:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage photo or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1899 Peugeot
15 Double Phaeton
Interesting photo received from Peter Semple (UK)
of a car which was in his grandfather’s photo album labeled
“first car in Aberdeen”; not sure if the name given below is
really the owner. -- Looked
to me like a 1897 Daimler but checked with Ariejan Bos who advised it
was a French Peugeot 15 made between 1897 and 1901. Interesting to note
Peugeot had ended agreement with Daimler and made their own 8HP transverse
flat twin engine. Charles
Rolls fist car was 15, and was
Peugeot dealer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1904
Dixie 12HP SE Tonneau
Puzzling photos received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) resulting from our ID of 1904
Leon Bolleee and asks if this photo with Algernon Barkworth
is a similar car. -- Help
again needed from Ariejan Bos who also found it a toughie. Not Leon
Bollee. British coachwork with rounded dash but chassis is a German
cca
1904 Dixie 12HP SE Tonneau. Made by Automobilwerk Eisenach who in 1927
licensed Austin 7. Bought 1928 by BMW, start of BMW cars. Registration
BT 48 is 1904 Yorkshire (ER) CC.

Berlina Drascke Taxi
Another puzzling photo received from Par
Sorliden (Sweden)
of for him unknown car. No info when or
where the photos are taken. Any ideas what they could be? --
No, so asked our expert Ariejan Bos who
came back with the very interesting information that this is a
cca 1905
taxi (Droschke) with the name Berolina, fabricated by the Berliner
Motorwagen-Fabrik in Templehof.Transmission partly by friction gear.
This factory would produce the Oryx from 1907. Became Duerkopp.

Riley 9HP Two-Seater
Lovely photos of dog driving car received
from Matthew Sweet (USA)
from Cecil Hepworth 1908 Film “The Dog Outwits the
Kidnapper”. Can we advise car maker? --
We have the same dog/child photo on
our Help
Page 33 dated 2010 so we know that the
car is a cca
1905 Riley 9HP Two-Seater and that the
dog is Rover, played by Hepwoert.s dog ' Blair'.
One of two films starring 'Rover' which made name nation's favourite
for dogs. Film was 8 minutes long. Click

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1907
Belsize Landaulette Taxi
Photo found on the internet while researching other enquiries
which is of an unidentified vehicle which we put aside for
investigation later. We have now lost the location of the photo so
cannot acknowledge origin.--The vehicle is
obviously a Taxi as it has a taximeter beside the driver. It also has a
just readable registration DM 273 Flint CC (Wales) which helps in
dating the vehicle to late 1907. The radiator and drooping dumbirons
advise this is cca
1907 Belsize Landaulette Taxi, poss
18/24.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1912
Riley 10'12 Two-seater
Another puzzling photo received from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) from a local forum of what is apparently a 1920s Fafnir
car owned by grandfather - her mother is the baby in the pic. He sold
it about 1926. - - I
had some doubts that this is a Fafnir so contacted Ariejan Bos who
advised not Fanir but something British, probably c1913 round bonnet
Riley. Our Riley expert Chris Cuss confirmed probability of
cca1912
Riley Two seater, likely the 10'12. Drop arm outside bonnet and Riley
wheels.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1912
Fafnir Torpedo Zweisitzer
Subsequent to the identification of the
enquiry above,
we received a further photo from Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) saying this is from the same
person, small but may be the 1920s Fafnir owned by grandfather - her
mother is the baby in the pic. He sold it about 1926. -- Looks
more like a cca
1912 Fafnir Torpedo Zweisitzer. Fafnir
started in 1894 making needles, then spokes, then engines and
motorcycles. Cars started 1908. If purchased via UK then 12'16HP and
16'20HP Models were available.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1914
Singer 10 Two-Seater
Surrey Vintage Vehicle Society and our experts continue to
assist the specialist veteran/vintage car magazine The
Automobile (UK)
in their quest of identifying and featuring old cars --
This photo-of-a-Photo was sent to them by Nigel Atherstone saying car
was owned by his friend's grandfather. Picture is not of printable
quality so we have attempted to try and improve it. The distinctive
feature is the upward protruding radiator which suggests this is
British cca
1914 Singer 10 Two-Seater.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Probably
1914 Ford Model T
Another interesting photo rom David
Pentecost (UK) trying to date an
old postcard. It has a postage stamp which was first issued in 1911.
Wandering if anyone can throw light on when the car might have been
made. Pre or post WW1? -- Small
size makes it difficult to be absolutely sure of identification but
relatively certain it is an American car, a Ford
Model T with the radiator of the
ptre-1916 shape when instead of angular, it became rounded. The scuttle
is vertical which is pre 1915.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1914
Packard Six 3 38 Kegresse
In the process of researching my article
on Lenin's Rolls Royce
I came across this
photo of a car labeled Tsar Nicholas II's Benz
--
It is amazing the mount of rubbish and
totally wrong mis-information that is continuing to be disseminated by
'first ranking' internet organizations without anybody fully bothering
to check if the facts are actually valid, true or accurate. This is
actually Tsar Nicholas 1914
Packard Six Kegresse Tourer. He
did have a Benz Kegresse. but this is not a Benz.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1915
Sunbeam 12'16 Tourer
Connected with above, another photo of
Algernon Barkworth driving a un-named car.
-- c1915 Sunbeam 12'16
Tourer. Many made
during WW1 mainly for Military use. Algernon Barkworth was a Yorkshire
'gentleman of leisure' bachelor whose main claim to fame was to be a
survivor of the Titanic tragedy. Jumped from the First Class deck by
orchestra into freezing sea and managed to find floating debris to
cling to. Picked up by Carpathia to New York. Later voted onto East
Riding County Council.

