::
The SVVS Website currently receives
approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year order:

Ford Model T Touring
One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who
is a collector of old photos. Can we identify the this European
vehicle? The photo was taken somewhere in the USSR in late 1920s. -- Not
sure if European made because the design is American. Most of car is
hidden so dating is difficult but no demountable wheels so this is a

Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
found this photo on a friend's Facebook page....any ideas...possibly
Morris? -- Rather
poor photo but does indeed seem to be cca 1925/6 Bullnose Morris
Roadster but difficult to tell if Oxford or Cowley. Our Morris Man Chas
Moody advised certainly a cca

wheelbase (8'-6") fr mudguards curved, Oxfords (9'-0")
end slopes down at about 45deg.

Whippet 96 Roadster
Another couple of photos received from Tom
Cosens from Yorkshire (UK)
of old cars he didn't recognise on a poscard originating in Spain. This
one appears to have been rather comprehensively crushed by a tree. --
Guessing from the numberplate and that car had sidelights, and size of tree,
that the location may well be Antipodean, although the car is American.
Our Mark Dawber correctly pointed out it is a cca
1928 Willys-Overland Whippet 96 Roadster,
and the body may well be local.

Opel Cabriolet
Another photo received from our regular
contributor Raoul
Rainer from Stuttgart (Germany) from
a batch of photos he purchased recently and has on a big website on line.
A German-registered car, but possibly not of German manufacture. The
bumper looks more American than German? -- Despite
the external stone guard on the radiator, we think it is German and
are relatively sure this is a cca 1930/1 Opel Cabriolet, 1.8L or

Commer Centaur 2-Ton Lorry
Interesting period photo received from
regular contributor Bill Stothard of the Cudworth Local History Group (UK) asking
if we can again help with this photo? Sure is a Commer Centaur,
taken earlier than 1935 because later spot was occupied by pair of
semi detached houses where his brother and he were born. -- He is
right, indeed a West Riding of Yorkshire registered 1932
Commer Centaur Two-Ton Lorry.
Commercial Cars became Humber 1926, who became Roots 1931.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:

GAZ M20 Pobeda Saloon
One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who
is a collector of old photos. Can we identify the car in this photo
taken USSR in 1960s of Marshal of the Soviet Union arriving at military
garrison? A ZIM? -- Russian
car but not a ZIM. This is a cca

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unknown
post 1920 Charabancs
Part of a photo received from Robin Daly (UK)
taken in Broadmoor in Surrey, dated 1925.
The two vehicles seem to be charabancs - this was a very popular day
trip for Londoners. Can we confirm this and say anything about them? --
Photo is too small to ascertain any details re make. Indeed large
charabancs on pneumatic tyres, fold down roof and stepped angled
seating. This would suggest that they are post 1922/3. Converted WW1
(1914-18+) lorry busses / charabancs had solid tyres.
