[ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ]
::
The SVVS Website currently receives
approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,
cars are in year order:

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1906
Straker Squire Omnibus
A photo received from Geoff Procter,
Wiltshire (UK)
asking if we can help to identify this further? It was from a collection
of photos owned by James (Jim) Thomas (1891-1955) of Lewisham/Bermondsey
who ran a car hire business just after WWI. -- Quite
a difficult one. The
vehicle registration was issued by West Ham CBC. Enquiry passed to Mike
Sutcliffe who positively identified it as a cca
1906 Straker Squire possibly with a
Hora body, of Great Eastern London Motor Omnibus Co.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1907
Napier 60 HP Tourer
Photo from Daryl Foster,
Victoria BC, (Canada) featured
on a number of websites citing 'HD Reids automobile at Cabot Tower
Signal Hill St Johns Newfoundland'. Any idea of make his
car. -- Number of
our experts agree this is a cca 1907 Napier 60 HP
Tourer, as has 19
louvers. Some discussion if made in Acton London or Boston Mass.
Probably UK. Tower marks Queen
Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897, and 400th anniversary of John
Cabot's landfall in 1497. 1st transatlantic wireless transmission.

Leyland S 25cwt Box Van
Another photo received from Geoff Procter,
Wiltshire (UK)
asking if we can help to identify? It was from a collection
of photos owned by James (Jim) Thomas (1891-1955) of Lewisham/Bermondsey
who ran a car hire business just after WWI. --
Thought we would check with the Leyland expert Mike Sutcliffe who
confirmed cca
1910 Leyland S 25cwt with S.24hp
engine ("L" heads), one of 13 or 14 built in 1910 for the
Royal Mails contract, registered B 2207-19 (or 2220) - this one seems B
2214.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1913
Lancia Theta Torpedo
A photo received from Christine Haworth,
Lancashire (UK)
carried in wallet of family member, but not known why. Man went
from Lancashire to Australia in 1911 but father stayed in England.
Dating could clarify if it is grandfather. Building apparently not Sydney.
--
Architecture seems not British. Radiator shape of header being thinner
than body, Rushmore acetylene headlight, and the badge logo suggests
this is a cca
1913 Lancia Theta Torpedo. The
car behind it is a cca 1911 Daimler.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1913 Wolseley 24'30hp
Landaulette
A photo received from Geoff Procter,
Wiltshire (UK)
asking if we can help to identify this? It was from a collection
of photos owned by James (Jim) Thomas (1891-1955) of Lewisham/Bermondsey
who ran a car hire business just after WWI. --
Bespoke coachwork, and bonnet is hidden, which does not help
identification. Two experts agree from the bonnet shape and the
wheelhubs that this was made by the then biggest British car maker and
is a cca
1913 Wolseley 24'30HP Open-drive Landaulette.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1914
Singer Ten Two-Seater
A photo received from Mark Caudwell (UK)
saying 'what a brilliant site you have got! I am enclosing some
pictures of my grandfather Charles C Caudwell in his car outside his
Suttonwick House home near Abingdon. Is it an 8'10 Humber Two
Seater, as this was mentioned on a 1911 farm sale bill? --
No, probably its replacement as this is a little bit more recent and a
different make. It has rounded mudguards and has later electric
lighting. This is WW1
cca 1914 Singer Ten Two-Seater, post
war.

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1914
Dennis Subsidy Class A Lorry
Another photo received from Geoff Procter,
Wiltshire (UK)
asking if we can help to identify? It was from a collection
of photos owned by James (Jim) Thomas (1891-1955) of Lewisham/Bermondsey
who ran a car hire business just after WWI. --
Thought we would run this one past Leyland expert Mike Sutcliffe who
advised this is a WW1
Dennis Subsidy Class A lorry, 3 ton,
belonging to the War Office and made by Dennis Brothers of Guildford.
One of about 7,000, also used by US troops WW1.

