:: [ SVVS NATIONAL
AND INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION ASSISTANCE
SERVICE ] ::
The SVVS Website currently
receives approximately 500,000
hits a year and the "HELP
PAGE" is internationally the most
visited 'page' on the site. We receive numerous e-mails from historians
and motoring enthusiasts from all over the world with the request to
identify vehicles from old photographs. We can help with identification
of Classic cars because most of us are old enough to remember them as
new, and owning Vintage or Veteran vehicles, many of us, and/or our
associates, are also specialists in own make or type of vehicle -
These Help Pages are therefore devoted to some of the interesting enquiries
received, and information that we have provided. While page is
being built, enquiries are in received order, - when completed, cars are in year
order:

SVVS HELP PAGES have some 3,000 Enquiries
Received & Identified |
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1907 Wasp Limousine
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo
featured on facebook. Photo is labeled Daimler but that is the car off
to right. -- Our
Ariejan Bos has identified photo some months back and was featured in
the Veteran Car Club of NZ magazine. This is a British Made cca
1907 Wasp Limousine, powered by a Mutel
engine. Two models were listed 1907/8, both sixes, at 3L and
8.1L. Connection to 'Courier' by Euston Motor Co with
French Gnome engine.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1907 Brown Double Phaeton
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo
featured on facebook and taken in Wellington outside the
Legislative Council building. -- Our
Ariejan Bos has not only identified the car as a cca
1907 Brown Double Phaeton but advised
that he has determined that Royal Star
of Belgium actually made the cars for factors Brown Brothers, who also
had cars made by Star, and Stanley White. Brown Bros also sold
cycles/motorcycles and many accessories.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1908 Humber 10'12 Two-Seater
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo of supposedly
the first car in Hastings (NZ). Bit odd as it is too late. I think this
is a Humber - circa 1910. --
We have had a very similar car on our
Help
Page 45. Smaller wheelhub and
half door, so after 1906. Mudguards simply bent, so not after 1908/9
latest. Multiple louvers, so 1907/9. Yes, confirmed by John Tarring of
Brooklands as a cca
1908 Humber 10'12 Two-Seater
made in Coventry, - as he has one !

