:: [  SVVS  NATIONAL  AND   INTERNATIONAL  INFORMATION  ASSISTANCE SERVICE  ] ::

The SVVS Website currently receives approximately 500,000 hits a year and the "HELP PAGE" is internationally the most visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle  -   These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries received, and information that we have provided.  While page is being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed,  cars are in year order:

Please note that if you are submitting an enquiry, we will assume that we have your permission
that we can publish the photo, background story to it, and your name and country calling from.

IDENTIFICATION/DATING:   SVVS HELP PAGES EXCEED 2,000 Enquiries Received and Identified

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1901 De Dion Bouton G2 4.5HP
Another photo received from Ken Brown, Hampshire (UK) who says always a pleasure looking through the Help Pages. Perhaps we would enjoy the challenge of identifying a few mystery car photos from his collection. Looks forward to his items appearing on the SVVS website.  --  Our Rory Sinclair advises that from the wheel hubs, starting handle position,. dummy bonnet, dumb iron shape etc. this is a cca 1901 De Dion Bouton G2 rear-engined 4.5HP. Steering column & lever are mods.

1901 De Dion Bouton G2 4.5HP

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1902 Cottereau 7HP RE Tonneau
Another photograph received from Romania but this time from George Nica, a Fiat  aficionado (Romania) who collects car photos and hopes to edit a
vintage car photo album. This is one from his 'unidentified' file. Is it a 1902 Opel-Drracq --  I could not find a Opel Darracq with these features so consulted our Ariejan Bos who was not surprised because he is sure this is a French cca 1902 Cotterea 7HP. Closer inspection provides many features including dumbirons & four prong start bracket.

1902 Cottereau 7HP RE Tonneau

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1903 Darracq 24HP RE Tonneau
Another photo received from Ken Brown, Hampshire (UK) who says always a pleasure looking through the Help Pages. Perhaps we would enjoy the challenge of identifying a few mystery car photos from his collection. Looks forward to his items appearing on the SVVS website.  --  Interesting segmented roundish bonnet confirmed by our Rory Sinclair, who had similar car,  this is fine French Paris made cca 1903 Darracq 24HP Rear Entrance Tonneau. P 1152 is Surrey CC registration.

1903 Darracq 24HP RE Tonneau

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1904 Turner Miesse 10hp Steamer
Another photo sent to us by our regular contributor and expert Mark Dawber  (New Zealand).
Bonnet has vent in the side, perhaps a steamer and perhaps British. Long chain case; date maybe as early as 1906?? -- We thought steamer which prompted our Ariejan Bos to some sideways thinking and advised that it is probably a much updated cca 1904 Turner Miesse Tonneau 10hp Steamer with a flash boiler. Body, drivers door, bonnet, rad surround, chain cover all seem much later, poss 1911 style.

1904 Turner Miesse 10hp Steamer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1906 Brasier 16'24 Tonneau
Our regular contributor and expert Mark Dawber  (New Zealand) was searching on the internet and came across a photo on the Saffronart Blog website of a car notated: Nizam VII (Mir Osman Ali Khan Asaf Jah) posing with a car probably a 1906 Darracq 12 HP. He doubted the identification and asked for our oppinion.
--  A couple of our experts agree it is definitely not a Darracq but it is French and was built in Paris. Shaft driven,  this is a  cca 1906  Brasier  16'24  Side-entrance Tonneau.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1907 Humber 15 Delivery Van
Interesting photograph received from David Cass (UK)
of a delivery wagon belonging to Great Grandfather George Henshall in Blackley area of Manchester, who sold "PANDORA" Pickles. N1594 is a relatively early Manchester registration. He assues picture taken when new.  --  Body seems of a different period to bonnet. Unusual basis for a van, and probably started out as quality car. Front  would seem to be a cca 1907 Humber, poss 15hp, but semi-closed cab and body is probably cca WW1.

1907 Humber Delivery Van

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1908 Brasier Side Entrance Tonneau
Another photo sent to us by our regular contributor and expert Mark Dawber  (New Zealand) who had received it from Tim Martin and suggested this is a Brasier or perhaps Mors.
--  Not Morse as there is a definite ridge to the centre of the bonnet and a cross stripe; Mors generally had curves.  This is indeed a French Paris built cca 1908 Brasier Side Entrance Tonneau. As this appears to have no chainguard so is shaft drive,  probably 16'26.  It also has long dumbirons so not KD.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909 Austin 18'24 Limousine
Another photo received from Ken Brown, Hampshire (UK) who says always a pleasure looking through the Help Pages. Perhaps we would enjoy the challenge of identifying a few mystery car photos from his collection. Looks forward to his items appearing on the SVVS website.  --  This one looks photo re-touched, hiding the rad, but one of our wise sages has identified this a cca 1909 Austin 18'24 Open-drive Limousine. This one  clearly has chain drive. Austin Motor Company started in 1906.

