IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1902 De Dion Bouton Type J
Another curious photo received from Roger
Lovell (UK) taken
in Kibworth Beauchamp, Leicestershire. Driver is a Mr Barrett and
passenger is a Mr Davis. The pair worked in the Kibworth area as motor
engineers for a short while. --
Early de Dion features. Has a 'pick-up' back, and has doors, so had
involved some later do-it-yourself features. No numberplate. Our
Ariejan Bos confirms a cca
1902 De Dion Bouton Type J, originally
probably Rear Entrance Tonneau coachwork.

Wolseley 10'12 Tonneau
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on the internet and wandered if it was a Woleseley? --
Herbert Austin, a Brit living in Australia 1893 ran the factory that
developed the Fredrick Wolseley sheep shearing machine, returning to UK
1898 to look after London end, and added cars to the range. Bought out
by Vickers including Austin in 1901. This is a cca
1903 Wolseley 10'12 Rear Entrance Tonneau.
Austin left in 1905 to start Austin Motors

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906
Lorraine Dietrich Tourer
Interesting photo received from Alun
Pugh of Leed (UK).
He thinks it was owned by the KIRK family of Castle Grove [a
fine house] in Headingley, Leeds. Registration is U 471.
-- U
471 was a Leeds CBC registration
issued 1906. The company hired Ettore Bugatti to design earlier cars
but this one is a cca
1906 Lorraine Dietrich Roi Des Belges.
Most models were manufactured in France in Lunéville, Lorraine
or in Alsace. The 20 HP was made in Birmingham England for about
a year.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906
Royal Tourist Model F
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on the internet and in the background behind a Ford T stuck in
the mud; - puzzled by the radiator? -- Relatively
unusual car and one of a few from the USA which had a circular
radiator. This one has inspection covers on the upper surface, vertical
louvres below and very tall filler cap. Made in Cleveland Ohio, a
follow on from Hoffman Steam Car, this is cca
1906 Royal Tourist Model F Touring, 4-cyl.
40 HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1912
Bradbury Motorcycle
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on the internet and wanted to know make, year and model; a
photo from the Wellington area dated '1910-20'; no other info. Zenith
Gradua? --
Our veteran motorcyclist Chas Moody says not a Zenith but ca
1912 Bradbury.
Tank is distinctive of the Bradbury marque
(1902-24), as is the one piece engine cranckase with lugs for the frame
and seat down tubes, making the engine an integral part of the frame.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1912
Calthorpe 12'15 Tourer
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on the internet and was puzzled by the radiator? --
View from One Tree Hill, a volcanic peak that is an important memorial
place for the Maori. Humpy rad so I thought perhaps a Calcott but two
of our experts advise it is definitely a cca 1912 Calthorpe
Tourer,
probably 12'15HP. About 24 built and only couple survivors; in NZ and
OZ!! Calthorpe of Birmingham UK best known for their competition cars.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913
Talbot 'Invincible' Tourer
Interesting Facebook photo from Juha Kaitanen (Finland)
who is trying to identify the vehicle taken in a town called Savonlinna
in Finland. Suggested it may be an Austin or a perhaps a Talbot? --
Definite hump on the radiator which is higher than bonnet line, so not
an Austin. It is indeed a cca
1913 Talbot 'Invincible' Tourer,
probably the 25 HP. Interesting to note a near flat rear tyre and a
stone under the left front wheel. Also just visible are the tops of the
middle foldable 'jump seats'.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1923
Unic L1 10HP Torpedo
Lovely photo of a car outside the east end
of Romsey Abbey received from Neil Jones (UK)
who is a guide at the Abbey and collects old photographs of the abbey.
--
The registration is unclear but seems to be HO #312 which would
have been issued by Southampton County Council. Romsey is about
10 miles away. The car is not British but is French. It has a rounded
rather than flattish bonnet and rounded front to the mudguards. This suggests
it is a cca
1923 Unic L1 10HP Torpedo.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1924 Crossley 14 Saloon
Puzzling photo received from Sharon
Heppell (UK) editor
of the Romany & Traveller Family History Society.
Photo was taken in the late 1920s/early 1930s, probably in
Lancashire, England, and shows her great-grandmother Pamela Sillers
(left) and great-aunt Muriel Sillers (sitting). From their dress,
possibly a wedding. --
Really not very much to go on; no sight of bonnet and it is a coach-built
body. Probably an upmarket cca 1924 Crossley 14 (12'14)
Saloon, four-cylinder
2,388cc .

