Stephens 8HP Dogcart
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs of
very interesting old machinery which has not been identified there. --
Large sign saying 'Stephens' so either a maker or Hotel? Georgano
advises British cyclemaker 1898-1900 in Clevedon, nr Bristol, made a
few similar vehicles as
cca 1898 Stephens 8HP Dogcart with two
cylinder engine. Used as local taxi ! Prototype still exists and
similar car was on the Brighton Run 2019. Also 9-seaters ?

Enquiry from William Page (UK)
relating to picture in SVVS late Bryan Goodman's book
showing a Cleveland Electric at Stormont Castle. --

Allen family, wife who was a painter, driving. Car was a cca 1900

Buffum 20HP Roi Des Belges
Fascinating feedback from out veterans
expert Ariejan Bos (Holland)
relating to a photo which has remained unsolved for some time. He
believed it could be British. --
However while researching a separate SAHB photo he reverted to his
Buffum files and found the same photo. Same
driver is at the wheel of an almost identical 1902 vehicle, which is a
Buffum beyond any doubt. Standard Catalog advises American car,
Abington 1901/7. This one is the
cca 1903 Buffun 20HP Roi Des Belges.

Stanley Steamer Model C
Photo from Karen McClure of a Stanley
Steamer with
her
grandfather Ellis Robertson taken in 1955, brought a comment from Michael
Nadeau Peterborough, NH (USA) that
he knew it as owned by George Robertson of Keene. Father
worked
for Robertson Motors in 1960'70s when it was like-new in
showroom. Dealership was then owned by Tim Robertson. Before closure it
closed in 1976, Robertson Motors was one of the oldest continuously
operating auto dealerships in the US, started about 1902.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904
Argyll10'12 Tonneu
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify vehicle
posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification. Is that diamond logo on
radiator? -- First
thought Argyll but couple of oddities: the 'diamond' is the head of a
fan fulley boss (often a Clement feature), and rad has angled sides at
top. Our Ariejan Bos confirms it is a cca
1904 Argyll 10'12 Tonneu and has photo
of same or similar car of New Zealand Governor General Lord
Plunkett, with Argyll car named.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1904
Tarrant 10HP Roadster
Fascinating sidetrack to the above was
that an Argyll-like car was the first production car manufactured in
Australia. Colonel Harley Tarrant built his first car in 1901 and won
Australia's first Motor Race in it in 1904 at Sandown. Photo advises he
in an Argyll and Rand in Decauville. Our experts say this is doubly
wrong and is a Tarrant
and a Mercedes. Harley Tarrant made
about 16 cars and was also the agent for Argyll, F.I.A.T, Sunbeam, FN
and DeDion. Then became Victoria agent for Ford.

Fiat 16HP Tonneau
Lovely period photo received from Michael
Horton (UK)
who is trying to identify the vehicle believed to have been taken
outside a house known as Oakfield in Esher Surrey circa 1900. Any help
identifying the car and registration date much appreciated. --
Registration LN2766 was London CC 1906. Difficult radiator shape to
identify as number companies used them in period. Our Ariejan Bos
thinks only make having combination of
suitable features and chain drive was the
cca 1904 Fiat 16HP Tonneau.

Humber Humberette 5HP
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified.
-- Humberette was
a British cyclecar made by Humber in Coventry and in Beeston in a number of
variants over
early years. This one has the radiator in front of the slightly
bigger bonnet, so is cca
1903-5 Humberette 5HP fitted with a De
Dion-Bouton 613cc single cylinder water-cooled engine. Has the
later fitted doors.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1905
Wolseley 8HP Voiturette
Surfing through the internet in
attempting to identify old vehicles we often come across photographs of
very interesting old machinery which has not yet been identified.
-- Interesting
to note on the photo that the rear tyre is shredded to the rim and that
the others have a metal stud reinforcing layer over the tread. Cars in
background late 1920s so likely a posed photo of 'granny'. The two dash
tanks are built-in. This is a cca
1905 Wolseley 8HP Voiturette designed
by Herbert Austin, left 1905.

DATING:1906
Porthos 24/30 Tourer
Very unusual photo posted by Michael Schlenger (Germany)
on
Facebook of a German reader's grandfather photographed in
Pressburg 1903. --
Unlikely 1903. Ariejan Boz agrees a French Billancourt made cca
1906 Porthos 24/30 Tourer. Distinctive
flat top to round radiator. Porthos started in 1905 making big
expensive cars, including Grand Prix cars, exported to UK, and
seems London 1906 registration. Grew fast but liquidated 1909 due
scandal of nonsupply of 600 taxis to London. |

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1906
Vulcan 10HP Two-Seater
Slightly grainy photo from a difficult
angle received from Simon Pocock (UK)
looking to identify the car in this old family photo, He is guessing it
is some sort of vintage Talbot. --
Regret not a Talbot as these would have had a hump pn top of the radiator.
Advised by our Ariejan Bos that this is an unsual British quality car
made in Southport, nr Liverpool, by a company making cars since 1902
and made commercials until 1953. This looks like the cca
1906 Vulcan 10HP Two Seater (as
on HP7)

