seems to be on the lookout for photos of unusual cars, and wondered if
we knew what this one was? -- Well
known French car by company started in 1810 making saws and bicycles.
Then made a steam tricycle 1889 with Leon Serpollet and later petrol
one with Panhard-Daimler engine. Early cars had type 'numbers'. The car
on the photo is a cca
1893 Peugeot Type 8 Phaetonnet, with a
vee twin 2 cylinder engine, 3HP, 1282cc, a runabout capable of 20kmh.

impressive looking man in a very early car I thought was a Daimler but
Ariejan Bos says French origin cca
1899 Panhard & Levassor Twin Cylinder Phaeton with
spider seat. P&L built cars with similar bonnets under licence from
Daimler Germany. The fur coated man is Frencman Henri Deutsch de la
Meurthe "Oil King of Europe".

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1902 Waverley Model 21 Electric
Interesting known photo received from Inigo Agirre which seems to
originate from a Spanish website which sells items on the web. Postcard
headed "SAN SEBASTIAN. PASEO DE LA ALAMEDA. TERRAZA CAFE NUEVO
KUTZ. HACIA 1910. MUY RARA." -- San
Sebastian is on the north coast of Spain very close to the French
border. I thought the vehicle was perhaps a steamer, but Ariejan Bos
advises this is likely a USA made cca
1902 Waverley Model 21 Electric.

1906 La Buire 35/50 Tourer
Couple of interesting photos received from Roger Larke (UK)
who is a member of the Local History Group of the Sudbury Gasworks
Restoration Trust in Derbyshire. They would like to identify the cars,
and possibly the owner. -- The
Registration Plate DB 26 was issued by Stockport County Borough Council
in 1904 probably to the Holligdrake & Co, engineers and
coachbuilder, but was probably changed/put on later onto this French cca
1906 La Buire 35'50 Tourer.

Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make. --
Difficult, but from the inexhaustible records of Ariejan Bos are
advised this is a 1907
Werner Two-Seater Voiturette car at
the 'Concours de Tourisme' in Poitiers (France) on May 1907. Meeting
consisted of several events like a hill climb and a 270 km run. Read

a forum of photos and asking for information on the vehicle.
Is it a Minerva? -- This
is a follow-up on our item relating to the 1904 Siddeley 6HP, further
up on this page, in front of a Wardill Garage. - This is a photo of
another presumably later Wardill showroom because the car shown is more
modern and has a 1909 London CC registration, and the automobile is a
British cca 1909 Humber 8HP

1911 Delahaye Type 32 Delivery Van
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make. --
This is a French vehicle made by a company founded in 1894, much better
known for its racing and sports cars starting with the Paris-Marseilles
race in 1897. Started by Emile Delahaye in Paris, this is an unusual cca
1911 Delahaye Type 32 Delivery Van.
Later branched into commercial vehicles, specialised making most of
France's Fire Engines.

film "The Galloping Major" made in 1951 where cars are being
investigated by IMCDB. Story about gambling at a horse racing track by
buying a horse in the Grand National. --
The vehicle in this picture is a known
cca
1911 LGOC Type B Open Top Double Decker Bus
which is in preservation. Introduced 1911 following the type X bus, it
has 35 seat capacity and a speed of 16mph (26kph) with a maximum of
35mph. 16 people inside and 18 wet on top.

Couple of photos received from Janet Durbin (UK)
saying ' I am an
historical volunteer researcher at NT Polesden Lacey, Surrey. and would
really like to identify the two trucks in the courtyard of Polesden
(location where King George VI and Queen spent their honeymoon). The
photograph was taken in the 1920s used for collecting guests' luggage
from the station in Bookham -- The vehicles are a
cca
1914 Dennis Lorry (rebodied)
and a
cca 1925 Morris Snubnose Van. Read

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1915 Vauxhall Model Tourer
Couple of interesting photos received from Roger Larke (UK)
who is a member of the Local History Group of the Sudbury
Gasworks Restoration Trust in Derbyshire. They would like to identify
the cars, and possibly the owner. -- There
are a couple of things immediately apparent from the photo. The first
is that the registration number is a 'trade plate', and the other is
that the bonnet has tapering flutes, this suggesting a
cca 1915 Vauxhall Model D Tourer.

