:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1900
Fuillaron 3.5HP Tonneau
Apparently Puzzling photo posted on a forum of old photos
asking for identification of vehicle. --
We have covered this vehicle before which was a 'photographers prop'. Similar
to the Italian Ceirano and French Corre, Fouillaron and Renault.
No known connection with Ceirano, but Fuillaroin and Corre were joint
directors of a company making quads but also selling Renaults. All
almost identical so this could well be a Fouillaron-Corre
badged 1900 Renault 3.5HP Type C, De
Dion engined.

White Model C Steamer
Lovely photo received from our Member auto historian Nicholas Young (UK)
who wrote the door-stopper encyclopedia 'Car Number Classics' detailing
histories of original cars/owners of first registrations issued 1904
UK. -- Registration
AU 12 is Nottingham CBC starting Dec 1903. The car is shown in the encyclopedia
but remained unidentified and unlinked to anybody. We can advise the
make is an American White Sewing Machine Co's cca
1903 White Steamer Model C Tonneau, no
roof.

Fuillaron 6HP Limousine
Another interesting coincidence prompted by photo received
from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) following
the Fouillaron item further up on this page, he sent the attached,
questioning if a Fouillaron? --
- Yes indeed, it is a cca
1904 Fouillaron 6HP Type G Limousine
made by a cycle shop owner from Angers who went on to develop a
pulleyed transmission system and went into car manufacture to 1914.
Photographed in Jonchery-s-Vesle near Reims, northern France beside
wine wholesaler.

Another old photo received from Charlie Seavey (USA)
asking for identification. --
One of the oldies, product of the
second defunct 1901 'Henry Ford Co' in Detroit USA. After Ford
departure reorganised by Henry Leland in 1902 into the Cadillac
Automobile Co (named after founder of Detroit). This is a cca
1904 Cadillac Model B1 'Rear Entrance Tonneau'
(a bolt on feature), single cylinder engine 6.5HP 1609cc under seat,
chain drive and transverse front spring, dummy bonnet at time.

18HP Napier Tourer
Lovely photo received from our Member, actor and auto historian
Nicholas Young
(UK)
who wrote the door-stopper encyclopaedia 'Car
Number Classics' detailing histories of original cars/owners of the
first registrations issued in UK in early 1904.
--
AW 6 is a Salop CC (Shropshire) registration
which started December 1903. The car is in the encyclopedia but car and
owner have remained unidentified. We can advise, confirmed by Ariejan
Bos, this is a cca
1904 18HP Napier Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: NOT
a 1908 Marta Phaeton
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew
what this one was? He recently visited Romania for the blessing of the
wedding his son Philip to Arina who hailed from the Romanian town of
Arad. The wedding was blessed in Arad cathedral. While in Arad, Tony
saw this photo. -- The
connection of the car to Arad is not obvious as this is a cca
1905 Gardner-Serpollet 18hp Type L Steamer with
Tulip Phaeton Coachwork. Read

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1905
Richard-Brasier 16HP Surrey
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for
identification. --
Lovely picture but nothing immediately obvious. Ariejan Bos advised
this is a Brasier, from the Richard-Brasier period, so would be 1905 or
older; a
cca 1905
Richard-Brasier 16HP Surrey. Main features are the
very broad (deep) radiator, the low and very broad rad filler tube and
the slightly tilted louvres. The centre ridge on the bonnet is not easy
to see from side.

Lovely photo received from our Member, actor and auto historian
Nicholas Young
(UK)
who wrote the door-stopper encyclopaedia 'Car
Number Classics' detailing histories of original cars/owners of the
first registrations issued in UK in early 1904.
--
AU 1 is a Nottingham CBC December 1903 but put on
later on this unusual car advised by Ariejan Bos as a cca
1905 Leader which belonged to
lace-making factory owner William Dowson, who was married to a
'suffragette'. Read

