:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION/DATING:   SVVS HELP PAGES EXCEED 2,000 Enquiries Received and Identified

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1902 Gladiator 10HP Tonneau
Our member David Smart (UK) who regularly partakes in the London to Brighton Veteran Run with his 1904 Cadillac, bought his daughter a birthday card which had this picture on. Any ideas what the car was?
--  Two of our experts agree a Gladiator. One advised it is probably a cca 1902 Gladiator 10HP Tonneau twin cylinder once registered U130 (now re-registered), used by a Leeds scrapyard c1930 displayed over the entrance to premises supported on scaffolding poles to attract custom.

Probably c1902 Gladiator 10HP Tonneau

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904 Beaufort Side Entrance Tonneau
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK) found this
in a box of very old photos. Listed as a "Petrol Autocar"...any ideas? -- Magnificent looking vehicle but no ideas. Contacted our Ariejan Bos who is into obscure early autos and he advised it was a cca 1904 Beaufort Side Entrance Tonneau. Research reveals actually a German made car, some by Argus of Baden, and sold by a British capitalised company in London, some bodied in UK. Comprehensive range of big cars, taxis and commercials.

1904 Beaufort Side Entrance Tonneau

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1907 Mercedes Double Phaeton
Lovely period photo posted on the Rootschat website by Alichi (UK) asking for help to date photo of Lady Farrar at Chicheley Hall claimed as 1915. He is keen to prove this in earlier times before George Farrar's death in May 1915. -- Earlier! Car is cca 1907 Mercedes Double Phaeton. Chain drive suggests the lager model, probably the 45hp. Interesting to note the AA badge without wing so pre 1911. Registration is just visible as L 9##? being Glamorgan CC, Wales. L900 would have been late 1907.

1907 Mercedes Double Phaeton

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1908 Brasier Ambulance
Cinema screen grab taken from a French documentary series "Apocalypse, la Première Guerre mondiale"  (Apocalypse, World War I) made in 2014 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. From 500 hours of cinematographic archives, often unpublished and colored.  -- This fascinating triple decked open air Ambulance was made on chassis of French car made in Paris by Richard-Brasier started 1902. G. Richard left to form Unic. This is a cca 1908 Brasier, poss 24HP. Closed 1930/1.

1908 Brasier Ambulance

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1909 Daimler Tourer
Stereoscopic photo received from Peter Blair (UK) claimed to be of Andrew Carnegie on tour - he came to Scotland every year from 1880s to 1914. Very small photo, but any chance of identification or at least earliest possible date.  -- Very blurry with runny colours. Carnegie was a Scottish American steel industrialist 1835-1919, one of the richest Americans ever! Car seems fitting and looks a chain drive  cca 1908/9  Daimler  Tourer,  poss 38 HP.  Chain drive was discontinued soon after.

1909 Daimler Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1910 Piccolo 12'14 Doppelphaeton
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what the cars is?  -- The car is German and was made by A. Ruppe & Sohn in Apolda near Leipzig, making initially the Apoldiana motorcycles and then  the Apollo and Piccolo cars, and successful in racing. This is a cca 1910 Piccolo 12'14 Doppel-phaeton, 4 cylinder. Amalgamated MAF (Ruppe), stopped cars in 1926.

910 Piccolo 12'14 Doppelphaeton

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1914 Daimler CC Van
Very pixly photo received from Rui Alves (Portugal) asking if it is possible to identify the vehicle in the picture?  -- The photo has been over-sharpened when scanned so although apparently good quality, it is not possible to see detail to provide positive identification. Notwitstanding, we are relatively sure this a cca 1914 Daimler CC Van. Update on the Y, the CC and CB Daimlers were built in great quantities during WW1, with Daimler pioneering the use of lorry pneumatic tyres.

Probably c1914 Daimler CC Van

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1914 Le Zebre Type C
Cinema screen grab taken from a Norwegian documentary series "Filmavisen" where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Made by Norwegian Film AS and produced weekly to be screened in cinemas in 1941 - 1963. During war used by Nazis as propaganda.  -- Car was made in Puteaux, France by company founded by Jules Salomon (later Citroen), designer Joseph Lamy (later Amilcar) and part financed by Jacques Bizet, son of composer. This car is a cca 1914 Le Zebre Type C.

