The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK) found this photo in one of his boxes of old snaps and he has no idea of what the vehicle is? -- cca 1896 Pennington Autocar by American Edward Joel Pennington and built in Harry Lawsons Great Horseless Carriage Co in Coventry Motor Mills. Chassis by Humber. Apparently capable of carrying nine people, four transverse saddles, it had a 1871cc two cylinder uncooled engine controlled from rear seat but front passenger could steer if necessary!

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1898 Daimler Canstatt AR2
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK) found this photo in one of his boxes of old snaps and as he has absolutely no idea of what the vehicle is, thought it would be a real crackers for identification on the Help Pages
-- This one is relatively easy as it is a well known model and also a well known car.  From the registration we can tell it is the cca 1898 Daimler Canstatt AR2 that is part of the collection at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in UK. Two cylinder, 16mph, 1,525cc, new £340.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904 Brushmobile 6HP 2 Seater
Interesting Email received from Robert Wade (UK) saying that the 1904 Brushmobile 6HP which has already appeared on these page a few times:  HP41   HP96  and  HP99 also apparently appeared in a 1966 episode of the Harry Worth comedy programme on UK TV, now on YouTube. -- And sure enough HS 25 is indeed on screen for most of the programme, story being that Harry went to pick up a parcel left at a parcel office as inheritance from his uncle. Side start procedure shown.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904 Brushmobile 6HP 2 Seater
In view of the above enquiry I looked on the internet for photos of the car when it was featured in the 1966 British film " Carry on Screaming". The film is a  send-up of Hammer Horror and the Frankenstein genre.  -- This is a 1904 Brushmobile 6HP 2 Seater which had been found near Bristol and rebuilt by the Montague Motor Museum, and run by them on the 1959/61 London to Brighton Run driven by Bill Boddy. Features a single horisontal 978cc engine designed by Vauxhall of Luton. Six  made.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1908 Unknown Paris Taxi
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand) was intrigued by this photo and wondered what the car was? -- Hunt which did not result in the ID of car but identified the formidable lady as Mme J Decourcelle, the first female licensed Paris Taxi Driver in 1908, giving up her horse Gisele for this car. Newspaper noted "It is very probable that the art of driving an automobile will never become woman's trade where the usual imperfections of feminine character can lead to such frightful results".

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909 Wolseley Siddeley 16'20 Tourer
Anoher photo received from Turtle Bunbury (Eire) who is trying to track the make of this vehicle, probably in Lake District; not sure when? -- Regretfully no registration visible so no assistance in accurate dating. From longish bonnet and chunky wheel hubs this is a cca 1909 Wolseley Siddeley 16'20 Tourer. Wolseley started in 1901 as part of Vickers with Herbet Austin. Became biggest manufacturer in UK but overexpanded. Bought from receiver by William Morris; > BMC > Leyland, ended 1975.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909 Lorraine Dietrich Landaulette
Couple of photos received from Turtle Bunbury (Eire) who is trying to track the make of these two vehicles, probably in Lake District; not sure when? -- Not two vehicles; photos show the same car, one with hood up and one with hood down. Registration is London County Council, early 1909. The car is a cca 1909 Lorraine Dietrich 20HP Landaulette. Founded in 1884, hiring Ettore Bugatti in 1902 and buying Isotta Fraschini 1907, buying Ariel Motors Birminghamn as British manufacturing facility 1909.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1916 Crane Simplex Model 5
Surfing through the internet in attempting to identify old vehicles we came across a New Brunswick Free Public Library Wikipedia Website Page showing a number of interesting unidentified vehicles..  --   Photo is notated 'Car C' and intrigued because of the unusual front suspension arrangement., a pair of brass shock absorbers affixed between the front axle and headlight stanchions. This was one of the most expensive and exclusive cars of America being a cca 1916 Crane Simplex Model 5.

1916 Crane Simplex Model 5

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1916 Buick Series D Touring
Cinema screen grab taken from an American TV Series "Legends of Tomorrow" made in 2016 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Story about time-travelling group of heroes and villains who try to defeat an immortal threat that could affect not only Earth, but all of time. --  However we were saved only just in time from extermination by our Mark Dawber identifying this vehicle as a cca 1916 Buick Series D Touring. The D was introduced in 1916 when 105,471 Buicks were made.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1922 Daimler 4'20 Ambulance
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand) was intrigued by this photo and wondered if it was maybe a Daimler? -- Indeed a British Daimler which started in 1896 and licensed the use of the Daimler Cannstatt name in the UK. Obtained the British Royal Warrant 1902 and supplied vehicles to the Royalty until the 1950s. This one has a short bonnet, hinged lever bonnet catch, no front brakes and has an open-drive body.  This makes it a 4 cyl c1922 Daimler 4'20 Ambulance.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1923 Bean 11.9 Tourer
Lovely photo received from Ian Martin (UK) of his Great Grandfather sitting proudly by his car. He was the one time editor of the Berrow's Worcester Journal, the world's oldest daily newspaper. Probably 1920-30. Can we ID the vehicle please as he has failed!  -- Registration is Worcester  CBC mid 1923. Town is famous foe Worcester Porcelain, Worcester Sauce, and Edward Elgar. This is a cca 1923 Bean 11.9 Tourer based on the purchase in 1919 of Perry Motor Company and their 11.9.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927 Praga AN Charabanc
Cinema screen grab taken from a German Mini-Series "Fabrik der Offiziere"  (The Officer Factory) made in 1989 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Story of investigation of lieutenant's death at a German officer school in the last years of WW2. -- Interesting choice of vehicle for Germany seeing it was made in Czechoslovakia, incidentally where the film was made! This is a cca 1927 Praga AN Charabanc, described as a Cabrio-autobus.  Praga started 1907 as a car company.