1909 Austin 18'24 Limousine

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: c1912 Isotta Frashchini Type KM
Another photo sent to us by our regular contributor and expert Mark Dawber  (New Zealand) who had received it from Tim Martin and both were puzzled as to what it was. Unfortunate stain on the radiator badge does not help.
--  My first thought was Italian Zust, but two of our wise sages have put me right advising that the chain cover is typical of a cca 1910'13 Isotta Frashchini Type KM Sports, Tall engine short wheelbase 10.6 Litre, 140HP 130kph. Unlikely the smaller engined TM 6.2L1912-14.

c1912 Isotta Frashchini Type KM

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1912 Buchet Type A Two-seater
Another photo received from Ken Brown, Hampshire (UK) who says always a pleasure looking through the Help Pages. Perhaps we would enjoy the challenge of identifying a few mystery car photos from his collection. Looks forward to his items appearing on the SVVS website.  --  This one did not look British so we consulted our experts and our Ariejan Bos again came up with an answer; it was a French cca 1912 Buchet Two-seater.  A British version the 'Ascot' was built  in Stockport.

1912 Buchet Type A Two-seater

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1913 Vermorel 8'10 Tourer
Another photograph received from George Nica, a Fiat aficionado (Romania) who collects car photos
. This is from his 'unidentified' file. What is it, and what is CIA?  --  I knew the badge, just could not find it. Our Ariejan Bos advised it was  not too difficult; 1913 Vermorel Tourer in military service. CIA stands for Centre d'Instruction Automobile, and was a military instruction camp for drivers in Ste. Mesme in France during and probably before WW1. Vermorel was common car in period.

1913 Vermorel 8'10 Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Probably cca 1916 Puch Alpenwagen
Another photograph received from George Nica, a Fiat aficionado (Romania) who collects car photos
. This is from his 'unidentified' file. Is it a Hungarian Marta?  --  We could find no features to link it to Marta photos we had. Our Ariejan Bos suggested an Austrian Puch which were RHD and popular. The front door curves round towards the bonnet, and the bonnet has a 'draw' handle for lifting, and circular airvent, all Puch features, as are the mudguards. Probably a cca 1916 Puch Alpenwagen.

Probably cca 1916 Puch Alpenwagen

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1918 Nash 680 Touring
Photo received from Aad Streng, Eindhoven, (Holland) who is again involved in some historic research, which includes identifying locations and cars on photos. Photo is of two men in a taxi in an unknown location (presumably southern Europe) nor does he know the make of the car.  -- His enquiry 2011 was about his father's '37 Nash taxi. Well, this is one too, a very early cca 1918 Nash 680 Touring. Word TAXA on the door for Taxi seems to be Danish;  if so, the town could possibly be  Copenhagen.

1918 Nash 680 Touring

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1919+ Ford Model T Tudor Sedan
Photograph posted on the PreWarCar website by Greg Bailey (USA) taken c1925 of his grandmother, father and uncle in the oil boom town of Slick, Oklahoma. Can anybody identify the car ?
-- PreWarCar is one of the best old car sites on the internet but they are consistently very mean with the size of their photos and the ability to download them for identification. This one is even smaller than ever but it is just about possible to identify bits that it is a cca 1919+ Ford Model T Tudor Sedan.

1919+ Ford Model T Tudor Sedan

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1923 GN Sports (Watercooled)
Another photo received from Ken Brown, Hampshire (UK) who says always a pleasure looking through the Help Pages. Perhaps we would enjoy the challenge of identifying a few mystery car photos from his collection. Looks forward to his items appearing on the SVVS website.  --  Wise sages advise this is a cca 1923 GN Sports with 4-cyl engine (by D.F.P.) made after Frazer-Nash and Godfrey left the concern in October of 1922. Shaft drive; water-cooled 1100cc. These cars were not success.

1923 GN Sports

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1923 Hotchkiss AM Saloon
Cinema screen grab taken from a German comedy film " Der eiserne Gustav"  (The Iron Gustav) made in 1958 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. True story of coach & horses trip from Berlin to Paris to prove horse is as good as a motorised taxi.  -- Upmarket car made in France in Paris by company then better known for manufacture of armaments. Had branch in Coventry in Britain which designed the car on the photo.  This is a cca 1923  Hotckiss  AM Saloon. Trucks until 1971.