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906
Singer 9HP Tri-Car Forecar
Glass negative from our Singer man
Simon Bishop (UK)
named as a Phoenix, which he doubted. Can
we do a positive and identify vehicle. --
Right is negative to enhanced photograph. Not a Phoenix with circular
rads, but cca 1906 Singer 9HP Tri-Car Forecar
with two rectangular
tower radiators, which followed the 1905 5HP Tri-Car version without
the rads, after the 1904 5HP Motorcycle forecar, and 1902 Trivoiturette
with seats at back, backwards and engine within front wheel.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906
Packard Model N Runabout
Another old photo received from Charlie Seavey (USA)
asking if we have any ideas on this one taken 1900'1910 probably in the
USA. -- This looks
very much like the vehicle in the photo below.
The car has no front dumbirons so transverse spring and has pointed scallops
to the radiator so is again is from a
company founded by James Packard in 1899 in Warren Ohio. This is a
Detroit made cca
1906 Packard Model N Runabout Two-Seater
possibly with Dickey, four-cylinder rated at 28HP.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906
Packard N Runabout
Another old photo received from Charlie Seavey (USA)
received later asking for identification. --
Another photo of probably same
previous car and driver, with familiar visible lack of front dumbirons
so would be a Detroit made cca
1906 Packard Model N Runabout Two-Seater
possibly with Dickey, four-cylinder rated at 28HP. Company was started
by Packard Brothers in 1899 in Warren Ohio after their suggestions to
Winton to improve his cars were ignored with: 'Go build your own car
!'.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906
Packard Model N Tonneau
Lovely old photo received from Charlie Seavey (USA)
saying "Folks tell me you are the go-to for old car ID", so
any ideas on this one taken in 1906 in Magnolia, Massachusetts. --
Magnolia is a rocky coastal part of Manchester-by-the-Sea near Boston.
The car has no front dumbirons so transverse spring and is from a
company founded by James Packard in 1899 in Warren Ohio. This is a
Detroit made cca
1906 Packard Model N Double Side Entrance Tonneau
four-cylinder rated at 28HP, at $3,500.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Replica
c1906 Columbia Victoria
Cinema screen grab taken from Hong Kong film " A gai wak 2 "
(Project A Part II) made 1987 where cars are being investigated by
IMCDB. Story about district police head, gangsters, revolutionaries,
runaway pirates etc. -- Despite
fair bit of researching we have not been able to determine the
manufacturer of vehicle in photo but this is a relatively good modern
replica of a Cleveland Ohio cca 1906 Columbia Victoria Electric Phaeton
probably made by Chinese electric 'fantasy' car maker.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1908
Elmore Roadster
Another old photo received from Charlie Seavey (USA)
asking for identification. --
Not a Packard, but our Mark Dawber
suggests this is a cca
1908 Elmore Roadster from
Clyde, Ohio, established in 1893-1912 by H V Becker who started with
bicycles. Initially mid-engine, this one was front engine with a 3.1L
three cylinder 'valve less' 2-stroke engine of 24 HP. 1,000 cars per
year from 200 workers. Bought by General Motors in 1909 but due GM's
early financial problems was closed 1912.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1908
Buick Model 10 Touring
Another interesting photo posted on a forum of old photos
asking for identification of the vehicle. Buick 10 suggested. --
From what we can see indeed a cca
1908 Buick Model 10 2,703cc four,
introduced in 1908 and made to 1910 during which time 23,000 were made,
then costing about $900 excluding canopy. Started by plumber David
Buick who patented enamelling baths, but left 1908. William Durant
gained control and Buick company became the founding member of General
Motors.

