:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

1906 Rover 6 Two Seater
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo
featured on facebook. Photo is labeled Queen St Auckland 1905. Rover? --
Yes Rover. Clearly visible are the
front dumbirons, so has conventional springing, so has to be earliest cca
1906 Rover 6 Two Seater, as production
did not start until 1906, - so photo must be earliest 1906 not
5!! Check on Wikipedia noted another error by showing a 6 on
their 8 page !! The Rover 8 had transverse front spring.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1908 Baker Electric 'Queen Victoria'
Another rather splendid photo found
while surfing the internet in the process of identifying ancient
automobiles. Can we help with advising name of manufacturer. -- American
car from Cleveland Ohio by a company founded in 1899. One of their
first cars was sold to Thomas Edison who designed batteries used in the
car. This is a

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1910 Star 15HP Tourer
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo
marked Sydney 1920s, but surely it is much earlier than that. NSW
introduced number plates in 1910 so guess the photo date is 1910? The
two-seater might be identifiable. -- We
passed it to Ariejan Bos who replied ' The car driving towards 'us'
is a Star,
most likely a 1910 15hp model.' The
Star was British, made in Wolverhampton and active 1908 to 1932. The
15HP four model was made 1909 to 1913.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1912 Metallurgique 26 HP Phaeton
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) has sent us this interesting
photo saying 'Obviously a Metallurgique but what year and model? -- Not
strictly the case because the very early Chevrolets had a very similar
radiator! Metalluriques were made in Belgium and were a very up-market
car. 1898 they made locomotives; cars in 1905. Bonnet handle lower
position, type of body, and gas & oil lamps suggest a biggish car
so this is probably a cca
1912 Metallurgique 26 HP Phaeton.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Probably c1914
Albion A10 Charabanc
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) has sent us this interesting
photo saying 'This pic is from the collection of the library at
Birkenhead in Auckland but is obviously not NZ. Any clues to make and
date, or even location? -- Numberplate
looks of the 'British' typeface, 2 letter 4 number, so could be
UK or anywhere in Empire. The Charabanc type of outing was very popular
in the UK after WW1, often in vehicles converted from wartime trucks.
Probably cca
1914 Albion A10 chassis.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1921 Aveling & Porter Steam Roller
Another interesting period photo from a glass negative sent to
us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) " Can you please help ID this road
roller please? Number is 1373' lettering looks like NL..NE..NI..?--
This is another that is very difficult because it shows the back only.
However careful study of the near invisible front suggests a square
steering boss housing with a spindle poking through the top. If this is
correct it is likely to be a Northumberland
cca 1921 Aveling & Porter Steam Roller.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1925
Steyr Typ lll Lorry
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. 'Can you identify lorry taken somewhere in the USSR. I assume
it's not a Soviet lorry though it looks like Ya-3'4. Is it Renault? --
Not Renault, not Soviet vehicle or one from Yaroslavl
State Automobile Plant. Initially marked 'unknown', but further research
suggests this is a
cca 1925 Steyr Typ lll Lorry
built in Steyr, Austria, by company started in 1864 making guns, cars
in 1918.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1925 Ford Model T Charabanc
Surfing through
the internet in attempting to identify old vehicles we came across a
Wikipedia Website Page called Unidentified Automobiles where they are
asking identification. --
Photo is titled "
Old Ford for demolition, Amsterdam, 1951." This is a
post-1924/pre-1926 Ford
Model T (TT) Charabanc.- What is most
puzzling are the front wheels: small diameter pressed steel and fitted
with solid tyres. Also a strange rear hopper body with rudimentary
seats. Perhaps for agricultural use?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1925 Humber 14'40 Tourer
Another interesting period photo from a glass negative sent to
us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) " Can
you please help ID this car parked at Askrigg, North Yorkshire. The car
on the right has plate PY 2914. What is it? --
PY 2914 is North Riding of Yorkshire CBC.
--
The picture is very small and a bit
pixly, but Humber. The distinguishing feature of this particular car is
that the windscreen is split vertically in half and each half is split
horizontally in half. This is a cca
1925 Humber 14'40 Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1927 Daimler Removals Lorry
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo
featured on an NZ site but the truck was in England I presume. Make is
obvious but can you date it from the plate? --
Yes indeed rather obviously a British Daimler.
Photo was labeled 1930s, but the registration HO 6101
had been issued by Southampton County Council in 1927. Although it may
have been rebodied later, registration dates the chassis. Anyway,
unlikely 1930s as it is using oil side lamps?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1928 Jowet 7HP Saloon
Another interesting period photo from a glass negative sent to
us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK) " Can you please help ID this
car parked at Askrigg, North Yorkshire. I think the one on the left is
maybe a Jowett? --
This is indeed a Jowett who started out in Bradford in 1906 making
bicycles and V-twin engines for driving machinery, and some got fitted
into cars as replacements. First own car in 1906 and first closed car
in 1926. No registration is visible but this is a cca
1928 Jowet 7HP Saloon.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1929
Willys Overland Whippet
Another photo received from our regular contributor Raoul Rainer
from Stuttgart (Germany) from
a batch of photos he purchased recently and has on a big website on
line. Blurry photo from the
States and very hard to identify. --
The radiator has crisp edged sides, rather
than curved, the headlamps are drum type and back/front wheels have 12
spokes. Hexagonal wheel hubs. Part of
the new smaller range of cars, our Mark Dawber confirmed this is a cca
1929 Willys Overland Whippet Roadster.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1930 Singer Junior Sports
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) has sent us this interesting
photo from Facebook. In the aftermath of the 1931 Napier earthquake a
journalist was trying to get in for news and it seems the railway
bridge was the only way. Possibly Singer on the radiator but not the
other word. Portlock? -- This
is a Singer
Junior Sports introduced 1926 with
four-cylinder engine of 848cc. In 1928 it made 100 ascents of Portlock
Hill so model named after it. High headlamps suggest cca 1930.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1930
Chevrolet AD Universal Coach
Another photo received from our regular contributor Raoul Rainer
from Stuttgart (Germany) from
a batch of photos he purchased recently and has on a big website on
line. The photograph is from
Spain. Perhaps a Chevrolet.Bumper looks French. Any ideas? --
The radiator and badge is definitely
Chevrolet but the car seems to have been customised This would seem to
be a cca
1930 Chevrolet AD Universal Coach,
manufactured only 1930. Had wire wheels but front looks pressed steel?