1922 GN Two-Seater
Another very interesting photo from a forum of old car photos where the
vehicle was not yet been identified. Photo is entitle Gorran and
features the pub Barley Sheaf Inn. --Gorran
is a parish in Cornwall. The pub is still there and seems operating.
The car was registered at Cornwall CC but was made in London, a
later version of popular GN sporting cyclecar made by Ronald Godfrey
and Frazer-Nash. This is a short-lived cca
1922 GN Two-Seater 1100cc four, made
after they left.

1924 Citroen 5CV Cabriolet
Cinema screen grab taken from a German comedy film "Frau im Storm
" (Woman in the River) made in 1939 where cars are being
investigated by IMCDB. Story about an auto repair shop in Vienna
Austria whose owner rescues a suicidal woman from the Danube, and she
then runs off with the money. -- Obviously a
wrecked car being dismanteled but a familiar radiator advises it is
French. From flat mudguards and split windscreen this was a cca
1924 Citroen Model C 5CV Cabriolet.

Another very interesting photo from a forum of old car photos where the
vehicle was not yet been identified. --
The car is French, the registration is Italian
and the side of drive is British. This is a
cca 1925 Citroen 5CV Tourer
registered in Bolsano on Italian/Austrian Border. Interestingly, Italy
began driving on the right in the 1890s. In 1912 it was made
compulsory. However, Italain cities with a tram network could continue
driving on the left. Rome changed 1925, Milan in 1926.

This type of racing car body is called a 'tank' after the shape of the
battle tanks of its era, and a number of manufacturers in the early
1920s made one. This is a
cca 1925 Chenard & Walcker Z1
Tank,
1100cc four, that took part in the 1925 Le Mans 24 Hour Race. C&W
won the inaugural Le Mans in 1923 with their U3S Sport 90HP 2978 four
cyl.

The vehicle in this picture is full of
children and closer analysis shows that the wheels have no tyres on
them, suggesting a wreck to play on. Quite an Unusual vehicle even in
Britain. made in Coventy, company defunct by 1931, this is cca
1925 Swift 12'35 Tourer.

"Sasha " (Black Blood ) made in 1930 where cars are being
investigated by IMCDB. A Russian woman tells the tragic story of her
life. -- Russian film company in 1930,
only five years into Stalin's reign on the death of Lenin. All cars
were very difficult to get hold of in Russia (see Lenin's Rolls Royce)
. This car is seems to have a scuttle bonnet which would make it a
French vehicle and size suggests a cca
1928 Renault OS Lorry or perhaps
bigger PR.

1930 Wolseley Hornet Coupe
Another interesting photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a forum of old photos and asking for information
on the make of vehicle. -- British
manufacturer with complicated early history which ended in William
Morris buying them from his own personal funds in 1927, beating Austin
and General Motors. Morris then developed a small car for the Wolseley
company based on the Morris Minor but with new 6 cylinder Wolsey engine
introducing the 1930
Wolseley Hornet Coupe.

Vehicles established 1931 as part of Vauxhall Motors who were an early
British company which became a subsidiary of the American General
Motors. This is a cca
1935 Bedford WLG Horse Box with
forward storage space above driver.

Originating as a horse drawn vehicle taking
people to shooting moors in 1890 England, it morphed into a motorised
Shooting Brake in the 1920s, then an Estate Car as shooting grew less
popular, and a Station Wagon in USA, this is a cca
1937 Ford V8 Station Wagon.

Another very interesting photo from a forum of old car photos where the
identity of the vehicle is being requested but had not yet been
determined. -- Interesting photo does not show registration nor has
have any accompanying text to advise where photographed. --
Seem military uniforms but possibly not
German because the car is German built in two Germanies. It is either a
pre-WW2 "DKW
F8 Cabriolet" from West Germany,
or a post-WW2 "IFA F8 Cabriolet " of East
Germany.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Unknown pre-1908
Tourer
Another photo from Matte Papp showing his great-grandfather as baby with
mother in 1913. The car was later taken by the Austro-Hungarian
government because of the mobilization for WW1 in 1914. Not much is
known about the car type except from grandpa that the car was a Ford,
not a Ford Model T, but an earlier model. -- We
are not Ford specialists but from our general knowledge of early Fords,
we do not think the car in your photo is a Ford. Any