1923 Hotchkiss AM Saloon

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1924 Amilcar C4 Two-Seat Tourer
Cinema screen grab taken from a Russian Documentary Film " Chelovek s kino-apparatom"  (Man with a Movie Camera) made in 1926 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Man travels around Russian cities with a camera documenting urban life in 1929 Moscow, Odessa, Kharkiv and Kiev. -- Sporting French Car designed by Salomon and Moyer who also designed the Citroen 5CV. Made in Paris this is a cca 1924 Amilcar C4 Two-Seat Tourer.  The C4 range was aimed at longer  larger  comfort.

1924 Amilcar C4 Two-Seat Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1924 Steyr IV Tourer
Another interesting photo sent to us by Andrew Kostin from Moscow (Russia) who is a collector of old photos. Can we identify this photo taken somewhere in Austria and bears stamp of the photo atelier from Vienna. Unfortunately, no date is mentioned on obverse?  -- Quite difficult as has transverse spring and flat radiator but we are relatively sure it is an Austrian cca 1924 Steyr IV 1.8 Tourer designed by Hans Ledwinka, (later Tatra fame),  being only model with transverse spring.

Probably 1924 Steyr IV Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1926 Crossley 15'30 Tourer
Cinema screen grab taken from a Russian Documentary Film " Chelovek s kino-apparatom"  (Man with a Movie Camera) made in 1926 where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Man travels around Russian cities with a camera documenting urban life in 1929 Moscow, Odessa, Kharkiv and Kiev. -- Relatively unusual car in Britain let alone depths of Russia. British car from Manchester popular during WW1 as suppliers to British Forces.  This is a cca 1926 Crossley 15'30 Tourer (12'14 on  UK market).

1926 Crossley 15'30 Tourer

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1926 Ford Model TT Truck
Cinema screen grab taken from a British historical period drama "Suffragette"  made in 2015  where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. The film is about women's suffrage in the United Kingdom at the time of Emmeline Pankhurst and was the first to be shot in the British Houses of Parliament (by Big Ben).  -- Has bar between headlamps so is  cca 1926 Ford Model TT Truck. Based on the car but with a heavier frame. First produced in USA 1917,  chassis only, buyer supplying body.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1929 Packard 626 Sedan
Another fascinating photograph from our regular contributor Cicos Florin in Constanta by the Black Sea (Romania) who is interested in old cars of Romania.  Do we know what this is?   --  The plane is a French designed Potez 25 two-seat observation spotter, probably built under licence by Industria Aeronautica Romana in Brasov, powered by a 520 hp Salmson or Lorraine engine. The car is bit obscured but has dished headlamps and sidelights so is probably a  cca 1929 Packard 626 Sedan.

1929 Packard 626 Sedan & Potez 25 Biplane

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1929 NAG Protos 201 Landaulette
Unusual photograph received from
Steve Metz of Phoenix Arizona (USA) showing from L to R, two of his uncles, his grandfather, his great-grandmother and their driver. On the back is written 'Vienna 1931'. Sorry about the quality, it is a scan of a scan.  --  Car is German, Berlin, with a quite unusual open drive landaulette body, made by Nationale Automobil-Gesellschaft (NAG), then part of AEG. NAG bought Protos from Siemens and this is a cca 1929 NAG Protos Open Drive Lndaulette.

1929 NAG Protos 201 Open Drive Landaulette

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK) was involved in trying to unsuccessfully identify a film 'still' from a Danish 1955 movie "Det var på rundetårn".  In the process came across this car in the same moovie and wondered what it was? --  This is a rather nice cca 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible. This was Chevrolet's best trim offering at that time and the convertible was offered in Bel Air trim only. Bel Air is affluent neighborhood of  Los Angeles,  which lies across LA's Sunset Boulevard.

1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: 1959 Borgward Isabella Kombi
Interesting photograph received from Drew Slack (UK) asking if we can identify the car in front of the queue leaving the Ballachulish Ferry? Photo in public domain. Regards and thanks in advance.
--  Ballachulish is in Scotland near Fort William and is at the mouth of Loch Leven where the Ferry provided a short cut  to the other side. Ferry closed in 1975 when a bridge was opened. The registration is London CC 1962 and car was made  in  Bremen,  Germany,  a cca 1959 Borgward Isabella Kombi.

1959 Borgward Isabella Kombi

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:Unknown c1900 Two-Seater
Another photo received from Ken Brown, Hampshire (UK) who says always a pleasure looking through the Help Pages. Perhaps we would enjoy the challenge of identifying a few mystery car photos from his collection. Looks forward to his items appearing on the SVVS website.  --  This one seems to have stumped all our experts in the UK and abroad. Obviously a very early car when there were many experimental makes. Suggestions were Gillet-Forest, perhaps Fafnir or Nagant.  Help please!
