IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1897 Benz Velo
Derek Oakensen (UK)
is currently compiling a catalogue
of exhibits for the Old Police Cells Museum at Brighton Town Hall.
Attached is a photo an early motor car said to have been the first in
Eastbourne. Passenger is Harry Plumb, the Chief Constable of Eastbourne
from 1893 to 1900. The car was not a police car as such; Eastbourne
Watch Committee did not commence buying motor transport till some years
later. --
Our Bryan Goodman who owns similar car thinks it is a cca
1897 Benz Velo.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1900 Protographer's Prop
Very interesting damaged period photo submitted by
Mrs. Margaret Bernard
(UK) saying she is
sending this picture of her grandmother taken in Aberdour, Fife, at the
turn of the century. She would like to know the name of the car and the
year of manufacture. --
We regret we cannot help with either because this is not a real car but
a Photographers
Prop made from painted scenery, like others
on the Help Pages. I have however repaired photo, as I think
it is rather nice.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1903 Stoewer 20 HP Tonneau
Another of a number of very interesting
photos submitted by Jan Lundin
(Sweden). -- Our
correspondents Rory Sinclair and Lennart Haajanen both agree that
this car is a 1903 Stoewer 20HP Tonneau from Germany. '... the mansard
type of bonnet seems typical. Appears a Rear-entrance Tonneau
having seats in the front corners. Seems not to be chain driven. The
letter P in the registration means a fairly large part of Swedish west
coast north of Gothenburg centering on Älvsborg'.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1910 Napier Tourer
Another interesting cinema screen grab of a
vehicle which appeared in a 1925 film "The Lost World" being
investigated on IMCDB. This was a silent film and was adaptation of
Arthur Conan Doyle's book of the same name featuring a brontosaurus
marauding down London's River Thames. -- The
car featured in this scene is a cca
1910 Napier Tourer. the famous Napier
claim to fame was initially manufacturing gun and bullet making
machinery, as well as printers for stamps and banknotes.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1912 Kelsey Motorette
Another unusual photo submitted by
'Grandpa'
(USA) showing a three
wheeled vehicle in California. This was an updated version of an
Auto-Tri car first made in 1898 by C W Kelsey. Motorette
had a 7hp 2 cylinder 2-stroke engine built by Lycoming. Vehicles
were exported including to Japan for where they were made as rickshaws.
Engines full of sand put there by disgruntled striking workers damaged
the reputation. Attempt to revive was by trans USA run but company
lasted 1910-14, 210 made.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1912 International Harvester
Damaged photo submitted by Darlene of Elk
Grove Township in Lafayette County, Wisconsin
(USA) showing her
father and friend. It seems they saw the car and asked to be
photographed in it. -- I
had a go at repairing the photo which had been damaged by sticky tape.
The car is a
cca 1912 International Harvester Motorwagon and
was a "high wheeler" type of vehicle made in the USA.
International Harvester Co. became world famous
for their tractors and agricultural
machinery.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1914 Opel Tourer perhaps
Our correspondent Fer Cools (Holland)
has sent us a curious photo of a car that had belonged to a director
of one of the local coalmines. The town is near German border, and
director lived in Germany. The license plate is Dutch from the province
of Limburg. --
Little lamps below the headlamps suggest
Germany/Austria/Italy. Austro-Fiat? Headlamp position is most
unusual; poss later, quite an "American" feature. Our
expert Tim Harding has suggested that it is "probably" a
cca
1914 Opel.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1921 Peerlesss Truck
Smashing posed photo
received from H Hodgetts (UK)
advising that the man at the front is his Great Uncle James Knight. The
truck was bought army surplus after WW1 and was used on a daily contract
to take logs from Windsor railway to a tile kiln in Winkfield Row, and
to deliver fresh cut carnations to Southampton docks for the
transatlantic liners. Truck was scrapped in the 1950's. --
Registration says spring 1921 and our friends at the AACA advised a
Peerless. Therefore a cca
1921 Peerless.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1921 Franklin Brougham
Another interesting cinema screen grab of a
vehicle which appeared in a 1925 film "The Lost World" being investigated on IMCDB.
This was a silent film and was adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's book
of the same name featuring a brontosaurus marauding down London's River
Thames.