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1910 Wolseley Siddeley 16'20 Tourer
One of a number of puzzling photo
received from Eddie Britain (UK) asking if
we can please identify cars either owned by the family or
belonging to friends of the family. --
This one seems to have registration OI 775 which would be from Belfast
in Northern Ireland. Reg dating data not available. Car seems to have a
painted radiator surround and has basic angular front door, a fashion
which would make it a cca
1910 Wolseley Siddeley, either a 12'16
or maybe a 16'20 Tourer.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1910 Reanult BX 14'20 Tourer
Cinema screen grab taken from a 1970
American musical film "Darling Lili" being investigated by
IMCDB.
Film about WW1 British singer who is also a German Spy (Julie Andrews)
and air ace German uncle (Jeremy Kemp). --
Film was shot in Brussels for Paris and in
Ireland at Weston Aerodrome. Released twice due directorial
disagreements; 'directors cut' 1991. Photos are all very dark
and very pixly but we are relatively sure this car is a Paris France made
cca
1910 Reanult BX 14'20 Tourer.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1918 WAF 5 Ton Lorry
One of number of interesting photos sent to us by Andrew Kostin from
Moscow (Russia) who is collector of old
photos. Can we identify vehicle photo of a truck used by Austrian
military personnel in 1919. -- Quite
badly scratched and damaged photo which we have repaired. Unusual oval
radiator, and unusual shape of wheel hub. Both make us think of Wiener
Automobil Fabrik, WAF, who made cars and lorries in Vienna,
Austria. This is probably the big brother, a cca
1918 WAF 5 Ton Lorry.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1922 Belsize Bradshaw 9HP 2-3 Seater
Lovely
period photo sent to us by Andy Dyks (UK) trying
to identify car driven by grandfather Alf Marshall and wife Dora
of Wellingborough. He is writing autobiography about Uncle John (son of
Alf and Dora) and would like to use photo. --
Quick, response by our Tim Harding: This is a Belsize-Bradshaw
9 hp of 1922 or 1923, like mine! Made
by Belsize of Manchester, introduced 1921-24 as separate model with 9HP
1370cc V-twin Dorman engine that was partly air-cooled and
partly oil-cooled.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1922 Singer 10HP Two-seat Tourer
Very poor period photo (repaired) sent to us by
Dean McCarthy, Dublin, (Ireland).
"This is my Grandfather's first car, I have no idea what make it
is, can anyone help me out ? Is it an AC 12HP? --
No not an Auto Carriers (bacame AC 1922) .
Many cars of the period looked very
similar but the ID feature here is the two small circular bonnet
catches, and moldings and height of the side. A number of our experts
suggested it was in fact a
cca
1922 Singer 10HP Two-Seater with a
rear Dickey Seat.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Tilling Stevens Coaches 1922-28
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID these 3 buses in West/North
Yorkshire? --
A spread of years but we are relatively sure all busses were made by Tilling
Stevens of Maidstone in Kent. Registration on the oldest on the left appears
to be WY which was West Riding of Yorkshire cca 1922 and the newest one
on the right is WW
7113 which is cca 1928. No
reg visible on the middle one but cca 1927.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1924 Wolseley 10 Two Seater
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID this vehicle parked up in
Dunster?Plate RW 814....I think [Coventry]? -- The
original picture is bit pixly and damaged but our Tony Oakers thinks it
is a cca
1924 Wolseley 10 Two Seater with Dickey.
Closer study of the original indicates couple of louvres on bonnet,
vent flap, five stud wheels, horn through screen support and single
piece windscreen, all confirming car.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1927 BSA V-Twin 770cc Combination
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify this Motorcycle. Is it a Brough..any
ideas?" -- Not
an easy one as most of the big motorcycle is hidden by the large
sidecar, Two of our experts doubt Rudge and one suggests from tank side
panels it is probably a cca
1927 BSA V-Twin 770cc Motorcycle-Combination,
with a beastie of a sidecar with a dickie seat at back (similar to
one in which he remembers being as a child).
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1927 Karrier KL Bus
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID this this Huddersfield bus? --
Only half photo. Not quite sure what photographer was looking at. Not
much to go on but our new helper on northern commercials John Stringer
came back with chapter and verse: Huddersfield
Corporation fleet number 56, registered CX 9848, Huddesfield made 1927
Karrier KL with Northern Counties
30-seat front entrance bodywork, new 1933/4.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1928 Albion Viking Model 26
Another very puzzling
period photo which was a glass negative sent by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please identify tourist bus in St Georges Square,
Huddersfield; Reg RR 8929...Northamptonshire?"
-
'Unidentified' on Help
Page 123 but John Stringer advised this
is a cca
1928 Albion Viking Model 26. Some
Albion Model 24 and 26s when built for coach use had this more ornate
chromed radiator shell. This
"Come & see Scarborough" show
bus was built on drop-framed coach chassis.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1929 Tilling Stevens B10A Bus
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID this East Yorkshire bus,
destination Beverley & Hull. Plate KH 7975. --
This one seems to have registration KH but it is a bit blurred. If KH
7975 then it was issued by Kingston
upon Hull CBC in 1929. The vehicle is therefore a
cca 1929 Tilling
Stevens B10A Bus made by Tilling
Stevens of Maidstone in Kent who specialised in petrol-electric
vehicle, IC engine driving generator.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1929 Leyland Titan TD1
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID this double decker, Reg WX 2105 -- John Stringer
came back with chapter and verse: cca
1929 Leyland Titan TD1 with Leyland
51-seat lowbridge bodywork, new to the West Yorkshire Road Car Co. of
Harrogate as fleet number 422. Withdrawn from service 1937, passed to