1927 Praga AN Charabanc

Story of a burglary at an old Colonels' hose by three thieves and reaction of family thinking about inheritance; except the old boy is not dead! -- French vehicle whose origins were based on a car of the same period. This is the 'utility' version, a cca 1929 Citroen C6 Camionnette with a six cylinder 2,442cce engine for a 2000kg payload.

1929 Citroen C6 Camionnete

Cinema screen grab taken from an American Film "Mobsters" made in 1991 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Story about four gangsters who use violence to achieve theirs aims and only trust each other to run their crime empire. -- Interesting vehicle as it looks like a very old model updated but is in fact a cca 1929 Hudson Super Six Sedan. Hudson was formed 1909 in Detroit using name of Joseph Hudson of Department store fame.  Became American Motors in 1954.

1929 Hudson Super Six Sedan

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1931 Plymouth PA Sedan
Photograph posted on the PreWarCar website by Henk asking if anybody can identify the car in the photo  marked as 'American mystery car'.
-- Car is indeed American and was named after a brand of binder twine popular amongst farmers and nothing to do with cars. History can be traced back to Maxwell Chalmers taken over by Walter Chrysler and transformed into the Chrysler-Plymouth. This is a cca 1931 Plymouth PA Sedan. Plymouth was the economy brand of Chrysler Cor.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Possibly 1931 Duesenberg Speedster
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what the car is?  -- Not exactly! None of our experts could nail it because it probably is a 'special', possibly based on a cca 1931 Duesenberg Speedster, possibly the Model J. Problem is that while the back and the typical Duesenberg curved bonnet louvres are correct, the radiator and front end are not, possibly been modified.

 Possibly 1931 Duesenberg Speedster

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1933 Chenard & Walcker Aigle 8
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand) was intrigued by this photo and wondered if it was a Daimler? -- French yes, grand yes, made in Paris yes, - Citroen no. The manufacturer started 1898, won the first LeMans 24 hour race in 1923, was fourth largest in France in 1925, but by 1936 was bankrupt, bought by Chausson. 5 bonnet flaps, this is a cca 1933 Chenard & Walcker Aigle 8 Cabriolet Quatre Glasces. Aigle means Eagle as per the mascot on the rad. Engine was V8, 3.5L, 84 HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1935 Triumph Gloria Sports Saloon
Photograph posted on the PreWarCar website by Henning Wulff asking if anybody can identify the car in the photo from a friend
born in England of her, father's car. They would like to know the make but after hours of searching the internet they have had no success. -- Car is indeed British and is from the Gloria range of coupes, sports, saloons and tourers made by Triumph Motor Co in Coventry between 1934 and 1938.  If 4 sets louvres, it is a cca 1935 Triumph Gloria Sports Saloon.

1935 Triumph Gloria Sports Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1935 Rover 12 Sports Saloon
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand) was intrigued by this photo and wondered if it was a Rover. He also thought he recognised the man ? -- The car is indeed a Rover and from glimpse of chrome strap on the spare wheel cover, and the shape of the bonnet louvres, this is a cca 1935 Rover 12 Sports Saloon which then cost £298 in UK. A bit of further research determined the man is famous Canadian actor  Raymond Massey, grandson from Massey-Harris tractor dynasty.

1935 Rover 12 Sports Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:c1949 Fiat Topolino Model C
Interesting photo sent to us by George Layton of Bracciano (Italy), asking if we could advise make, model, series?
--  The vehicle chassis shown  was designed in Italy but was also made in France as a Simca. Despite the engine being at the front, rear radiator, cars are perhaps better known for rear engined products. This is a 569cc c1949 Fiat Topolino Model C which has chassis over rear axle suggesting the more unusual estate, van or pik-up. 500,000 made. Became Fiat 600  in 1955.

c1949 Fiat Topolino Model C

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unidentified c1904 Double Phaeton
Photo received from Ian Elliott on behalf of Turtle Bunbury  (Eire), taken at Lisnavagh House in Co Carlow, c. 1906. Number looks like IX44 (perhaps), possibly from Co. Longford; or IY44  Co. Louth. Possibly a De Dion 1904-1906 owned by Captain Brush of Brohatna. -- Not De Dion Bouton. Regret person is blocking out all ID features and photo is simply too small at 72dpi to enlarge detail. Possibly a French Mors, or a French  Gardner Serpollet  'steamer'  with the engine  underside/rear.

Unidentified c1904 Double Phaeton

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unknown 1920s Camionnette Special
One of a number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify the lorry in a snapshot recently purchased but which has no history and no date is known. -- Regretfully no. Seems to be a home made modification of a relatively small car into a small camionnnette. No definitive identification features except that it seems to re rear wheel drive and had disc wheels with only three studs, rear wheels reversed.

Unknown 1920s Camionnette Special

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unidentified 1930s Tourer Body
Number of interesting photos received from John Bachellier, Templeton, Central Coast California (USA) of a body only he rescued in Los Angeles short while ago. Alloy body, mixed wood and steel body frame, steel front and rear wings - no bonnet, radiator, frame, engine etc. Would be most thankful if someone could make an ID! -- None of our contributors in UK or overseas were able to identify it. While some say it does have a British flavour,  others say possibly may be French?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unidentified Steyr Axle
Number of interesting photos received from Ondrej Bujok (Czech Republic) advising he has a piece of Steyre in his garden that looks like rear axle year 1926 Steyr VII. Can we help with recognition and can we advise where it would be best to list it to sell it? -- Regrefully our knowledge base relates mainly to the general overall veteran and vintage vehicle scene. We do not have any Steyr  experts so no specific in-depth knowledge. Perhaps a good place to sell it would be Prewarcar.