1914 Le Zebre Type C

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1915 Indian 'Little Twin' 680cc
Very indistinct photo (enhanced) posted on PreWarCar website by Alan Douglas (UK) saying that before the first world war his father bought this motorcycle in North Wales which perhaps had a sidecar. Last four letters look like 'Lion'. Registration is F - 257.  -- Some hesitation on registration as would be Essex, but pre 1905? Motorcycle is American and initally looked the 1000cc V2. Further research suggests it could be the smaller brother, cca 1915 Indian 'Little Twin' 680 cc 5HP Vee Twin.

1915 Indian 'Little Twin' 680cc

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1917 Burford Lorries
Lovely period photo received from Geoff Clay, Wirrai (UK) asking for help with identifying the make of veteran cars on this postcard, attached. The cars on the right look like they are being lined up for sale. He suspects it was a car park for the Mersey ferries. -- Lorries could be WW1 supplies awaiting shipment to the front. Mike Sutcliffe suggests they are cca 1917 Burford Lorries. They made 1 and 2 ton versions, also supplied to the Red Cross of many countries,  and also busses to GWR.

1917 Burford Lorries

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1918 Oakland 34B Roadster
Photo received from Gerard B. Rickey (UK) taken at country restaurant outside Copenhagen, Denmark by Brodr Riemson, Fotografen. The driver is Alexander Lundsteen, his brother-in-law Alex's father. Alex's mother is in the rumble seat (driver side). Mother thought it to be a Packard, but some doubts.  -- Not a Packard. Made by company started by owner of Pontiac Buggy Co, taken over by Durant's General Motors in 1909. This is a cca 1918 Oakland 34B Roadster, 41HP 2900cc 6 cylinder.

1918 Oakland 34B Roadster

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1919 Vauxhall Model D Tourer
Another photograph received from Philip Clarke (UK) saying' You have been kind enough to date several photographs for me in the past by identifying the vehicle, and I now have another one. On this occasion, though, it has "taken at Diss Station on 26th August 1928" written on the back, so I'm just curious to know what the car is? -- Registration not fully clear, but could be V 4638, is from Scotland, Lanark CC. The car is cca 1919 Vauxhall Model D Tourer.  Many supplied to  British Army.

1919 Vauxhall Model D Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1926 Angus Sanderson 14HP Tourer
Slightly distorted photo-of-a-photo received from Nick Lovell (UK) asking for help with identifying the make of the car registered in London in 1926. Photo shows his grandparents and since his mother is not in it, he assumes taken before 1932, possibly in Llandudno.  -- Registerd in May 1926, this is a rather unusual car made in a Hendon ex-aircraft factory by a coachbuilding company founded 1789. This is a cca 1926 Angus Sanderson 14HP Tourer designed by C. Kimber of later MG fame.

1926 Angus Sanderson 14HP Tourer

Cinema screen grab taken from a Norwegian documentary series "Filmavisen" where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. A 600cc two-stroke, two cylinder cca 1928 DKW P15 Two-seater with a coachbuilt body.

1928 DKW P15 Two-seater

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1930 Austin 7 Meteor Special?
Puzzling photo received from Stan Allen (Australia) asking if anyone can help to identify the make and model of the vehicle in a scan from old B&W photo. Family curiosity, Perth, Australia.  -- Difficult one here, but consensus there is an Austin 7 based Special. Late A7 wheels and a transverse front spring. The rad shell similar to A7 Meteor but taller. Austin Sevens were bodied in Oz 1924-1934 by Holden and others, Meteor built by several companies including A. Robinson Co. in Sydney.

c1930 Austin 7 Meteor Special?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1932 Peugeot 301 T Camionnette
Cinema screen grab taken from a British television series "Wish Me Luck"  made in 1988/90 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Second world war experiences of brave women recruited as undercover agents behind enemy lines.   -- Looks a well used French commercial vehicle which had seen better times. Headlamps are mounted high so this would be a cca 1932 Peugeot 301 T Camionnette. 301 range of cars were made 1932-36;  70,000 made. Commercial version had taller cab.

1932 Peugeot 301 T Camionnette

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1934 Humber 12 Vogue Saloon
Lovely photo received from Ray Viney (UK) taken in 1966 in the car park in front of the Civic Centre in Newport, Monmouthshire, of what appears to be a 1930's coupe. Despite research online I am unable to identify the make or model.  -- Not a common model but a well known make. Oval badge and flat grille suggest this is a cca 1934 Humber 12 Vogue Pillarless Saloon. Humber merged with Hillman (car on right), both became Rootes in 1931,  and Chrysler 1967.  Last Humber in 1976.

