doubts this is a motor car mascot. The finish looks
domestic and not weather friendly, and is probably Spelter base metal.
Possibly the top of a French or German clock, or perhaps a garniture to
a clock or statue.