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1926 Ford Model T Tudor Sedan
Puzzling photo received from Daryl Foster,
Victoria, BC (Canada) who
is wondering if we can identify the car in the attached photo taken in
the Netherlands and owned by a family lining there. Sorry about the quality.
--
No visible springs so number of our experts agree on Ford Model T. Our
John Warburton advises it is a cca
1926 Ford Model T Tudor Sedan;
'Improved Ford' was introduced in July 1925. Radiator, bonnet louvres
and the high front bumper bars (an optional extra that year) all
match.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1926
Lancia Charabanc
Interesting photo received from our Singer
expert Simon Bishop (UK)
saying received from a Singer background but did not seem to be one. What
was it? --
Agree not a Singer and relatively sure this is a cca
1926 Lancia Charabanc. It looks like
it is a big 18 seater so is probably based on larger Pentajota lorry
chassis made between 1924-33. Lancia charabancs were very popular in
the UK during the 1920s. Vicenzo Lancia was a FIAT racing driver in
1900 and started own company 1906.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1926
Peugeot 172R Cabriolet
Knowing my ownership of a 5CV Citroen, our regular contributor Mark Dawber
(New
Zealand) wondered if this is a Customised
5CV, which was posted on facebook apparently
from a French postcard. --
Yes and no ! It was generally classified in France as a 5CV, but it
went through three different size engines and four different models,
and NO it it was not a Citroen. This one has headlamps on the
wings so a later cca
1926 Peugeot 172R Cabriolet of which
about 27,000 were made 1926-1928.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927 Vauxhall
25'70
Laundaulette
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on the internet and wanted to know make, year and model. --
The mummy's head is Egyptian, the car
is British but the numberplate was Irish from
County Claire in south-east of Eire. We had suggested it was a Vauxhall
20'60 but our John Warburton says it is the more interesting
sleeve-valve 25-70hp
of 1927 which General Motors continued
making after the take-over of the original Vauxhall company.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927
Singer Senior 10'20 Tourer
Another photo from our regular contributor Mark Dawber
(New
Zealand) who is trying to identify rear vehicle
on posted on the internet and wandered if it was a Singer? Photo about
1927. Is writing Croatian? --
No, not it is not Croatian nor does it
seem East European; perhaps Esperanto? Car in front is a
Model T Ford and our Singer expert Simon Bishop confirms the car behind
is a
cca
1927 Singer Senior 10'20 Tourer. Semi
elliptical springs and artillery wheels confirm model/year

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1927
Singer Six 14'34 Two Seater
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify the vehicle
posted on the internet and wandered if it was a Singer? --
Our Singer expert Simon Bishop agrees with our other experts that it is
indeed a Singer but says it is quite difficult
to tell if it is a 27'28 Senior or a 14'34 Six, as the two-seaters tend
to look identical in photographs . From the chunkier tyres he feels it
is mole likely to be a cca
1927 Singer Six 14'34 Two Seater/Dickey,
which was on 20'' tyres rather than 19".

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1928
Trojan Arcilles Saloon
Bunch of photos sent to us by Graham Ball (UK)
of car MW2962 taken around 1932 in Swindon, Wiltshire. Image is
from Facebook, and he is trying to establish if it was a relative who
had a shop in the area. --
The car is quite interesting as it is a relatively unusual saloon
version of the mid-engined Trojan Utility Car. Registration is Wilts
County Council issued mid 1928, so this is the later 1488cc two
cylinder two-stroke on optional pneumatic tyres, fabric bodied cca
1928 Trojan Archilles Saloon