Co. of Kilmarnock Scotland.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1929 Bristol B type B32F United Autos
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID this bus coming out of Staithes
please? Reg is VF 5171. --
We needed help from the Old Bus Photos website which placed our enquiry
on their Comments page. Number of people kindly responded advising this
was a cca
1929 Bristol B Type, chassis B489,
and B32F body by United Automobile Services of Lowestoft, body number
1710. Was from Bristol's biggest order of 130.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1930 Tilling-Stevens B10A2
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID two buses but probably same; WX
5901 -- John Stringer
came back with chapter and verse: Both WX 5901, a cca
1930 Tilling-Stevens B10A2 with United
30-seater bodywork, new to West Yorkshire Road Car Co. of Harrogate,
fleet number 703. Withdrawn at the outbreak of the war in September
1939 it was stored until 1946 when it was sold for further use to 1951.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1930s Tilling Stevens Coaches
Another interesting
period photo from a glass negative sent to us by Alun Pugh of Leeds (UK)
" Can you please help ID this convoy of buses in
Kettlewell, Wharfedale, in the Yorkshire Dales. --
Difficult to tell from the back as bodies would have been coachbuilt by
others, but we are relatively sure all busses were Tilling Stevens.
Bodies look as if they may have been
made by Short Brothers. Rear bus registration WX 2139. Probably
the same outing of coaches as shown on Help
Page 125.

|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
1933 Ford Model B Fordor Saloon
Our Publicity Officer Tony Russell (UK)
found this grainy photo on a vintage hot rod website. Appears to be
a large saloon towing a very early British dragster on a trailer. Photo
probably taken in the UK early 60's. Any ideas on what the tow car is? -- Bit
of head scratching but our Mark Dawber recons a cca
1933 Ford Model B Fordor Saloon. Can't
say whether a Four or V8. Some models differ on conventional/suicide
door arrangement and a straight headlamp bar, perhaps British
made differ.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Probably c1937 BMW 326 Saloon
One of a number of puzzling photo
received from Eddie Britain (UK) asking if
we can please identify cars either owned by the family or
belonging to friends of the family. --
This photo is tiny and unclear and the car does not seem to have a
visible registration. The lady by the front door of the house has a
flamboyant dress which seems like a costume worn in Germany. The car,
back view, also seems to be a German, introduced in 1936, and is
probably cca
1937 BMW 326 Saloon.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
c1947 Humber Snipe Saloon
Part of a photo of the front of a car
being used on an unnamed ceremonial occasion sent to us by Alister
Brown (Australia)
asking if we are able to identify the year and make of the
vehicle in the attached photo ? --
We do not have acess to Australian Registrations so cannot accurately
data car. We can however say from the wheel trims, and louvre panel
without visible writing at front, this is a British
cca 1947 Humber Snipe. Difficult to
tell, no body visible, if a Saloon or a Pullman.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING:
Diamond T Truck & Vought F4U Corsair
Our regular contributor Mark Dawber (New
Zealand) was intrigued by this photo which
features a truck, and an airplane with folding wings, apparently for
sale by the side of the road. -- The
great old days!! The plane is an American Vought F4U Corsair,
originally built by Chance Vought, later by Goodyear and Brewster, 1942
to 1953. Designed to be carrier based, was used by NZ Air Force and
many others including US and UK. The truck is also American being cca
1936 Diamond T Model 80.
|
|
IDENTIFICATION AND DATING: Unknown
1958 Motorcycle Powered Car
One of a number of puzzling photo
received from Eddie Britain (UK) asking if
we can please identify cars either owned by family or friends.
--
This one has registration 321 O1 which is a reversed sequence Belfast
registration of cca 1958. Car appears
to be a motorcycle engined special perhaps used for racing. Our Chas
Moody believes the engine
is a Manx Norton from vertical finning
above the exhaust port. Probably 500cc. Hand beaten body, road leagal,
front engined, four wheel two-seater.

1920s Scooter Frame
Another very puzzling photo sent to us by
Ravindra Naruka (India)
"In the past I got help from you in identification of my
Norton flat tank and Hobart. This time I found two frames with some
engine parts there and major parts are missing. --
Photos are very difficult with such meager
details to go on. There were a great number of scooter type machines
brought out in the 1920 period. Could be something produced by a tiny
firm, and not necessarily in the U.K. Any
ID help would be appreciated.

1920s Motorcycle Frame
Another very puzzling photo sent to us by
Ravindra Naruka (India)
"In the past I got help from you in identification of my
Norton flat tank and Hobart. This time I found two frames with some
engine parts there and major parts are missing. --
Photos are very difficult with such meager
details to see. There was a great number of motorcycle manufacturers in
the 1920 period. Our experts did not recognise frame and suggest
could be 'continental' product. Please
now see HP 160 for identification.