Talbot 35HP Tourer
Couple of lovely photos received from Anthony Richards (UK)
on behalf of Liz Goddard whose Grandfather is shown in a car he had at
Rhyander in mid-Wales when he had The Oak Hotel. Second photo is same
car at Severn Arms at nearby Penybont, which he bought in 1920. Clement
Talbot? --
Nearly. Clement-Talbot was a British company
initially selling French Clement Bayard cars. Dropped Clement name
1905. From the size of bonnet, likely a cca
1909 Talbot 35HP Roi des Belges Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1914
Darracq V14 16CV Torpedo
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for ID. Lorries are
Packards but what is the car? -- At
a distance a white badge with dark centre suggests French Berliet and
Cottin Desguttes but the radiator shape and the scuttle petrol filler
cap suggests this is Darracq made during the British management of the
company by Owen Clegg, ex Rover, who helped to introduce the cca
1914 Darracq V14 16CV Torpedo, and
smaller 12HP.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1922
Citroen Model C 5CV
Another lovely photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from a
forum of old photos. -- Mark
knew this would not be a dfficult one for me because I am an owner of
the slightly later Cabriolet version of the same car. This one is a cca
1922'3 Citroen Model C 5CV C2 T2
Tourer. Our French Member Michel Gosset and I have been translating
Bernard Laurent excellent detailed books on the history of the very
first Citroen cars built in Paris in early 1920s, the Citroen 5HP and
Citroen 10HP.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1922
Citroen Model C Torpedo
Another interesting photo posted on a forum of old photos
asking for identification of the vehicle. No other info. --
Having a similar vehicle, this is
obviously a Citroen, a
cca 1922/3 Citroen Model C 5HP
short wheelbase
Tourer (May '22 - Sept '23) , but it is showing some very rarely seen
original equipment on these cars, the "all weather
protection" side window curtains. Normally Tourers have a vast
open driver's area, subject to being windy and wet. On Cabriolet, all
enclosed.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1922
Renault 10HP Landaulette Taxi
Another interesting photo posted on a forum of old photos asking for
identification of the vehicle. Suggested
Theophile Schneider? -- Confirmed
by our Ariejan Bos that this is a Taxi of the type used by Compagnie
Française des Automobiles de Place, sometimes called G7, which
had earlier helped to boost the fortunes of Renault. Still with
conventional coal bonnet, rear rad, but a streamlined curved dash
radiator, says this is cca 1922 Renault Taxi
which started as a 10HP
GS.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1926
Renault 6CV Fourgon
Another interesting photo posted on a forum of old photos asking for
identification of the vehicle. -- Photo
seems from Hungary of a Chocolate delivery vehicle. The primary
identification feature is the coal scuttle bonnet, which possibly
suggests Renault. and is confirmed by the rear located gill louvres,
rather than a front grille. Seven louvres, open drive for the
chauffeur, no bumper or infill below rad, curved rather than profiled
wheels, all pointing to c1926
Renault 6CV Fourgon.

Another interesting photo posted on a forum of old photos asking for
identification of the vehicle. -- To
UK readers, an Austin, but as left-hand-drive, an American
'Metropolitan'. Designed by Nash Kelvinator of Kenosha, Wisconsin, as a
subcompact ladies' car. All 95,000 were made in UK by Austin of
Longbrige starting 1954 and morphing to series 4 by 1961. Available in
USA as Nash Metropolitan and later as Hudson Metropolitan and then AMC
Metropolitan; in UK as

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1970 Subaru 360 Saloon
Cinema screen grab taken from Japanese TV Series "Jinzô ningen
Kikaidâ" made 1972-73 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB.
Story about a transforming super-android, on the run from an evil
organization, fights its rampaging robot monsters etc. --
New to me, a Subary
360 Saloon two door 1958-71. Named
'Ladybug' it complied to Japanese Kei microcar regs to motorise the
post WW2 population. It had a 356cc two-cylinder two-stroke transverse
air cooled engine 16HP.

Husstler Kit-car
Another interesting photo posted on a forum of old photos
asking for identification of a car. -- This

Aston Martin Lagonda. It was designed for Jensen Special Products but
was not taken us so made by William Town's own company Interstyl 1979

Unknown Pick-up
Puzzling photo received from Mate Pap- of a veteran pickup in Budapest
Hungary believed photographed in the 1930s. --
Very difficult one as no contrast to lighten for
details. Immediate impression is of a cca 1910 European car converted
to a pick-up but quality suggests built as pickup, but not as lorry.
Many French manufacturers had similar rads including Darracq, Peougeot,
Vinot. Aries, etc etc . Front wheel looks bit American but not rad
apart few like Peerless. Regret
no ID. Need
