AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

Star Benz 3.5HP Velo Vis-a-vis
Earlier photo received from Ged Moss (UK)
of his G.Grandfather's 1905 Star. GG was the Managing Director of
Rotherham Forge & Rolling Mills, Ged has subsequently found other
photos of family's early cars but he has no idea of what they
were. --
Very poor contact-strip photo, which we
tried to improve. The immediate impression is that the car is a Benz
Vis-a-vis. However bit more research suggests this could be c1899
Star Benz 3.5HP Velo Vis-a-vis built
in Wolverhampton (UK) under licence.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1899 Hertel 2HP Two-Seater
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew what
this one was? Photo from Romanian
flea market ! --
Interesting steering arrangement of two bicycle front forks connected
to offset tiller mechanism; basically two bikes with a central
platform. This is a 1899
Oakman-Hertel Two-Seater with a two
cylinder 2HP engine of own design made in Greenfield Massachusetts
between 1899 and 1900. Marketed under 'Hertel' name.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1902 Knox Tuxedo Surrey
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew what
this one was? Photo from Romanian
flea market ! --
From front 'bonnet' looks a turn of century American car. Indeed so, a
vehicle built by the Knox Automobile Co, Springfield, Mass, this is an
air cooled cca
1902 Knox Tuxedo Surrey, nicknamed
'Porcupine' in view of cooling studs screwed to the cylinders. Engine
was longitudinal 16HP 2 cylinder opposed. Knox lasted to 1914.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1903 Napier 16HP Tonneau
Photo-of-photo received from our Simon Bishop (UK)
looking into history of his Singer 14/34 from Scotland. Jamie Adamson,
who still ownes the family home Careston Castle, Brechin, Angus, also
has photo of a car not recoginised. Great grandfather registered SR 4
as Dodge, later Napier. --
New reg. SR4 would have been Forfar CC December 1903. Our
veterans expert Ariejan Bos agrees this resembles a cca 1903 Napier
16HP Tonneau. Reg plate likely transferred to Dodge later.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Possibly 1903
DeDietrich Tonneau
Photo-of-photo received from our Simon Bishop (UK)
looking into history of his Singer 14/34 from Scotland. Jamie Adamson,
who still ownes the family home Careston Castle, Brechin, Angus, also
has photo of a car not recoginised. Great grandfather registered SR2 as
a Napier, later a Clement Talbot and then an Argyll.
--
New reg. SR2 would have been Forfar CC December 1903. Our
veterans expert Ariejan Bos does not think Napier but suggests perhaps
a French cca 1903/4 De
Dietrich?

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1903
De Dion Bouton Two-Seater
Earlier photo received from Ged Moss (UK)
of his G.Grandfather's 1905 Star. GG was the Managing Director of
Rotherham Forge & Rolling Mills, Ged has subsequently found other
photos of early cars but he has no idea of what they
were. --
Very blurry photo, which we
tried to improve, of a group of parked cars but no information if
family owned. Lack of size and detail in the photo but this looks very
much like the Paris made French cca
1903 De Dion Bouton Two Seater,
probably 3HP.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904
Wolseley Two Seater
Earlier photo received from Ged Moss (UK)
of his G.Grandfather's 1905 Star. GG was the Managing Director of
Rotherham Forge & Rolling Mills, Ged has subsequently found other
photos of early cars but he has no idea of what they
were. --
Very blurry photo, which we
tried to improve, of a group of parked cars but no information if
family owned. Lack of size and detail in the photo but we can tell from
the wrap-round radiator that this is a cca
1904 Wolseley Two Seater, but
not HP size.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1905
Star 7HP Two-Seater
Period photo received from Ged Moss (UK) hoping
we can confirm the identify of what he thinks is 7HP Star built from
kit by his grandfather, in Wickersley Rotherham. --
Louvres and wheelnuts confuse. Confirmed
by Neale Lawson, who has owned a near-identical car for 50 years, that
this is indeed a cca
1905 Star 7HP Two-Seater & Dickey.
Registration is Rotheram CBC mid/late 1905. Separate hand oiler. The wheel nuts are of hand stamped type, and in
May 1904 cars had eight louvre bonnets.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1908 Argyll 14'16 Tourer
Lovely period photo received from Jim
Burke (UK) of
his great uncle Joseph Burke, chauffeur to the Van Der Bilts in NY and
also, he thinks, to Winston Churchill, when MP in Dundee 1908-22. Joseph emigrated to
USA 1910 and may have returned
for the Churchill job. --
Car is Scottish made in a grand
factory in Alexandria. This is a cca 1908 Argyll 14'16 Tourer made for
three years. Argyll sold 12'14s to New York as Taxis. Financial
problems 1914 and factory sold to Navy for making torpedos.