Thornycroft 30cwt Flatbed
Our regular
contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
is trying to identify vehicle posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification. Also questioning registration and
location. -- This
would seem to be a British just pre-WW1 Thornycroft lorry made in
Basingstoke Hants UK. The registration is New Zealand but seems a car
plate rather than a lorry plate. Thornycroft were initially makers of
steam lorries. Chain drive and shorter bonnet suggest a cca
1909 Thornycroft 30 cwt Lorry.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1909
Talbot 25 Roi des Belges
Our regular
contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
is trying to identify vehicle posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification. --
Lord Islington was Governor General of New Zeeland 1910-12. Photo is of
visit in November 1911 to Greymouth NZ, across South Island to
Christchurch. Apparently thousands lined the streets. The car is from
the UK Clement Talbot London and from the size of bonnet is likely to
have been the cca 1909 Talbot 25 Roi des
Belges, or the bigger
35HP.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1911
Delage AI Torpedo
Our regular
contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
is trying to identify vehicle posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification. --
French car made by company started in 1906 in Levallois-Perret near
Paris. Luxury sporting / racing cars followed with many wins. This is
a cca
1911 Delage AI Torpedo Two-Seater
made in Courbevoie where 350 workers and 1000 cars annually. Grew substantially
including aero but depression resulted in being taken over by
Delahaye, name dying 1954.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1919
Humber 10HP Two-Seater
Our regular
contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
is trying to identify hand coloured
photo on a
Facebook Page.
Suggestion it is a Humberette and photo taken 1916. --
Could be wrong on two counts. Humberette was cyclecar made by Humber in number of variants over
early years and was a very small car, (see above on page). Rounded rad, long skirt and rounded mudguard, so this would be a post WW1
cca
1919 Humber 10HP Two-Seater, so photographed
after 1916? (NOW SEE below).
|
|
ADDENDUM TO DATING:1915
Humber 10HP Two-Seater
Subsequent to the above, further
confirmation that photo is 1916. --Further
researches determined that Humber 10 was introduced 1914, War
was declared in July. Our Tony Oakes and 'The Humber Story' advise
that 245 were made in 1915 and 61 in 1916, Only pictures of
'rounded' rad Humbers were strangely all from the Antipodes; three
photos of vehicles, some with local coachwork. So just possible
this is relatively unique exported car, and just possible photographed
in 1916.

Enquiry from the 'Honest John Classics'
Website (UK) sent
in by reader researching a family car. --
Unusual car similar to one on HP98.
Made and registered in Middlesex UK, a
later version of popular GN sporting cyclecar made by Godfrey and
Frazer-Nash, this is a cca
1922 Frazer-Nash Special Sports GN Two-Seater.
Short-lived GN model bodied by Frazer Nash after both left GN due
management changes. Powered by 1100cc four cylinder water cooled
engine, shaft drive and solid axle.

AJS 349cc Single
Our regular
contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
is trying to identify vehicle posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification. --
Just a trace of the AJS logo on the petrol tank so a machine made in
England by A. J. Stevens & Co. Ltd in Wolverhampton. Our Motorcycle
guru Chas Moody advises it is a ecca
1926 AJS 349cc side valve single,
possibly Standard Sporting Model G5. Clearly seen better days; primary
chain guard removed and some acetylene lighting equipment is
added.

Our regular

is trying to identify vehicle posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification, photographed Stutgartt --
This is a known photo which we have had
before on Help
Page 83. This
photo is titled 'Corbusier 1927 Daimler'. "Le Corbusier "
designed this 'Weissenhof Haus ' which was completed in Stuttgart
Germany in 1927. The car is not a Daimler but the Porsche designed cca

Rosengart LR4n Saloon
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
received this photo from s friend and both wondered what it was? --

Ariel 497cc Model G
Our regular
contributor Mark Dawber (New Zealand)
is trying to identify vehicle posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification. --
Make is relatively obvious but the location is not. Our Motorcycle guru
Chas Moody advises British bike is cca
1930 Ariel OHV 497cc Model G. Proud
looking owner as this was the top-of-the-range sports model which had a
single cylinder engine but with twin exhausts. Gearbox was three speed
with hand-change. Reputed top speed of about 80 mph.

Styl'son 996 Combination
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) is trying to identify vehicle
posted on a
Facebook Page which
was asking for identification.
--
Lovely JAP V twin in the style of the
Brough but our motorcycle guru Chas Moody persevered and eventually
determined it is a cca 1930 Styl'son 996 V Twin with English sounding
name but made in France at St Etienne (near Lyon) from largely
propriatory items. Sucesses in competion resulted in rapid growth and
overtrading, liquidated in 1931.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:1936
Vauxhall 14'6 Saloon
Period Photo received from Philip
Clarke (UK)
from mid to late 1930s, advised as a Vauxhall 12-4 which Wikipedia says
made from 1939. However, advice from elsewhere that the number plate
suggests registration is Ayr in 1936. --
Registration is indeed Ayr in Scotland and
the date would indeed be late 1936. The car is indeed a Vauxhall. We
however feel from the ribbed bumper and shape of louvres, curved
radiator, not the 12'4 but is cca
1936 Vauxhall 14'6 DX Saloon, 1936-8.

first thought 1958 Surrey '03 investigated in 2003, a replica kit car

Colonial Cocotaxi
Cinema screen grab taken from an Italian TV
series where cars are being investigated by IMCDB. Two similar
vehicles were featured and this is the older one.
--
Very interesting and unusual vehicle which took some finding, and
eventually found in Havana, Cuba. This is a cca
1999 Colonial Cocotaxi made and used
exclusively in Cuba mainly for transporting tourists in main towns. The
machine is effectively a three-wheeled 75cc and pedal power
scooter, with rounded 'coconut' shape!
