hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -

1903 Sidney Straker Steam Vehicle
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from a forum of old
photos 1915 in Gisborne, NZ. Thornycroft? --
Various similar 1900 including Leyland, Thornycroft and Straker. Leyland
boilers further forward/lower. Thornycroft wood wheels. This has metal
wheels and chain drive from circular disc covering small sprocket on
chassis, so cca
1903 Straker Steam Vehicle Co Lorry
with de Dion type boiler. Became Sidney Straker Squire 1906. None
survive.

1903 Gladiator 12HP Tonneau
Another lovely photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from
a forum of old photos relating to Travelling Cinema asking for make of
vehicle? -- First
organised viewing of big screen projected images was by Lumiere
Brothers in 1895 Paris. Subsequently fairground people provided similar
mobile facilities from backs of cars. This seems a 1905 Travelling
Cinematograph, wooden benches in the open air of carnival tent, in the
Basque Country in a
cca 1903 Gladiator 12HP Tonneu.

1903 Georges Richard Two-seater
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand).-- Doggedly
difficult, not De Dion, is badged and offset handle. Ariejan Bos advises
offset were Mors or Georges Richard. Richard formed Georges Richard in
1893, licensed Vivinus, was later joined by Brasier in 1902 to form
Richard-Brasier, left and in 1906 formed Unic. Logo is Georges Richard
(similar to Brasier Logo) and car is on the company changeover cca
1903 Georges Richard Two-seater & Dickey
likely 12HP.

c1903 Panhard Levassor 15HP Surrey
Very fuzzy photo received from Stephen Browne (UK)
of Prime Minister Archibald Primrose, Earl of Rosebery stuck in 1903
floods in Ponteland. --
Agree cca
1902 Panhard & Levassor Surrey.
Offset starting handle, quite big car. No registration visible, so pre
1903/4 when registration started. Lots of models made in period, about
13. this likely a 15HP. Possibly unlikely that it was purchased from
Charles Rolls as he did not start his dealership until Jan 1903,
and only as a sub-agent of du Cros.

Wolseley 10HP Tonneau
Another interesting photo received from Jonathan Day from
Manchester (UK) asking for identification
of the two cars shown. -- We
have lightened the photo which which appears to show two gentlemen in
military uniform which suggests cca World War One. The car on the left
had registration L 604 which indicates Glamorgan County Council 1905.
The car has a wrap round front radiator, shortish bonnet top suggesting
it is a
cca 1905 Wolseley 10HP Twin Cylinder Rear Entrance
Tonneau.

1907 40HP Napier Roi de Belges Tourer
While browsing through vintage car websites in our investigations we
frequently come across photographs of other unidentified vehicles and
put them aside for future investigation. Surce and history is not
known. -- An
interesting photo showing a big car which had been involved in an
accident, and the lifting gear. Primary identification feature is the
very tall filler cap on a long bonnet, body had no driver's door,
non-rectangular rad, so likely a
cca 1907 40HP Napier Roi de Belges Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1911 Renault 35HP AI Tourer
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking
for identification of the vehicle in 1915 at Tokomaru Bay. --
Renault made myriad models in this period
mixing engines, bodies and chassis, difficult to tell apart.
Identification features seem to be a high dashboard, unusual windscreen
so body poss local, square edges to the radiator, edged mudguards. Rad
changed in 1911, a big car, so likely a
cca 1911 Renault 35HP AI
Tourer, well used.

1912 Napier 12HP Landaulette
Lovely family photo received from Roger
Evans (UK) found
recently but without context. Could we identify actual model and if it
is 1920's, or maybe earlier.

A rather grand quality car preceding
Rolls-Royce in 1900 and winner of Gordon Bennett 1902. Has AA and
RAC badges. Primary identification features are very tall filler cap,
shortish bonnet, no louvres, stubby scuttle, edged front mudguard, gas
lamps, not wire wheels, suggesting cca
1912 Napier 12HP Landaulette. Repaired

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1912
Minerva CC 38HP Charabanc
Another puzzling photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from
a forum of old photos asking for identification of the Minerva in NZ? --
Indeed a Belgian Minerva very popular in
Britain so known in the 'colonies'. The wave of the bonnet goes along
the full way, so pre 1912. The scuttle has a bulbous section leading to
a flat drop to bonnet so after 1910. Body suggests their biggest car of
the period which would makes it a cca
1912 Minerva Model CC 38HP Knight Tourer Charabanc.