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1929
Citroen C6 Berline
Another puzzling photo received from James
Baxendale (UK) of cars belonging to his
family. This one appears to have been taken in Geneva in about 1928.
--
Not a British car but French, and it is a Citroen. A new range of
Citroens was introduced in late 1928 being the C4 and C6. The bonnet
louvres go along the full length of the bonnet suggesting this is the
bigger six cylinder model. No wheelhubs suggest an earlier model, and
two side windows, so this would be a cca
1929 Citroen C6 Berline.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1930
Buick Six
Puzzling photo received from Ray Viney (UK)
who has not been able to establish the
make and model of the car in the photo which was taken in 1933 in
Newport, Monmouthshire. He assumes it is classed as an open tourer
-- Photo
looks almost like a film screen grab. Registration GF 6634 was issued by London County Council in April 1930.
The car however is not British bur American, This is a cca 1930
Buick Six. From the photo it is a little difficult to tell if it is a
'Touring' or a 'Roadster'.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1930
Ford Model A Roadster
Another interesting photo sent
to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is collector of old photos. Can we identify this car. The photo
belongs to his fellow collector. No additional info is available,
neither year, no venue. --
Regret cannot be much help on venue apart from,.. an orchard! Car is a
bit easier, identification mainly from the wheels and dating from lack
of curve to the bottom of bulkhead, no side lights. This is cca
1930 Ford Model A Roadster. Model A
1927-1931.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1932
Austin 16'6 Saloon
Bunch of photos sent to us by Graham Ball (UK)
this one showing his mother, and was taken in Lynton in 1948.
On the back of the photo is written 'JJ the Blue Peril'. I
remember some reference in the family to a Joet Javelin, but pretty
sure not a Joet? --
The name was Jowett and indeed it is NOT a Jowett.
Registration is not visible but photo name suggests JJ, issued by
London CC in 1932. Larger wheel hubs, bulkhead sidelights, date this a
cca 1932 Austin 16'6 Saloon, possibly aBurnham.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Perhaps
1932 Hispano Suiza or Delage
Another puzzling photo received from from
Georges Truffaut (Belgium) of
a vehicle he is trying to identify. "Is it a Rolls or is it a
Hispano Suiza or .. ". --
Too many things against it being a Roll, more likely Hispano
Suiza. Slatted
rads seem to have started round 1931 so possibly J12 or K6. Both have
flap louvers and encased spare wheel. Small wheel hubs. Further
option suggested was Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8 but had knock-on
spinner hubs. Another
option is a cca
1933 Delage D8 Coupe de Ville.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1934
Humber Vogue Pillarless Coupe
Another puzzling photo received earlier from James
Baxendale (UK) of cars belonging to his
family. This one appears to have been marked Herefordshire, 1930s.
--
The registration
VJ 5851 was indeed issued by Hereford County
Council in 1934. The photo shows as rather attractive coachwork on a
relatively early car. This is a
cca
1934 Humber Vogue Pillarless Coupe.
This was a rare Captain Molyneux designed car from the Humber 12 range
having a four-cylinder side-valve engine of 1669cc

INFORMATION ON VEHICLE:1955
Altair Ford Special
Photo sent to us by Glenn Burnage (UK)
who is trying to track down the owner of a Ford special that he owned
several years ago, and has some info about the car that the current
owner may appreciate. The car is an Altair, reg No ESL587 Perhaps we
may know of its whereabouts. --
Regret we have no info on current owner/location but can advise that
our Publicity Officer Tony Russell was complicit in manufacturing
several Altair
1172 cars with Tony Weale of Reigate,
in about 2001 - 5.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1965
Peugeot 404 Berline
Another interesting photo sent
to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is collector of old photos. Can we identify the car taken in the
Yugoslav city of Lipice in 1973? --
Popular French car 1960-1975 of which nearly 3 million were made in
France and on various continents. The village of Lipice is now in
Croatia and is inland from the Adriatic Sea from Senj. There is also a
Lipica in neighbouring Slovenia (ex-Yugo). The car has bi-coloured indicators so
is cca
1965+ Peugeot 404 Berline.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1969
Fiat 124 Sport Coupe
Another interesting photo sent
to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is collector of old photos. Can we identify a foreign coupe taken
at a certain exhibition held somewhere in the USSR in 1970s ? --
Popular Italian car made in number
of variants 1967 to 1975. Side-on view did not change much during the
period and front of photo is damaged so no headlights shown. However it
does have large hub caps on the wheels so this is cca
1969 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe, either AC
or BC.