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1931 Standard Big Nine Mk3 Saloon
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo
featured on facebook. Photo is from the plate, 1951 to 1956. A well
loved car which I think is a 1931 Standard Big Nine - maybe? --
Yes Standard Big Nine. These were
available 1930 to 1933 as Mk1 to MK4. Well thrashed car so some
features hidden. The wheelnuts are not exposed on this car, and bumper
is gently splayed, all of which which suggests this is a cca
1931 Standard Big Nine Mk3 Saloon, August
'31+.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1937 DKW F7 Meisterklasse Cabrio
Surfing through
the internet in attempting to identify old vehicles we came across a
Wikipedia Website Page called Unidentified Automobiles where they are
asking identification. --
This is a photo is titled "Seagull bars the traffic on the Prins Hendrikkade, Amsterdam, during
the German occupation. Photo Ben van Meerendonk / AHF, IISH collection,
Amsterdam". The car is German, made in Saxony, & is a cca
1937 DKW F7 700 Meisterklasse Cabrio Limousine.
Became Auto Union, then Audi.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1937 Opel Super Six Sedan
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify photo taken in Moscow in 1948? --
Mark Dawber reminded that we had a similar car on Help
Page 121. T Car is German, a
cca 1937 Opel Super Six Sedan
made only between 1937 and 1938, so relatively unusual with the
waterfall grille. It has 2.5 litre straight-6 with a top speed of 71
mph. Available as 4-door sedan, a 2-door coupé and a 2-door cabriolet.

|

1938 Plymouth P6 Deluxe Sedan
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify photo taken in September 1944 and shows Soviet
Guards Artillery Major ? --
American car made by Chrysler Corporation and introduced in 1928 to
compete with Ford and Chevrolet in the lower price market. Emblem
mascot, waterfall grille, shape of the louvre and opening quaterlight
indicates this is a cca
1938 Plymouth P6 Four Door 6 cyl Deluxe Sedan.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1946 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Cabriolet
Another request for
identification of vehicles received from our regular contributor Joao
Ferreira (Portugal).
"Perhaps Fiat with a special Boano/Ghia body. Plate 1946/'7". -- Badge seems
Alfa Romeo. At this time model would have been the 1938-52 Alfa
Romeo 6C 2500. Pre-war cars had bodies
constructed by well known coachbuilders. We have not
been able to find a match for this body! not
been able to find a match for this body!
Post WW2, the model was Freccia d'Oro, bodies by Alfa.

c1950 ZIS 110B Saloon
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify photo of the diplomatic car (without number
plate) taken somewhere in the USSR, probably Moscow ? --
Car is Russian but based on the American Packard Super Eight, reverse
engineered in 1945 by Zavodi Imeni Stalina in Moscow, later ZIL. This

Stalin.

1957 Ford Fairlane Victoria Sedan
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify photo of the diplomatic car (without number
plate) taken somewhere in the USSR July 1957 ? --
Car is American and made in various factories and in numerous models
between 1957 and and 1959. This one seems to have four doors so is not
the retractable roof Skyliner but seems to be cca
1957 Ford Fairlane Victoria Hardtop Sedan,
6 or V8 eengine options.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1970 Avia A21 Van
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify Catafalque van in USSR photographed in 1990 ? --
'Catafalque' is a 'framework for coffin', so this must be a Hearse Van.
Literal translation of text is " In the last Way". The maker
of the van is a little obscure as this is a Renault Saviem SG2 van made
by the Czechoslovak aircraft company Avia in Prague starting in 1967 as
the Avia A15, A21 and A31.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Unknown 1930s
Landaulette
One of a number of puzzling photo
received from Eddie Britain (UK) asking if
we can please identify cars either owned by family/friends. --
This one is particularly difficult because it is a shot that does not
show the back, front nor all of the side of the car. The only obvious
features are a coach-built body, a landaulette, with wire wheels, a
spare wheel housing cover (closed off), a three-hinge rear door, and
headlamps on stalks. Perhaps could be cca 1930 Rolls Royce, Daimler,
Humber etc ???

Another very puzzling photo
sent to us by Kiprop Ng'eny (Kenya?)
who is
trying to identify a vehicle that has recently been put up for sale in
Nairobi advised as 'vintage car unique in look, good for wedding,
classy car, very unique'. -- We

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Unknown
Replicar or Kit-Car
Very puzzling and fuzzy indistinct photo
sent to us by David Wells (UK)
who is
trying to identify a vehicle that has been sitting on a friends drive
for many years awaiting restoration. Attached only photograph he has
which is rather grainy but hopefully good enough to enable
identification. -- Sorry,
this looks like one of many Replicars or
Kit Cars made in the 1970'80'90 both in the UK and USA.
Some were expensive & exotic, others firbreglass bodies on rather
mundane moderns.