Citroen B2 10HP Taxi
Cinema screen grab taken from a Russian film "Byl mesyats
may" (It Was in May) made in 1970, where cars are being
investigated by IMCDB. Film depicts first weeks after the war had
ended. -- This seems to be a scene in Paris
showing the back of a typical Parisian rear-entry bus, probably a cca
1937 Renault TN which came in 4 or 6
cylinder versions, made 1931 to 1971 in various forms. Beside it is an
early
cca 1923 Citroen B2 10HP Taxi often
confused with the 5CV C3 two-seater.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1927
Citroen B14 Landaulette
Interesting photo received from Roger Frie from Univertsity of
British Columbia (Canada) asking for year
and model of the vehicle photographed in Northern Germany in the late
1920s. Is it a Peugeot?. -- No
but close. It has a radiator muffler to prevent freezing which
disguises the rad. This is a cca
1927 Citroen B14 Partitioned Landaulette
which may well have been coachbuilt. Noticable is the weatherproofing
cover over the landaulette join, and for having the direction
indicators.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1926
Morris Oxford Four-Seater
Tragic background enquiry from Neil Jones
(UK) investigating
an accident in 1932 at Luzborough crossroads (nr Romsey) where the

statement in report that car was 1923 Morris Oxford?
-- Two of our experts agree
Morris Oxford Four Seater.

wellbase balloon tyres, four wheel brakes, the front dumb irons tie
bar, and the Barker headlamp dippers.

Ford Model 40 Roadster
Another interesting photo received from Adrian Pollitt (UK) of a
car in Khuzestan, Iran, mid/late 1930s. Father worked for Anglo Iranian
c 1945. -- Khuzestan was province of Iran on the
Persian Gulf bordering Iraq. In 1935 Iran was called Persia, ruled from
1953 to 1979 by Shah Reza Pahlavi following Anglo-American coup.
Replaced by Ayatollah Khomeini, becoming Islamic Republic. The car is a
cca
1934 Ford Model 40, possibly Roadster,

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1935
Chevrolet Master Sedan
Another interesting photo received from
Adrian Pollitt (UK)
of a car in Khuzestan, Iran, early/mid 1940s.--
Khuzestan was province of Iran on the Persian
Gulf bordering Iraq. One year earlier, Iran was called Persia
ruled from 1953 to 1979 by Shah Reza Pahlavi following Anglo-American
coup. Replaced by Ayatollah Khomeini, becoming Islamic Republic. The
car's front bumper suggests it was likely a Canadian Built, for
British/Empire market, cca