1934 Humber 12 Vogue Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1934 Humber 12 Sports Tourer
Rather dark photo received from Richard Whittlesea (UK) of his friend's mother, now deceased, in her own car as a young woman. Friend has no internet and asked if Richard could help with identification, so assistance would be greatly appreciated!  -- Received just after the enquiry above and is even less common model of the same make. Oval badge and flat grille suggest another cca 1934 Humber 12, but this one is the rarer Humber 12 Sports Tourer with steeply raked 'sports' doors.

1934 Humber 12 Sports Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1935 Ford Model C Two Door Saloon
Lovely photo received from Justin Sulima (Australia) of a Mosquito bomber crew from 305 SQN (Polish) June 1944 to December 1944. The man standing is his father (navigator) and seated is the pilot.
The right headlight has some sort of cover on it? -- The cover on the light is a WW2 wartime 'blackout cover' with a horizontal slot facing downward, with perhaps other lights disabled. The car is a British cca 1935 Ford Model C Two Door Saloon with a 10 horsepower, 1.2L sidevalve four.

1935 Ford Model C Two Door Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1938 Citroen Traction Pick-up
Cinema screen grab taken from an American comedy film "The Twelve Chairs" made in 1970 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Directed by Mel Brooks and is an adaptation of the 1928 Russian novel about family fortune hidden in one of twelve chairs sequestrated by the Bolsheviks.  -- Interesting vehicle and one of many that were converted during/post WW2 from tired Traction saloons into camionnettes and pickups. This is cca 1938 Citroen Traction with very homebuilt rear half.

1938 Citroen Traction Pick-up

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1939 Chrysler by Pourtout
Photo received from Bruno Costers (Belgium) saying an oldtimer friend asked if this 1939 Chrysler (??) has a coachbuild body. It was last seen in Belgium, during the 60s. Further information about the Chrysler is missing. Maybe you can help us.  -- Quite a difficult one. The base car does indeed seem to be a cca 1939 Chrysler. It has circular badge on the side of the front of the bonnet, only 1939. Has direction trafficator. Found picture of similar smaller body by French C. Pourtout in Bougival.

1939 Chrysler by Pourtout

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1939 DKW F8 Meisterklasse Saloon
One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify the car in fragment of a post-WW2 photo showing Soviet Army officers with a captured vehicle ? -- German car made in Zwickau which became Eastern Germany. Pre-war it was Dampf-Kraft-Wagen and post war it was
Automobilwerke Zwickau. This is the updated front wheel drive F7 which became cca 1939 DKW F8 Meisterklasse Limousine,  later IFA F8.

1939 DKW F8 Meisterklasse Limousine

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1949 Vauxhall Velox Saloon
Colourful local photo received from Arko Bose (India) of "a car rusting in Bolpur in West Bengal. It appears to be 1950s-1970s era maybe, it maybe older,  I wish to purchase this car and pursue it as a custom project for a friend. Hoping you can identify this. I am merely 20 yrs. old."  -- British car with flutes on the bonnet, identifying it as a cca 1949 Vauxhall Velox LIP Saloon. A Series 1 six cylinder car, otherwise shared the same body  with the  four cylinder Wyvern.  Both made 1948-1951.

1949 Vauxhall Velox Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1950s Bentley R-Type Saloon
Photo received from Luqman from Hydrebad Decan (India) asking if we can tell him what type of Bentley is shown on the photo.  -- Numberplate is not visible so not possible to date or say what country. It is however a early 1950s Bentley R-Type 4.6 Standard Steel Saloon. 2323 built between 1952-1955 in Crewe, United Kingdom. 101.7 mph (163.7 km/h) 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 13.25 seconds. A fuel consumption of 15.5 miles per gall.  Similar to Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn.

1950s Bentley R-Type Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1965 Wolseley 24'80 Saloon
Photo posted on AACA website by Maxim Zanfir (USA) saying he has this picture of an old abandoned car found in Australia. Looks like a British car from the Post-War period but he cannot identify it. Any help would be appreciated.   -- Bit like Facel Vega but  indeed a British car, a cca 1960 Wolseley 15'60 Mk I Saloon. However further digging revealed that British Motor Corporation (Australia) made 1962-1967 the  Australian built Wolseley 24/80  variant of 15/60,  with BMC B-Series 6.