Arrol-Johnson 15.9 HP Tourer
A photo received from Mark Caudwell (UK)
saying 'what a brilliant site you have got! I am enclosing some
pictures of my grandfather Charles Caudwell in the various cars he
owned, location being near his Abingdon home. -- Thought
this may be a Sunbeam but various details were inconsistent. One of our
'smug' experts then advised that it is a rather more unusual Scottish
car made in Paisley (1896-1931). This is a cca
1921 Arrol-Johnson 15.9 HP Tourer.
Merged to be Arrol Aster in 1927.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1925 FIAT 501 Spider
Interesting family photo being
investigated by George Layton (Thailand),
relating to his family in the UK. He is trying to establish the
location and the date of the photo. --
We cannot help with the location as no specific details visible. The
registration TT 1282, is Devon County Council issue of June 1924 to
October 1926. The car is a sporting two-seater of Italian origin and
possibly British body. It is a cca
1925 FIAT 501 Spider. As to when
the photo taken; car looks shiny so not too old!

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1925
Voisin Model C5 Skiff
Another from a batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Looked French but confused by being RHD, British style sidelights
and knock-on hubs. Advised by one of our sages this is a cca
1925 Voisin C5 Four Seater Skiff.
The C5 was made 1923 - 27, was
called the 18/90hp here and capacity was 3969cc (95x140mm),
fast car with bizarre paintwork. |

Studebaker Big 6 EQ Berline
Another photo received from Geoff Procter,
Wiltshire (UK)
asking if we can help to identify? It was from a collection
of photos owned by James (Jim) Thomas (1891-1955) of Lewisham/Bermondsey
who ran a car hire business just after WWI. --
This is another photo of the Jim Thomas 'beloved Studebaker' which we
identified on our Help
Page 59 as a cca
1925 Special Six Berline. Here it seems
to be at an event that generated much rubbish, possibly the Epsom
Derby, next to the car shown below.

Studebaker Big 6 EP Berline
Another photo received from Geoff Procter,
Wiltshire (UK)
asking if we can help to identify? It was from a collection
of photos owned by James (Jim) Thomas (1891-1955) of Lewisham/Bermondsey
who ran a car hire business just after WWI. --
It was previously mentioned that Jim Thomas had a 'beloved 1910
Studebaker' which we identified on our Help
Page 59 as a 1925 Special Six Berline.
Our Mark Dawber advised this as c1926
Studebaker Big 6 Model EP 7-pass Inside Drive Limousine.

Vauxhall 14'40 Princeton Tourer
A photo received from Mark Caudwell (UK)
saying 'what a brilliant site you have got! I am enclosing some
pictures of my grandfather Charles Caudwell in the various cars he
owned, location being near his Abingdon home. --
The 'flutes' along the bonnet help to pinpoint the make and are said to
originate from a detail of a wardrobe. The maker was in the marine
business in 1857 and built its first car in 1903. This is a cca
1927 Vauxhall 14'40 Princeton Tourer.
Became General Motors 1925. Current!

Renault Vivastella PG4 Saloon
Another from a batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? -- French but confused by being RHD.
This is a Renault, post scuttle bonnet period with a grille at the
front but the rad still at the back. The radiator slats are
vertical rather than horisontal which signifies this is a
cca 1930 Renault 16CV Vivastella PG4 Saloon;
made in various forms 1929-1939. |

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1930
Buick 46 Business Coupe
Another from a batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? -- Another
American, this one made by a company started by a Scotsman, David
Dunbar Buick, in 1899, who sold the company in 1903 and died
poor. Company became Buick division of General Motors. This is a cca
1930 Buick 46 Business Coupe,
which seems to have a much later rear body. |

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1930
Armstrong Siddeley 12'6 Tourer
Another photo received from Mark Caudwell (UK)
saying 'what a brilliant site you have got! Father's cousin Molly
Finch went out to India, had a wonderful time, married a District
Commissioner. Had a Singer. We have this picture of a car getting stuck
in the mud. At outbreak of WW2 came back to UK, and eventually went off
to California with a GI ! --
This car certainly seems in Indian mud but it is not the Singer. It is
another quality British car, a cca
1930 Armstrong Siddeley 12'6 Tourer .

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:1930
Humber 16'50 Weyman Coupe
A photo received from Mark Caudwell (UK)
saying 'what a brilliant site you have got! I am enclosing some
pictures of my grandfather Charles C Caudwell in the various cars he
owned, location being near his home in Abingdon. --
RX 6226 is a Berkshire County Council registration which dates this car
as a late cca
1930 Humber 16'50 Weyman Coupe. Humber started with bicycles
1868, into forecars in 1898, into four wheelers in 1901. Humber bought
Hillman in 1928, was Roots in 1932, later Chrysler.