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1937
Tatra 70A Saloon
Cinema screen grab taken from Czech film "Vyderac"
(Blackmailer) made in 1937, where cars are being investigated by IMCDB.
Film is about a Director syphening export funds to a foreign bank and
is blackmailed --
This is background vehicle of which there is not much to see, and we
have enlarged. Relatively sure this is a cca

world's third oldest car company in Koprivnice in Czech Republic.
Founded 1850, now making military and civilian trucks.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Probably
1938 De Soto S5 Sedan
Very difficult photo received from Jim Smith (USA)
asking for
year and model of the vehicle beside his grandfather, probably an
American car from the 1930s. -- He
looks a bit like Sean Connery 007. Car looks late 30s American four
door saloon with running board. Centre opening doors. Plain chunky
bumper. Three narrow line louvres all the way back, and external two
hinges. Our Mark Dawber pinpointed it to a cca
1938 DeSoto, the American S5 model and
not export Plymouth-based model.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1938
Maybach SW38 Cabriolet
Cinema screen grab taken from a. Russian film ""Byl
mesyats may" (It Was in May) made in 1970, cars are being
investigated by IMCDB. Film depicts first weeks after the war had
ended. -- Unclear
photo but Maybach Radcap emblem and radiator logo. Likely a
cca 1938
Maybach SW38 Cabriolet, no body molding on windscreen, has windscreen
wipers on the scuttle, and no headlamp tie bar. Maybach was technical
director of Daimler to 1907. Own Company 1909/1960, purchased by
Mercedes.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1947
Ford Super Deluxe Coupe
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual vehicles, and wondered if we
knew what this one, was which is a screengrab? -- American
cars have definite periods of great styling similarity, much as most
cars have today. Therefore defining the differences in the similarity
can be quite complex, especially is quality of photo is fuzzy. However
can advise from bonnet lights that this seems to be an American
cca
1947 Ford Super Deluxe Two-door Coupe.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1949 Morris Commercial Parcel Van
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual vehicles, and wondered if we
knew what this one was? -- Number of vehicles
looked similar; Chevrolet Dubl-Duty Delivery Van and Morris Commercial
PV Van. Photo seems UK, and registration NPL 89 is Surrey County
Council late 1949, so favour the British make as does the very thin
ornamental mudguards back & front, the canvas four hoop roof, so is
cca 1949
Morris Commercial forward control
Parcel Van.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1967
Sovam 1100VS Coupe
Another puzzling photo received from Giorgio Tardisu (Italy) from
a classic car run report; had we had heard of a Sovan? --
No, so did some research. Car is actually
a cca
1967 SOVAM 1100VS Sports Coupe made by
Société des Véhicules André Morin (1030 to 1968) in Parthenay,
western France. Based on Renault parts, made three ranges 850VS

relatively successful in rallying. Changed to airport handling
equipment

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Unidentified
c1903 Tonneau
Another puzzling photo received from regular
contributor Par Sorliden from (Sweden) - Nothing
like it in my system. Louvres seem holes with mesh behind. Help again
was needed from our veterans expert Ariejan Bos in Holland, - who also
found it a
mystery. Looks quite well made, the large outside lever
seems to be rather primitively cut out from a plate of sheet metal.
Beneath the frame, there are several chains visible, pointing to rather primitive drive train.
- Possibly locally made.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Unknown
c1905 Taxi
Another puzzling photo received from Par
Sorliden (Sweden)
of for him unknown car. No info when or
where the photos are taken. Any ideas what they could be? --
No, so asked our experts including Ariejan Bos who
all came back with no specific answer. Agreement that was made as a
Taxi because of the lowered rear chassis. There are similarities in the
bonnet and badge to a Vabis from Sweden who made railway wagons from
1891, later cars and trucks. Became Scania-Vabis 1911.