Rover 15HP Tourer
Earlier photo received from Ged Moss (UK)
of his G.Grandfather's 1905 Star. GG was the Managing Director of
Rotherham Forge & Rolling Mills, Ged has subsequently found other
photos of family's early cars but he has no idea of what they
were. --
Very poor contact-strip photo, which we
tried to improve, taken at Hop Pole Hotel in Ollerton, near Robin Hood's
Sherwood Forrest. Longish louvered bonnet, shield shape rad with notch,
and no driver's door, suggests cca
1909 Rover 15HP Tourer.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1910 Lozier Model H Briarcliff
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew what
this was, from Romanian
flea market ! --
American photo possibly originally notated as a cca 1910 Lozier Six
Cylinder, is now from the length of the bonnet believed to be a cca
1910 Lozier Model H Briarcliff Touring,
four cylinder, with possibly John Perrin, the Chief Engineer, at the
wheel. Lozier cars were made in Detroit from 1900, tried to merge with
Ford, ended 1915.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1910 Daimler 15 Tourer
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was sent photo by a friend
for identification. Suggested 1912 Daimler 20. --
Apparently Canada.
Our photo files suggest Daimler, earlier and smaller. So
we did bit more digging and found that a car matching the appearance of
this one was in 2013 at National Motor Museum, Birdwood, Austaralia,
being a
cca 1910 Daimler 15 Tourer purchased
new by a Jack Trescowthick of Angaston (SA) at the nearby town Adelaide
Motor Show in March 1910.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1912 Woods Extension Brougham
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew what
this one was? Photo from Romanian
flea market ! --
Quite a difficult one because American electric powered cars were very
popular at the turn of the 20th century and outdid each other in trying
to look alike! Bonnet/bodywork is neigh identical. This one is
differentiated mainly by numerous wheel bolts front and few rear,
suggesting a cca
1912 Woods Extension Brougham.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1913
Arrol Johnston 15.9 Tourer
Earlier photo received from Ged Moss (UK)
of his G.Grandfather's 1905 Star. GG was the Managing Director of
Rotherham Forge & Rolling Mills, Ged has subsequently found other
photos of family's early cars but he has no idea of what they
were. --
Scottish car. Company started as Mo-Car
Syndicate in 1895, became New Arrol Johnston Car Company in 1905 with
factory in Paisley, nr Glasgow, Scotland. Photo is a bit blurry but we
are relatively sure this is a cca
1913 Arrol Johnston 15.9 Tourer.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1919
Morgan 'Sporting'
Couple of interesting photos received from
Trevor Neale (UK) of
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome of WW1 pilot who served with 37 Sqdn
Royal Flying Corps, killed in an air accident in Aden in 1920's. --
Agreement that this is a cca
1919 Morgan JAP 'Sporting' (1913-21)
but probably not the very same one unless pre/post repaint job.
Confusing/unlikely that both photos are dated 1920, unless two entirely
separate cars; - too many differences. No registration visible to
clarify.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1920
Pic-Pic R2 15'45 Landaulette
Interesting photo received from Amelia
Fernandez (Spain)
of car taken in San Sebastian, Spain, appr.1925. Enquiry is for a
Facebook page of old photos called San Sebastian Desaparecida. --
Rolls quality expensive car, initially
conceived in Switzerland by brothers Dufaux 1904, to be made by
Piccard-Pictet in Geneva, but became a licensed Hispano Suiza from
Spain, bankrupted and taken over 1920 by aero engines Gnome et Rhone of
Paris, France, this is a cca
1920 Pic-Pic R2 15'45 Landaulette.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1923
Ansaldo 4C Tourer
Cinema screen grab taken from an Italalian Film 'Una gita
scolastica' (A School Outing) made in 1983, where cars are
investigated by IMCDB. Film is about a school outing from Bologna to
Florence. --
This car was made some ten years after the story was supposed to have
happened. Story is set in 1914 pre WW1 and the car is a cca
1923 Ansaldo 4C Tourer made in Turin
by one of largest armaments makers. Broken up by Mussolini 1927 when
Ansaldo aircraft division became part of FIAT.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1923
Darracq DS Tourer
Interesting period photo received from
Merrick Rogers (UK)
of car driven by late aunt's father, who worked as a chauffeur.
Believed to by taken circa 1920, in England. Any help
much appreciated. --
Big tourer with reflection of the sun obliterating some identification features.
Can
however see enough to advise this is a British car with French origins
being a cca 1922 Darracq Tourer, probably the 15HP DS Model, made by
the STD Company which included Sunbeam, Talbot and Darracq to 1935.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Possibly
c1930 Mathis Tourer
Another puzzling photo received from from
Georges Truffaut (Belgium)
of a vehicle he is trying to identify. Does the car front in attached
picture ring a bell? Looks like an American automobile. --
Not a positive identification as the photo
is small and not very clear. We feel it is probably not American from
the overall shape of the radiator. We think the car is probably French
and possibly
cca 1930 Mathis Tourer/Coupe
Decouvrable. Two sets horisontal louvres suggests a model
TY or PY.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1938
Skoda Popular Roadster
Cinema screen grab taken from an Italalian Film 'Gino Bartali :
l'intramontabile' (Gino Bartali : The Iron Man) made in 2005, where
cars are investigated by IMCDB. Film is about the life of the road
racing cyclist Gino Bartali. --
Car was manufactured in Mlada Boleslav in Czechoslovakia. From other
views of the car it seems to have a straight line window sill, seems to
have a dickey seat cover and an external spare wheel cover, suggesting
this is cca
1938 Skoda Popular Roadster.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1939
Fiat 508 CM Coloniale
Cinema screen grab taken from an Italalian Film 'Gino Bartali :
l'intramontabile' (Gino Bartali : The Iron Man) made in 2005, where
cars are investigated by IMCDB. Film about the life of the road
racing cyclist Gino Bartali. --
Italian car manufactured in Turin based on the Nuova Ballila 1100 as a
light tactical military vehicle. Original version was a bit more
rounded so this is a cca
1939 Fiat 508 CM Coloniale, which
remained in production to 1945, 6000 made, 1089cc 30BHP, rear drive.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1947 Standard 4-door Saloon
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) found this photo on facebook
and as they had a Standard at the camping ground a few weeks
ago, he wondered what model this one was. --
Indeed a 'flying' Standard in view of the
flying Union Jack badge on radiator. Upgrade on the pre WW2 Super 12,
and as has no bonnet louvres this is a cca
1947 Standard 4-door Saloon. The 12HP
and the 14HP cars were very alike, distinguished by badge in starting
handle hole denoting HP (missing!).