-- The
car featured in this scene is a cca 1921 Franklin Brougham. The film was
made in the USA and so was the Franklin. Longest lasting air cooled car
make in the USA, later with dummy rads.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1923 Cleveland Tourer
Another of a number of very interesting
photos submitted by Jan Lundin
(Sweden) showing vehicles in the 20s and 30s
Scandinavia, for which he is seeking identification and dating.
-- Jan has
habit of unearthing unusual cars and this is no exception. This is an
American
cca
1923 Cleveland Tourer manufactured in
Cleveland Ohio by Cleveland Automobile Co. This eventually became part
of the Chandler-Cleveland Corporation and offering cheaper cars, while
using the Chandler engine.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1923 Essex Touring
Photograph received from Paul Weller who
advised that it had been received on his WW2 forum website asking for
identification and dating. The bonnet ornament is quite striking but he
has not been able to place it. Any ideas? --
The registration plate reads MF which is
Middlesex County Council, and number 1188,
mid 1923. Car is therefore a 1923
Essex Touring Phaeton. Essex were made
by the US Hudson. Sidelights on mudguard suggest UK built
car from factory in N. London.

|
ORIENTATION OF PHOTO: cca
1924 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost
Interesting photo posted by 'Grandpa' (USA)
in standard or mirrored orientation asking for year of manufacture and
coachbuilder. Our friends at AACA have determined that the body is
probably Brewster. -- We can advise that
when the 'Silver Lady' is much enlarged and sharpened it seems that Miss
Thornton's left leg is forward of her right, making the mirrored photo,
right, probably correct. On my car the left leg is
distinctly forward but variants of Spirit of
Ecstasy were made.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1925 Durkopp Tourer
Another of a number of very interesting
photos submitted by Jan Lundin
(Sweden) showing vehicles in the 20s and 30s
Scandinavia, for which he is seeking identification and dating. Jan has
habit of finding unusual photos and this is no exception. The
cars are parked in the middle of a lake on ice! -- This
photo has done the rounds and it is now thought that this is a cca 1925 Durkopp
Tourer. Shortage of photos of Durkopp
cars during this period has made identification quite
difficult.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1925 Praga Lorry
Another interesting cinema screen grab of a
vehicle which appeared in a 1979 film "All Quiet on the Western
Front" and in the 1992 film "The Young Indiana Jones
Chronicles" being investigated on IMCDB. Our
(New Zealand)
correspondent Mark Dawber suggested that it may be a De Dion.
-- As
both films appear to have been made in Czechoslovakia, we think this is
a slightly modernised cca 1925 Praga Lorry. Praga were mainly
a car manufacturer and at the time they were the largest in
CS.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1925 Voisin Coupe de Ville
Another interesting cinema screen grab of a
car which appeared in a 1929 film "El misterio de la Puerta del
Sol" being investigated on IMCDB. Our
(New Zealand)
correspondent Mark Dawber suggested that it may be a Citroen
-- We
agree that this is a French car but much more 'exotic' as it
carries the famous 'Cocotte' mascot designed by Gabriel Voisin. Mascot
started as a joke but buyers clamored for them so it reluctantly became
standard. The car is cca
1925 Voisin Coupe de Ville.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1931 DKW F1 Cabriolet
Another of a number of very interesting
photos submitted by Jan Lundin
(Sweden) showing vehicles in the 20s and 30s
Scandinavia, for which he is seeking identification and dating. Jan has
habit of finding unusual photos. --
Love the flying helmets, suggesting Germanic origin. The car is in fact
a German cca
1931 DKW F1 Cabriolet. The 'F' denoted
it was a front wheel drive car, and fitted with a two cylinder
600cc two stroke engine, transversely mounted. Some 250,000
made.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1933 Fiat Balilla Saloon
Photo received from Rod McLean
(Australia) asking
identification of a Fiat that his Father has owned for some time
and is considering selling. They don't know age or model. Thought to be
1928, but heard differing opinions. Have more photos of the interior if
required. Father does have the engine from the vehicle; it is "in
the shed!". --
Relatively sure this the smaller brother of the 522, a
cca 1933 Fiat Balilla Saloon. Badge
dates year. Regret little value rebuilt UK, about £8,000. Not sure in
Oz?