Studebaker Commander Sedan
Another photo received from Mark Caudwell (UK)
saying 'what a brilliant site you have got! I am enclosing some
pictures, this of an unknown friend coming shooting to the Grange
Drayton Berkshire (now Oxfordshire) Probably 1939 Studebaker ? -- Right
make, wrong year, or perhaps just the year the car was actually
photographed. This is indeed a Studebaker, but a cca
1934 Studebaker Commander Sedan, made
in South Bend Indiana or perhaps for export in Walkeville Canada.

Singer Nine Deluxe Sports Coupe
Another photo received from Mark Caudwell (UK)
saying 'what a brilliant site you have got ! Father's cousin
Molly Finch went out to India, had a wonderful time, married a District

WW2 came back to UK, and eventually went off to California with a GI ! -- Indeed
a Singer, a cca
1935 Singer Nine Deluxe Sports Coupe.
They started in 1901 making mototrikes. Became Roots Bros
'56, then Chrysler Corp '64, -died 1970.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1936
Ford Model Y Tudor Saloon
Photo from 'Peter Chapman (Spain)
taken in Birmingham UK, not sure if pre or post war but of the late
30's or 40's. From a batch of photo belonging to his grandmother. Could
be great uncle Joseph Simnett. DVLA cannot help from just a license
plate. --
Registration is Birmingham CBC March 1936. Four windows so car is a 1936
Ford Model Y Tudor Saloon. 153,00 of
these were made in the UK 1932 to 1937, costing £100. Also made in
Germany. Note the demister on windscreen.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1936
Nash Lafayette Sedan
Photo from Roger De Coite (South
Africa?)
saying 'Herewith a photo of an unidentified car. Can you assist? It is
friend's fathers car. Was first car in Slanghoek which is close to
Worcester in Western Cape, South Africa.
--
Two of our experts agree this is a 1936
Nash Lafayette. Quite unusual as
this style of grille and bonnet louvre was only made for only few
months. Lafayette had been a maker of expensive cars but when absorbed
by Nash discontinued, & name later for Nash economy range.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1937 Dodge Series D5 Touring Sedan
Lovely family photo received from Don
George, Edmonton, Alberta (Canada).
The vehicle was apparently left in the trees on his son's property and
appears to have been there for a long time. He was curious as to the
make and year of the car. --
Although quite bent and disfigured, the half of the grille that can be
seen is indicative of the make, as is the sideways mounted headlamp.
The shape of apertures above grille confirm it. This is a cca1937 Dodge Series D5 Touring
Sedan.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1952
Armstrong Siddeley Whitley
Photo from 'Numa' (Switzerland)
saying the SVVS site " .. is
beautiful! Here is to identify a car, it has been registered in Geneva,
Switzerland ". --
Car made in Britain with a quality pedigree. Started in 1866 as
Siddeley, became Wolseley Siddeley 1905, then Siddeley Deasy 1909, and
in 1919 Armstrong Siddeley. Made quality luxury cars, a bit expensive.
From single piece radiator grille this is a cca 1952 Armstrong Siddeley
Whitley Saloon. Taken over by Rolls Royce, ended cars
1960.

DATING:UNKNOWN
1920 Luxury Tourer
Another from a batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Nice to receive a photo from him of a car that was
not made in America! However who made it remains
a mystery; none of our experts have been able to nail it
positively. Teutonic lamps. Main contenders are post WW1 early Ehrhardt-Szawe,
or similar date but French Sizaire
Berwick. |

IDENTIFICATION AND
DATING:PERHAPS
1912/13 Mercedes
Another from a batch of fascinating photographs from our
regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania)
who is interested in old cars of Romania. Do we know what
this is? --
Not really! Very blurry photo which hides most of the detail. The
body looks a little Teutonic so we looked closely at Mercedes,
Benz and Stoewer. Then noticed
detachable wheelrims which suggested American, perhaps
Cadillac. Some thought Stoewer
was close, and some Mercedes.