1912 Itala Avalve Tourer
Cinema screen grab taken from an Italian
silent film "Filibus" made in 1915 where cars are being
investigated by IMCDB. Film is future science fiction film about a lady
sky pirate and detective chasing her.
-
The car has Itala and Avalve on the rad.
Itala were the winners of the 1907 Peking to Paris and experimented
with engine design. Avalve is a range of Itala cars which use veretical
valveless rotary valve engines. Pre-WW1 rounded edge rad, c1912 Itala
Avalve Tourer, big car likely 50 HP.

1914 SCAT 25'35HP Torpedo
Cinema screen grab taken from an Italian
silent film "Filibus" made in 1915 where cars are being
investigated by IMCDB. Film is future science fiction film about a lady

-- The
film was made during 1914, and the car helpfully has the name SCAT on
it. Made by the Giovanni Ceirano (Ceirano brothers were founders of
Italian auto industry), Has electrics and rounded mudguards so this
looks much like a cca
1914 SCAT 25'35HP Torpedo, made
1912-1920.

Humber Humberette Two-Seater
Another interesting photo received from Jonathan Day from
Manchester (UK) asking for identification
of the two cars shown. -- We
have lightened the photo which which appears to show two gentlemen in
military uniform which suggests cca World War One. The car on the right
has no registration visible but has the distinctive shape of the MK2
cyclecar built 1913/14 as a
cca 1914 Humber 8HP Humberette
Two Seater.
These were 8HP Vee Twins 996 available as air or water cooled.

While
browsing through vintage car websites in our investigations we
frequently come across photographs of other unidentified vehicles for
future investigation. Source and history not known.

“Field cinema”. Car made in Prague
Czechoslovakia by a company that was started in 1907 as Ceskomoravská
Továrna Na Stroje who took out a licence from Isotta-Fraschini. This
is own design c1914 Praga Grand
Tulip Phaeton sold widely to Austro-Hungarian forces as
staff cars, 335 were made.

Detroiter Touring
Puzzling photo on the AACA Forum posted by our friend Leif
Holmberg (Sweden) from a South Australian
origin, asking for identification. -- Similar
on Help Page 30. Digging in records found Dutch advertisement for 1915
Detroiter Touring, 4, 6 or 8 cyl.
Early RHD Briggs-Detroiter Motor Car Co (1912'16) vehicles with
Continental engines were sold in England 1913 as Royal Detroiters so
would have found their way to the 'colonies'. Became United Detroiter
Corp in 1916. Defunct 1915 & 1917.

1924 Mathis Type P Torpedo
Cinema screen grab taken from a Polish TV
Documentary Series "Geniusze i Marzyciele" (Geniuses and
Dreamers) made in 2021 where cars are being investigated by
IMCDB.Polish scientists 1920s -- Many
photos of parades of Mathis cars are featured in some episodes but
could find no connection between Mathis and Poland. This little car has
pointed smooth front wings so is a cca
1924 Mathis Type P Torpedo Two-Seater
6CV with four cylinder 760cc engine, various made 1921-25.

Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification of
vehicle. -- Nice
French mix. Three relatively unusual cars at what seems to be a mixed
garage, including a crankshaft that is taller than the boy. The car on
the left was as a result of a design by Bugatti for a German company so
moved to France after WW1 and became 4th biggest in the 1920s.
Scaffolding for the headlamps suggests 1923
MATHIS Type P Torpedo.

Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification of
vehicle. -- Nice
French mix. Three relatively unusual cars at what seems to be a mixed
garage, including a crankshaft that is taller than the boy. The car in
the middle is French, made by the "Air Cooled Car Co" in
Paris SARA, 1923-1930, whose cars in Scotland were called the
'Scotsman'. This is a cca
1923 SARA 7HP Two-Seater. Also had
bigger sports cars, much raced.

vehicle. -- Nice
French mix. Three relatively unusual cars at what seems to be a mixed
garage, including a crankshaft that is taller than the boy. The car on
the right is very unusual and seems to
have a Theophile Scneider
logo.
Our Ariejan Bos agrees but we do not have trace of this type of front
so are at a loss to name the model. Followon to Rochet-Schneider
1910/31.

1928 CWS T1 False Cabriolet
Cinema screen grab taken from a Polish TV
Documentary Series "Geniusze i Marzyciele" (Geniuses and
Dreamers) made in 2021 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB.
Polish scientists in 1920s. -- The
car was designed by Tadeus Tanski for Centralne Warsztaty Samochodowe,
first Polish firm having series production of cars in 1927. Used only
one size of nuts and bolts. This is a cca 1928 CWS T1 False Cabriolet.
Instructed to stop production when Polski Fiat started 1932.

Probably 1933 Ford BB Lorry
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos asking for identification of
the vehicle. Suggested as Ford lorry in England. --
Rather nice truck which carries a
Worcester 1933 registration. It has an interesting wind-up roof (loading
from above?), and has Ford wheels. Two experts think could be a special
Forward
Bodied Ford BB,
BB introduced 1932 although it has looks of a 1937+ Ford 7V
Forward Control, but the reg would be wrong.

c1933 FIAT 508 Ballila Spider
Cinema screen grab taken from a 1972 Hungarian musical film comedy
"Fuss, hogy utolérjenek!" (Run to catch up) where cars are
being investigated by IMCDB; about spy gang trying to get secret laser.
-- Car has tapering rectangular post-1932 badge,
curved badge bar, big lights, strange bonnet top, and likely from
bewildering international Balilla 508 range made by FIAT between
1932-37 with many models, shapes, and engines, RHD so likely a Walter
Junior Czech c1933
FIAT Ballila Spider.

1934 Standard Avon Special Coupe
Another puzzling photo received from from Georges Truffaut (Belgium)
of a vehicle trying to identify. Early Jensen?
-- Not Jensen but advised by our Tony
Oakes cca
1934 Standard Avon Special Coupe made
by New Avon Body Co established Warwick in 1919 based on using a
complete Standard 9HP chassis. Alan Jensen had worked for Avon before
own company and all then in competition to Swallow who became SS, then
Jaguar. Avon name lasted to 1986 making bodies Jaguar XJC &
Estates.

1935 Polski Fiat Junak

Polish scientists 1920s.--
Polski Fiat began 1932 by Panstwowe
Zaklady Inzynieryjne in Warsaw using Italian made parts, making the
Junak and Mazur, also commercial and military vehicles. The car on the
left is a cca 1935 Polski Fiat Junak based on Fiat 508 Series 3 Saloon,
and on right looks the bigger Mazur.

1912 30HP Cinema Tonneau
Another lovely photo received from Mark Dawber (New Zealand) from
a forum of old photos relating to Travelling Cinema asking
for make of vehicle? --
Research suggests this is from town of Marmande where Family
Sarrus had a garage and son Pierre had an Electric Cinema based on a
cca 1912 Brasier 30 HP Tonnau
to which he had fitted an external
generator to provide the powered to drive the projector. Only problem
our Ariejan Bos says not a Brasier but has no alternative idea on make.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Unknown c1936 Fire Vehicle
Another interesting photo received from regular contributor Joao
Ferreira (Portugal) of poss a
Fire Engine. Front looks mid 30s American but has a British
Austin badge. -- We
have mocked-up bonnet but none of our experts or the AACA can identify.
It is RHD,
Austin badge
and poss Austin headlamps on the side of the
bonnet. No sidelights. Possibly Lucas Horn and Lucas vacuum double
windscreen wiper. Unlikely Austin, but if, then c1936 Austin with poss
BMC Austin Seven Mini grille