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1939 Adler Trumph Junior
Another cinema screen grab of a
vehicle which appeared in a film "Három szabólegények" being investigated on
IMCDB.
This was a film made in Hungary in 1982.
-- The
car featured in this scene is a cca
1939 Adler Trumph Junior Cabriolet.
Adler started in the bicycle business by importing American machines.
Adler was in at the start of the German motor industry supplying wire wheels
to pioneer cars being developed by Karl Benz and
Gottlieb Daimler. Recently famous for typewriters.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1945 Pokora Special
Interesting car photographed by Hugh (USA)
at a meeting in America some 10 years ago. He had forgotten what
it was. --
The registration plate reads EWX 459 which is a UK issue. The car was
registered in September 1949 in the West Riding of Yorkshire as a POKORA.
It is apparently still in existence, but off the road. Engine is given
as 3499cc. The Indian head mascot is a GUY lorry mascot with Guy
Motors cut off. The badge appears to have letters PS,- Pokora Special
perhaps.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1951 Opel Olympia Coach
Photo taken by Bob Pank (UK)
on the island of Corfu not far from the
ferry docks in 2008, who was interested to find out what it was.
--
We can advise that the car has a German origin and that it is a cca
1951 Opel Olympia Coach. There
were three incarnations of the Olympia model:1935 to 1940, 1947 to 1953
and 1967 to 1970. The first use of the Olympia name was to celebrate the
1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Opel started in 1898 with bicycles
and became part of US GM in 1931.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1953 Studebaker Starliner
Photo received from Brian Irving of
East Sussex (UK) saying
this car was in a field in North Carolina alongside a couple of
1970's Dodge saloons. The 3 pointed star looks like an upside down
Mercedes emblem. Any idea what it is? --
Some say that in the USA this car is considered as much of a design icon
as the E type was in UK. The car is a cca 1953 Studebaker
Commander Starliner. The logo was replaced
because Mercedes complained. Became a stylized
winged 8, as fitted with a V8.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1957 Austin FX3 London Taxi
Photo received from Debbi (USA)
who is thinking about buying this 1957 Austin to restore. She would like
to know the model. She believes that it is a 4 door, although the left
front door is apparently missing.
--We can advise that
this is a 1957
Austin FX3 London Taxi. Some 13,000
were made 1948 to 1958. RHD, it has no passenger door because all London
taxis had an open space beside the driver for passenger luggage. A
good condition example is now being sold in US for
$8,500.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1959 Autobianchi Bianchina Coupe
Photo submitted by Samantha
(USA) showing her
grandfather Lawrence Thomas, who died recently, with this car in
approximately 1960. No one seems to be able to figure out what the car
is. -- We
can advise that in view of the three chrome strips at the rear this car
is a cca 1959 Autobianchi Bianchina Fiat 500 Transformabile Coupe.
Company was co-owned by Fiat and Pirelli and made microcars from the mid
50s to late 60s. Vespa cars were similar in shape but no connection.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1965 Lotus 11
Series of photos received from Bruce
Fenster (USA)
taken at a race meeting in Laguna Seca, California, in 1965. There are
four he can no longer recognise. Make and model would be great. Others
can be seen on his website at http://www.netfenster.com/
. -- Our race-car expert Michel
Gosset came back immediately saying that cars number 13 and 16 were
Lotus 11. Designed by Colin Chapman, Lotus 11 was the last to
be designed as a racing car that could also be legally
used on the road.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: cca
1980s Candia Transporter
Photo taken on the tiny Greek Island of
Paxos by yours truly (UK) and
thought to have been home made, but then came across a couple of other
wrecks with the name 'Candia' just visible. Seems thousands of Candia
Transporters were made in Crete and
other Greek Islands by little agricultural workshops during the 1970/80s
but were obsolete by the 1990s. Grossly over-engineered, but guess if
stuck for months between gale lashed boats to the mainland in winter, -
things must last.

PHOTOS NOT YET IDENTIFIED:
YOUR
H E L P IS NEEDED PLEASE !
As can be seen from our Help Pages we
normally do succeed in identifying practically all vehicle photos which
we receive. Occasionally some photos may take time and very occasionally
we get stuck. Clicking on the photo
on the right opens the page
containing some photos we are yet to crack ! Any
help would be very much appreciated.