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1960
Wartburg 311 Saloon
Number of interesting photos sent to us by
Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia)
who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this car taken in
spring of 1961, probably in the CSSR, and the country from the number
plate? --
Car is of East German origin made in
the Eisenach BMW factory with BMW logo, to which BMW objected, becoming
EMW, AWE, then VEB. No name on bonnet so is earlier cca
1960 Wartburg 311 Saloon. Wartburg is
the local fortress castle. Registration does seem CZ

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1967 Subaru 360 Two-door Saloon
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
seems to be on the lookout for unusual cars, and wondered if we knew what
this one was? Photo from Goodwood
Festival of Speed 2018. --
Japanese, introduced 1958 as their first car and subsequently 392,000
of this model were made. Key (city) Car nicknamed Ladybug has 356cc
transverse twin two-stroke air cooled engine. Eventually grew up to be rally winning four-wheel-drive turbocharged Impreza, this is
a cca
1967
Subaru 360 Two-door Saloon.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Unknown
1920s Tourer
Interesting period photo received from Matthew
Marshall (UK) of grandparents's
car. Photo taken in UK on a holiday post-1933, pre-WW2. --
Big low car, RHD, large solid
wheels, bonnet with tapering slope towards a flat windscreen, bakelite
filler cap, big beading round edges of centre doors suggesting older
coachwork, chunky sidelights with headlamps low near bumper. Main
suspects like Armstrong and Lanchester have six wheel studs. Any
help
would be much appreciated !
